Voltage, Current,

Resistance
Voltage
Voltage is an electrical Force or
Pressure that causes electrons to flow
through an electrical conductor.
Voltage can also be considered a
measurement of the difference in
“potential” that exits between two
points in a circuit.
Voltage can exist even when no current
is flowing in a circuit.

Current

Current can flow only in

substances that contain many free
electrons.
Current is the name given to
electrical flow moving through a
conductor.
An ammeter is used to measure
current flow in amperes
To do this, the ammeter is inserted
in the path of the current flow.
Current
One amp is equal to 6.28 billion,
billion electrons flowing past a
reference point in one second.
Resistance
All electrical components and circuits
have resistance, the name given to any
force that opposes current flow and
slow it.
Resistance Changes electrical energy
into some other form of energy, such as
heat or light or motion.
Direct measurement of the resistance of
a device when no current is flowing is
accomplished using an ohmmeter
Resistance
An indirect measurement of
resistance is accomplished with a
voltmeter, which can measure the
voltage drop in an operating circuit
to provide a display of the voltage
affected by resistance in a given
part of the circuit.

Voltage Summary
Voltage is an
electrical fore or
pressure that
causes electrons
to flow through
an electrical
conductor.
Measured in
units of volts (V).
Symbol for
measurement is
(E).
Current Summary
Current is the
flow of electrons
through a
conductor.
Measured in units
of amperes, or
amps (A).
Symbol for
measurement is
(I).
Resistance Summary

Resistance is the
opposition offered
to the flow of an
electrical current
by a substance
through which it is
passing.
Measured in units
of ohoms.
Symbol for
measurement is
(R)
Electrical units of
Measurement

Voltage, current, and resistance

cannot be seen, but can be
measured.
Since some of the numerical
values can br very large or very
small, it is easier to use electrical
shorthand.
It’s quicker to jot down 8M instead
of 8,000,000 ohms resistance.

Circuit Symbols
Symbols are used
in an effort to
make the
diagrams easier to
draw and
understand.
The symbol for a
battery is not
drawn to indicate
any certain
voltage.
Circuit Symbols
The symbol used to
indicate resistance
can be used for
different types of
electrical devices
that consume
electrical energy – a
light bulb or any A/C
blower motor.
Assume that
conductors have no
resistance.
