en route
by Death Eaters. Harrynarrowly escapes, but George Weasley loses an ear, while Hedwigand Mad-Eye Moody are killed. At the Burrow, Minister of MagicRufus Scrimgeour arrives to give Harry, Ron Weasley andHermione Granger bequests from Albus Dumbledore's will. Ronreceives the Deluminator, and Hermione is left a children's book,

. Harry inherits Godric Gryffindor'sSword and the Snitch he caught in his first-ever Quidditch match. The sword, however, was kept by the Ministry, who claimed it to be 'an important historical artifact'. They, while puzzled, presumethe items will help them in their Horcrux hunt. At Bill Weasleyand Fleur Delacour's wedding reception, Kingsley Shacklebolt'sPatronus arrives, announcing that Scrimgeour is dead and theMinistry of Magic has fallen under Voldemort's control. As DeathEaters approach, Harry, Ron and Hermione disapparate, escapingto a Muggle cafe. However, they are attacked by more DeathEaters. They take refuge in 12 Grimmauld Place, the former headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. It is also Harry'sinherited property from his late godfather, Sirius Black. The triolearn from Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna's father, that the crypticsymbol they have repeatedly encountered represents the threeDeathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the
Invisibility Cloak. When pressed about Luna's absence, Lovegoodadmits that Death Eaters abducted her in retaliation for supportingHarry in his paper,
The Quibbler
. Hoping for Luna's return, he hasalerted Death Eaters of the trio's whereabouts, but they escape.Snatchers later capture them when Harry utters Voldemort'stabooed name. They are taken to Malfoy Manor, where they jointhe imprisoned Luna, Dean, Ollivander and Griphook. FindingGryffindor's Sword among their possessions, Bellatrix Lestrangefears they have broken into her Gringotts vault, and torturesHermione for information. Help arrives in the form of Dobby, whoapparates into the cellar and rescues Luna, Dean and Ollivander. The noise made by apparating prompts Peter Pettigrew toinvestigate. He throttles Harry, but reminded of his life debt,Pettigrew loosens his grip, causing his own silver hand to chokehim to death in punishment. Harry and Ron rush upstairs. Rondisarms Bellatrix and Harry takes Draco's wand. Dobby reappears, and they disapparate to Bill and Fleur Weasley's cottage. Dobbydies after Bellatrix's knife pierces his chest during the escape. InHogsmeade, Aberforth Dumbledore smuggles the trio intoHogwarts. While Harry originally intended just to secretly searchfor the Horcrux and depart unobserved, his return rekindlesDumbledore's Army, whose members prepare to fight. Harry alertsthe Hogwarts staff to Voldemort's impending invasion, as alliescontinue arriving. Harry, meanwhile, must find the final Horcrux.Luna Lovegood suggests it could be Ravenclaw's lost diadem. They go to Ravenclaw's common room, but are confronted byAlecto Carrow, who calls Voldemort. They are saved by Professor McGonagall. She promptly sends out warnings to other membersof the staff via talking Patronuses about the impending battle withVoldemort. Severus has been alerted via the Dark Mark, butescapes Hogwarts after being overpowered by McGonagall,Professor Sprout and Professor Flitwick . Harry recalls seeing thediadem in the Room of Requirement when he hid his Potions book there. Meanwhile, Hermione destroys the Cup Horcrux with a basilisk fang that she and Ron retrieve from the Chamber of
Secrets. They go to the Room of Requirement and are attacked byMalfoy, Crabbe and Goyle. Crabbe mishandles the powerfulFiendfyre spell, killing himself and destroying the diadem, but theothers escape unharmed. Harry glimpses Voldemort's mind againand leads the trio to the Shrieking Shack. They witness Voldemortkill Snape with Nagini, believing it will make him the Elder Wand's master. As Snape dies, he gives Harry his memories that prove Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore, motivated by his lifelonglove for Harry's mother Lily. After being cursed by Gaunt's RingHorcrux, a doomed Dumbledore had ordered Snape to kill him at astrategic time, sparing Draco from carrying out Voldemort's order to murder him. It was Snape who sent the doe Patronus, as Snape'sunreciprocated love for Lily Evans resulted in his Patronus taking aform that mimicked Lily's: a doe. The memories also show thatHarry himself is a Horcrux; he must die in order to destroyVoldemort. Resigned to death, Harry approaches Voldemort'scamp in the Forbidden Forest, alerting none but Neville. Along theway, he finds the Resurrection Stone inside the Snitch andsummons the spirits of his parents, Sirius Black and the recentlykilled Remus Lupin, who accompany him to Voldemort's camp.Voldemort strikes him with Avada Kedavra Awakening in anethereal place, Harry is unsure whether he is alive or dead.Dumbledore appears and explains that Voldemort's Horcrux withinHarry has been destroyed. He says that just as Voldemort cannotdie while his soul fragments remain, Voldemort cannot kill Harry because he used Harry's blood (which carries the ancient magical protection his mother gave to him through her sacrifice years before) in his resurrection Voldemort's killing curse insteaddestroyed the only thing within Harry that did not carry LilyPotter's protection — the fragment of the Dark Lord's own soul heunknowingly passed to Harry the night his mother and father sacrificed themselves to save him. Harry glimpses a possibleoutcome for Voldemort: a weeping, deformed child thatDumbledore describes as 'beyond any of our help'. Harry is alsogiven an explanation as to why his wand acted on its own accord
