rick or treat – October snow brings power outages
What the heck was that?!!? – an early white Halloween brings down power lines
By Roger BianchiniWarren County Report
(Writer’s note: this may seem like alietime ago but to me 4 to 8 incheso snow in October is still deserving o a hard copy news nod. A longer version o this story rst appeared on the WCR website on Oct. 30.)
Alright, I’ll admit it – someriends and mysel gathered at TeMelting Pot or pizza and Game 7o the World Series (what a story were those Cards and Game 6 inparticular) were making un o theweather station predicting rom 3-5 to 6-10 inches and then back to4-6 inches o snow or Saturday,Oct. 9th. Ater all, the low tem-perature orecast or the next day was somewhere between 35 and 38degrees; recent daily high tempera-tures have been rom 50 to 60, evenclipping 70 a time or two.No rozen ground; above reez-ing temperatures – no problem, right?WRONG.Tere it was sticking to car wind-shields and tree limbs around 6:30AM the next day … but nothing onthe streets – SEE, told you so!Rolled over and went back tosleep.Uh oh, when I nally rolled outo bed around 10:30 AM the streetswere covered, tree limbs were sag-ging and coming down under theweight o the heavy, wet snow ac-cumulating, not only on branches, but also leaves just beginning toreach their all color peak in town.Uhhh, maybe we should get tothe store – the cupboard lookspretty bare.Got to Martin’s beore noon –darn, looks a little dark in there.Power is out, running on genera-tors or emergency lights. Suddenly an announcement the store wouldno longer be selling perishables andrerigerated items as store person-nel began wrapping some displays, veggies, cheese, that kind o thingin plastic. Patrons were asked notto open rerigerator doors as storemanagement tried to preserve whatcooling was contained inside. We were headed to Food Lionwhen another customer said, no,the town’s other major grocery store had also closed up produceand perishable sections and nally the store itsel due to the poweroutage.
