November

21,

2011Dear

friends,

My

senior

year

of

high

school,

I

decided

to

take

a

class

called

Diversified

Occupations

because

others

told

me

I

could

leave

school

early

if

I

had

a

job!

I

was

already

working

at

a

local

store,

not

really

knowing

what

I

wanted

to

do

with

my

life

after

high

school.

I

was

torn

between

accounting

and

my

childhood

dream

of

becoming

a

teacher.

When

I

was

younger,

I

was

always

responsible

for

my

younger

cousins.

So,

what

do

you

do

with

three

kids?

I

taught

them

English!

My

parents

had

wood

panel

walls

and

those

walls

became

my

chalkboard.

I

created

"lesson

plans"

and

"schedules"

for

my

"students."

My

Diversified

Occupations

teacher

suggested

I

apply

for

a

position

at

Family

Connection

to

get

a

feel

for

the

elementary

school

environment.

On

Halloween

2007,

I

interviewed

to

be

an

administrative

assistant

and

was

hired!

When

I

started,

I

thought

it

was

just

another

job:

no

big

deal,

do

your

job,

get

paid.

Little

did

I

know

all

the

relationships

I

would

form

and

all

the

opportunities

I

would

gain.

It

all

started

when

my

fluency

in

Vietnamese

was

recognized

and

I

started

translating

for

families

referred

by

Family

Connection.

After

that,

I

was

hired

by

the

Easton

Area

School

District

as

a

translator

and

soon

after

as

a

substitute

paraprofessional.

Now,

I

am

an

administrative

assistant

and

a

teaching

program

assistant

for

Family

Connection’s

afterschool

program,

Cheston

Cougars

Learning

Club.

My

life

has

changed

so

much

since

I

started

working

for

Family

Connection

in

2007.

I’m

now

a

junior

at

Kutztown

University

majoring

in

elementary

education!
Cheston

Cougars

Learning

Club

(CCLC)

is

beneficial

for

students

that

need

academic

help.

We

have

volunteer

tutors

and

staff

to

assist

students

with

their

homework.

Not

only

do

the

students

benefit,

but

the

tutors

also

benefit

by

learning

patience

and

understanding

while

gaining

a

sense

that

we

have

made

a

difference.

When

I

leave

this

job

for

the

day,

I

am

proud

of

what

I

did

with

my

students

and

they

are

also

leaving

with

just

a

little

more

self-confidence.

I

love

the

position

that

I'm

in

because

I

get

to

do

a

little

bit

of

everything.

I

also

love

being

a

part

of

Family

Connection

participating

in

trainings

and

helping

families

throughout

the

school

district.

I've

learned

so

much

here

that

will

guide

me

into

my

future

career.

One

of

the

things

I

truly

enjoy

about

Family

Connection

is

meeting

the

grateful

families.

When

a

family

personally

tells

me

about

the

huge

impact

we

had

on

their

lives,

everything

I've

contributed

to

Family

Connection

seems

worthwhile.

Would

you

like

to

help

students

in

this

program?

Your

support

can

help

us

purchase

supplies

and

provide

activities

for

over

100

students.

In

addition

to

homework,

CCLC

includes

academic

enrichment

activities,

family

nights,

parent

workshops,

art

projects,

guest

speakers,

and

special

activities.

Even

a

small

contribution

will

help

provide

opportunities

for

our

students.Thank

you

for

your

support!

Sincerely,
