Our proposed new landscape takes the form of a seriesof longitudinal strips that reference the character of theriver valley, its horticultural past and the influence of human order imposed upon the ground (canals, railways, agriculture and industry). We aim to recreate a ʻdry riverʼ landscape for play andadventure, in a setting of native trees, meadows and food-producing species. The Hub Building is a gateway intothe Queen Elizabeth Park at the crossing of the existingeast-west and north-south routes. Set within an undulating, linear landscape of flowing contours and shifting groundplanes, lines of ʻfoundʼ structure (arcades) define theframework for both the building and the play elements.

Located at the cross-routes through the Queen ElizabethPark, the Hub building is the focal point of a parklandjourney. A generous forecourt opens to the south, presidedover by a light beacon. Occupying the spaces betweenthe structural arcades, the building is a proposal of beautyand quality: timeless yet aesthetically resonant. We aim tomake this a place the community will love.

The building will use off-site fabrication (steel frame & theprecast concrete cladding elements) to minimise site waste, improve finishes and save time during the contract. Thescheme reduces the use of energy and water, and makesuse of microclimate and solar orientation to capitalise onthe free benefits of the ambient environment, improvingefficiency and reducing operating costs.

Site set up
- workers welfare facilities, site office, wcs, safety hoardings etc.Temporary site cabins positioned on hardstanding to south of building to allowconstruction of playground to north.
Foundations and slab
- piling, excavationand casting of ground beams. distributionof top soil across site to form landscapemounds. Slab either cast in situ or pre-fabbeam and block construction.
- hardy plants, bulbs andgrasses planted/sown to allow growthprior to completion and blooms in spring
Off site manufacture
- Detailed infoprepared and issued for prefabricationof steel frame, pre-cast concrete panels, cladding, windows, doors and stairs to bedelivered to site.
- Ground conditions and surveyinfo reviewed to determine foundationsrequired. Small driven or screw type pileswill be used if necessary to avoid the needto remove contaminated soil beneath theexisting membrane from site.
- Trees grown off site inpreparation for planting on site

Structure -
Steel frame superstructuredelivered and installed with steel framesuperstructure. All bolted connectionsto ensure fast track construction with nosite welding. Lateral stability is providedby steel portal frames in the east-westdirection and by steel braced frames in thenorth-south direction.
- formed using metal decking witha concrete topping, which enables quickconstruction on site and also provides in-plane shear stiffness as part of the stabilitysystem. Roof provides weather proocanopy for works to commence internally(M+E first fix and framing out)
Cladding + windows
- Pre cast panels fixedback to concrete frame, windows andexternal doors installed
Internal fitout
- mechanical and electricalfit out flexible layout to enable futureadaptation
