RESOLUTION
 
COMMENDING THE NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT EFFORTS FOR THE PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER TO BE CHOSEN AS ONE OFTHE WORLD'S NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF NATURE AND CALLING FOR THECANCELLATION OF ALL MINING ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE VICINITY OFPALAWAN TO PRESERVE ITS NATURAL BEAUTY 
 
WHEREAS,
the 8.2 kilometer Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) in Palawan is now oneof the provisional New Seven Wonders of Nature as announced onthehttp://www.new7wonders.comwebsite;
 
WHEREAS,
formed about 30 million years ago and considered as the longest underground river inthe world, the PPUR joins the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and TableMountain in the world’s new seven wonders list as announced on November 11, 2011 by 
 
Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, based in Zurich, Switzerland;
WHEREAS,
the national and local government efforts to campaign for electronic votes throughinternet and text messaging throughout the year involved 42,000 barangays at the grassroots andeven Pres. Benigno Aquino III himself, who issued Proclamation No. 182 for a national andinternational promotion campaign for the PPUR. According to Puerto Princesa City Mayor EdwardHagedorn, the campaign netted at least 50 million text and internet votes;
 
WHEREAS,
the global spotlight on the PPUR will help the government in boosting its tourismcampaign by highlighting the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage;
WHEREAS,
the PPUR 
 
has previously been declared a World Heritage Site by the United NationsEducational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its unique and outstanding scientific, biological, and geological features in December 1999 and a National GeologicalMonument by the Philippine government in December 2003;
 
WHEREAS,
the Philippine government must couple this effort with a long-term preservationeffort and a comprehensive eco-tourism program to ensure that the PPUR will not be degraded, if not destroyed by public or private “development” projects, most especially mining;
