EC305.47 1
Recap

In the previous topics, you have leant about

• Single & double tuned circuits
• Application of above circuit
• Quality factor and band width of above circuit.

EC305.47 2
Objectives:

Upon completion of thisTopic you will be able to know:

• The function of receiver.
• Classification of receivers based on the service and its
working.
• Components of crystal a receiver.

EC305.47 3
Function of a receiver

 A receiver intercepts and picks up the transmitted

signals and recovers the original intelligence from them
faithfully.

EC305.47 4
Classifications of receivers

Radio receivers are generally classified according to

the type of service.

• AM broad cast receivers.

• FM broad cast receivers.
• T.V receivers.
• Communication receivers.
• Code receivers.
• Radar receivers.

EC305.47 5
Types of receivers

Based on the technique of operation receivers are

classified in to two categories.

3. Straight receiver.

2. Super heterodyne receiver.

EC305.47 6
Straight receivers are two types

1.Crystal receiver.

2.TRF receiver.

EC305.47 7
Components of crystal receivers

It is the simplest type of basic receiver.

It has four basic components.

1.The antenna.
2.Tuned circuit.
3.Crystal diode rectifier.
4.Head phones.

EC305.47 9
Working principle

• The antenna intercepts and picks up the EM waves

transmitted by the transmitter.

• When the EM wave strikes the receiving antenna it

converts in to the electrical signal.

• Tuned circuit selects the required signal depending on its

resonant frequency.

EC305.47 10
• The selected signal is given as input to the crystal diode.

• The crystal diode acts as a demodulator that separates

the carrier signal from the modulating signal.

• Head phones are used to convert the electrical signal in

to sound.

EC305.47 11
Advantages:

• It is very simple.

• Less cost.

EC305.47 12
Disadvantages:

• Poor sensitivity.

• Poor selectivity.

• It can cater to the needs of only a individual that can use

the head phones.

EC305.47 13
Summary:

After this topic we have learnt about :

• Function of receivers.
• Classification of receivers.
• Circuit diagram of crystal receiver.
• Components of crystal receiver.
• Working principle of crystal receiver.
• Advantages and disadvantages.
