Nu Flow Saves More Pipes for Energy Company

Not all that is broken should be replaced. Nu Flow rehabilitates failing underground pipe systems without replacing any pipes, which prevents costly demolition, mess and time-consuming cleanup while greatly extending the useful life of those pipes. Project: Line underground, concrete-covered emergency cooling water pipe system to stop and prevent leaks within the customers budget and time schedule. Customer: Tennessee Valley Authority is an energy corporation owned by the U.S. government and a repeat customer for Nu Flow. TVA provides electricity for 9 million people in seven southeastern states and also manages the Tennessee River system. Site: Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Plant is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and overlooks the Tennessee River. This pumpedstorage hydroelectric underground power station was built in 1978 and has four units that supply about 1,500 megawatts of power. System: The transformer emergency cooling water system is a 3,000 gallon per minute system at 95 psi operating pressure. The 8 ductile iron pipe lines are buried underground and embedded in concrete. The pipe system is more than 30 years old. Situation: The transformer emergency cooling water system pipes leaked back inside the pump vault through wall penetrations. This system is expected to supply emergency cooling water to station transformers, so a system failure is unacceptable. Since the pipe system runs beneath the plant and a nearby road, a messy re-pipe was not feasible for the customer because it could jeopardize the integrity of the plant and dam.

We proved again to the Tennessee Valley Authority that when they call Nu Flow with a problem, we have the solution. We were able to work closely with the customer to provide a cost-effective solution that prevented shutting down a power station.
- Justin Mohon, Field Operations Manager, Nu Flow

Solution: The customer had a strict budget and timeline for the work to be completed and Nu Flow was able to work with the customer to create an ideal solution. Nu Flow technicians installed our innovative structural liner using existing access points. This created a new, jointless pipe within the host pipe and preserved the storage plants property. Nu Flows Pull-in-Place structural liner will protect the pipes against future corrosion and leaks. When compared to a traditional re-pipe, our solution prevented the customer from having to shut down a power station, prevented a messy construction site and saved the structural integrity of the dam. Nu Flows long-term, in-place pipe rehabilitation technology has saved this pumped-storage plant from future emergency cooling water failures, providing priceless relief to the customer.
