The United Nations Human Rights Council report (2010), called upon the United States to:
1) Restore the habeas corpus right, which originated in the Magna Carta (1215);2) Criminalize torture, and3) Abolish slavery, which was never abolished following the Civil War (1861-1865).

In 2008, the Supreme Courtruledthat Guantnamo Bay prisoners who are not American citizens have the right ofhabeas corpus, allowing them to challenge the legality of their detention in federal court and seek release.The power of the ruling, however, has been eviscerated… have reduced to zero the number of habeas petitions grantedin the past year and a half.
