com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SENATOR VENTURE TARGETED FOR RECALL EFFORT Statewide neighborhood association wants to garner 5,000 signatures in four days (GREENLIN, WUNDERLAND) More than 500 residents representing neighborhoods from across the state announced Monday plans to initiate a recall effort against State Sen. Dean Venture, saying his support for a controversial voter ID bill has merited reclamation of theirs. Residents representing the Wunderland Association of Block Clubs, flanked by civil rights organizations and a handful of elected officials, announced that they will work to collect 5,000 signatures in four days in order to put a recall question about Venture on the ballot. The group opposes Ventures support of Senate Bill 1875, which would require Greenlin voters to provide two forms of ID in order to cast a ballot. State officials estimate that at least half a million voters would no longer be able to participate if the law is passed. We are standing up today for our seniors, our young people and every day working class people who will lose their role in the Democratic process because of this regressive and malicious attack from Dean Venture and others like him who put party before people, said Kira Shepherd, who heads the 100,000 member WABC. Anyone who wants to take our vote away will see what that really means, and we are starting by sending Dean Venture packing. The legislature is set to take up the measure in this Friday. Voters must collect at least 4,000 signatures to place the measure on the ballot, a figure which represents two-thirds of the votes that Venture received in the last election. Sen. Billy Ray Valentine whose district includes Greenlin joined WABC Monday to oppose the bill. The district is majority minority and has a median income of $45,000, This is a civil rights injustice that targets the minorities of my community who it would be a hassle to get two forms of ID, Valentine said.
