NORTH VS SOUTH
On paper, the union was superior inevery single aspect(resource wise) to theconfederates. There were approximately 21million people living in the North, whileonly 9 million, including 3.5 million slaves,in the South. However despite, this“setback” the confederates had an equal orsometimes greater sized army in the first years of the war. This was because bothsides of the army, were widely comprised of  volunteers from the states. It was during thecivil war, that the old lottery method of electing and forming an army provedineffective because many of the rich peopleelected to fight the war, just paid poorpeople to avoid fighting.

Although they were no match tothe Union in any single aspect, the Southwere self-sufficient in their agriculture.They were also starting to build upfactories, and mills to set the foundation fortheir own industrial productions. Apart from that the South possessedmany experienced generals and militaryleaders that have already gone throughother wars and led them, for example theMexican War. Such generals including,Robert. E. Lee and Samuel Cooper,already possessed plenty of experiencebefore the civil war occurred. On the otherhand the Union army did not possess anoteworthy general or commander. TheUnion generals including GeneralSheridan, Grant, Sherman and Hookerwere all relatively new to the theme of war.Perhaps the greatest advantage that theSouth possessed over the North was the factthat the South was fighting to defend theirown territory while the North had toconquer new land. The South were fighting for their independence while the North wasfighting to become a union. It wasobviously a more difficult task to win,conquer and unite the country than tosimply defend your own territory.
