Preach My Gospel, Lesson 4, part 4 Keep the Sabbath Day Holy

Keep the Sabbath Day Holy

Preparation: Prepare pictures for hot dog object lesson (unless you want to use the real stuff! if so, get
that all ready to go). Get an object that uses rechargeable batteries that your family is familiar with (Im going to use our camera). Prepare a sheet of paper for creating your familys list of ideas to call the Sabbath a delight.

Opening Song: Keep the Commandments Start with object lesson. Put up picture of hot dog and say, Boy, am I hungry. I think Ill have a hot dog with all the fixings! Lets see, what should I put on it? Hey, how about some banana slices? (add pictures of toppings to hot dog as you mention them) Yeah, thatll be great. Ooh, and maybe some cool whip. And to top it off, Ill drizzle a bunch of yummy chocolate syrup. Mmm-boy! Anyone want a bite? When no one wants a bite, ask if its because they dont like chocolate syrup, etc. It will be brought to your attention that all those things are yummy, just NOT on a hot dog. Explain that this is like lots of activities that we do during the week. They are great to do on Monday or Tuesday or Saturday, but a lot of things arent right for Sunday. ~Why is Sunday different from all the other days of the week? Because its the Sabbath day. Read Exodus 20:8. The Lord taught Moses and the Israelites to keep the Sabbath day holy. Did people before that keep the Sabbath day? Whats the earliest example you can think of? Read Exodus 20:11. When God created the earth, He rested on the seventh day. The things we do on Sunday show Heavenly Father how much we love Him and want to be like Him. ~What things are good to do on Sundays? So what IS good on a hot dog? What things are good on Sundays? Lets read D&C 59:9-10, and listen for 3 things that the Lord asks us to do on the Sabbath. (1 go to church, 2 partake of the Sacrament, 3 rest from our labors) (Show the camera). What would happen if I left my camera on for a very long time? (The batteries would wear out). What would I need to do to make it work again? (Recharge the batteries). Our spiritual strength is kind of like the batteries. We need recharging regularly, or our testimonies start to fade and we begin to lose our strength. Sundays help provide that recharging and refreshment that

our spirits need, if we keep the commandment to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. So are there only those three things that we can do on Sunday? No, theyre just the most important. Isaiah 58:13-14. I love how Isaiah says that we can call the Sabbath a delight. What other things can we do? Lets make a list. . . . (Let everyone contribute ideas for the list, and tell them where youll put it so they can find it when they want to choose something to do on Sunday). Testimony. Bear witness that when we set apart Sunday as a special day, and do things that bring us closer to Heavenly Father on that day, we will be blessed. Our lives will have joy and peace, and our testimonies will stay strong.
