Um Cntaro, Uma Tocha e a Espada Do Senhor!

A Pitcher, a Torch, and the Sword of the Lord

(Judges 6-8)

It was a sad time for Israel. They were already living in the Promised Land, but the situation had become almost unbearable as they struggled to survive under the constant onslaughts of their enemies. Because of the sins of the Israelites who worshipped idols, God Himself sent the cruel Midianites against them as a scourge and a punishment for their sins. (Psalm 78:62; Joshua 23:13) The Israelites got desperate and cried out to the Lord for help. God , in His everlasting love and mercy, sent a helper.And guess who he was? He was the simple son of a farmer, not some influential, highly educated, esteemed man of renown. The Angel of the Lord appeared unto Gideon while he threshed wheat, saying, The Lord is with you, mighty man of valor! Go in this your might, and you will save Israel from the Midianites. But Lord, Gideon answered, How can I save Israel? My family is the poorest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and worse yet, I am the least of all my family.

Era uma poca infeliz para Israel. Eles j estavam vivendo na Terra Prometida, mas a situao tinha se tornado quase insuportvel enquanto se esforavam para sobreviver sob os constantes ataques dos seus inimigos. O Anjo do Senhor apareceu a Gideo enquanto ele malhava trigo e disse: -O Senhor contigo, varo valoroso! Vai nesta tua fora e livrars a Israel da mo dos midianitas. - Mas Senhor - respondeu Gideo como que eu posso salvar Israel? A minha famlia a mais pobre de todas na tribo de Manasss, e ainda por cima eu sou o menor de toda a minha famlia.

But the Lord encouraged him, saying, Surely I will be with you and you will smite the Midianites as quickly as one man. God wanted Gideon to know, He wanted all Israel to know that He would be with him and He would be their strength. Gideon didnt have to worry; of course his strength was small, of course he was weak, but God would do it all! And finally Gideon consented to simply obey and do as the Lord asked. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet and sent out messengers to rally the men of Israel to do battle against their evil enemies. From all quarters men began to join the ranks until he had a sizeable army of 32,000. The next morning they set out toward the North where the Midianites were camped down in a valley beside the hill of Moreh. This is when the biggest test of faith began for Gideon. He had raised a strong army and was headed for the enemy camp, but suddenly the Lord spoke to him, The people with you are too many for Me to let win this battle, otherwise Israel will boast, saying, My own arm has saved me.

Mas o Senhor o encorajou, dizendo: - Eu hei de ser contigo e tu ferirs aos midianitas como se fossem um s homem. Deus queria que Gideo soubesse, queria que todo Israel soubesse que Deus estaria com ele e que Deus seria a sua fora. Gideo no tinha que se preocupar, claro que ele tinha pouca fora, claro que ele era fraco, mas Deus faria tudo! E finalmente Gideo consentiu em simplesmente obedecer e fazer o que o Senhor pediu. E o Esprito do Senhor desceu sobre Gideo e ele tocou uma corneta e enviou mensageiros para convocar todos os homens de Israel batalha contra os seus maldosos inimigos. Os homens comearam a se juntar s fileiras vindos de todos os cantos, at que ele tinha um bom exrcito de 32.000 homens. Na manh seguinte, partiram em direo ao Norte onde os midianitas estavam acampados num vale junto colina de Mor. Foi aqui que comeou o grande teste da f de Gideo. Ele tinha reunido um forte exrcito e se dirigia ao campo do inimigo, mas de repente o Senhor falou com ele: - Muito o povo que est contigo para Eu deixar que ganhem esta batalha, a fim de que Israel no se glorie dizendo: "A minha mo me livrou."

Announce to the people, the Lord told Gideon, anyone who is fearful and afraid, let him return home. And after Gideon delivered his surprising message, 22,000 men left, over twothirds of his forces! But that was only the first test! Next, the Lord said to Gideon, The people are still too many; bring them down to the waters edge and I will try them there.

- Anuncia ao povo - disse o Senhor a Gideo - quem for covarde e medroso volte para casa. E depois que Gideo deu a sua mensagem surpreendente, 22.000 homens foram embora, mais de dois-teros das suas foras! Mas esse foi s o primeiro teste! A seguir o Senhor disse a Gideo: -Ainda h muito povo, faze-os descer at beira da gua e ali Eu os provarei. Quando os homens foram beber na beira da gua, o Senhor disse a Gideo que quem se ajoelhasse e bebesse com a boca na gua deveria ser mandado para casa. Mas os soldados vigilantes que levassem uma mo boca para beber sem se curvarem seriam escolhidos para a batalha. Dos 10.000 que passaram no primeiro teste, s 300 homens passaram no segundo! Isso mesmo, 31.700 deles foram reprovados. A f do jovem Gideo foi testada ao mximo. No s ele tinha perdido 99 por cento de todas as tropas que tinha reunido, mas os exrcitos dos midianitas eram de milhares e milhares. Na verdade, "eles jaziam no vale, como gafanhotos, em multido."

When the men went to drink beside the water, the Lord told Gideon that every man who knelt down and drank with his mouth in the water should be sent home. But those vigilant soldiers who lifted the water in one hand to drink would be chosen for battle.
Out of the 10,000 who passed the first test, only 300 men passed the second! Thats right, 31,700 of them never made the grade. Young Gideons faith got tested to the maximum. Not only had he lost 99 percent of all the troops hed gathered, but the armies of the Midianites were thousands and thousands. In fact, They lay along the valley like grasshoppers for multitude.

Gideon ordered all the 300 men to gather the extra provisions and water pots and all the trumpets from those men who were sent home, and then they moved to the highlands near the camp of the Midianites who lay sleeping in the valley below. The Lord told Gideon to give each man a trumpet, a torch, and an empty pitcher. At the right moment the torch was to be lighted and hidden inside the pitcher. Under cover of darkness Gideon placed his men in three companies surrounding the camp of the Midianites. Then in the middle of the night, at a signal from him, each man broke his pitcher, revealing the flaming torch. And every man blew his trumpet, and they shouted at the top of their voices, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon!

Nessa altura, Gideo tinha dado ordens a todos os 300 homens para juntarem todos os mantimentos extra e vasilhas de gua e todas as trombetas dos homens que tinham sido mandados embora, e depois foram para as terras altas perto do acampamento dos midianitas que dormiam no vale l em baixo. O Senhor disse a Gideo para dar a cada homem uma trombeta, uma tocha e um cntaro vazio. No momento certo a tocha deveria ser acesa e escondida dentro do cntaro. A coberto da escurido Gideo dividiu os seus homens em trs companhias cercando o campo dos midianitas. Depois, no meio da noite, ao sinal dado por ele, cada homem quebrou o seu cntaro, revelando a tocha acesa. E cada homem tocou sua trombeta e gritou com toda a fora: "Espada do Senhor, e de Gideo"!

And did it work? Well, they made an incredible racket with all those trumpets blowing and all the pitchers breaking, and when those sleeping Midianites awoke and suddenly saw all those lights flashing, they thought the whole world had attacked! They became so excited in the dark that they began smiting one another and they fled frantically, deserting the camp. Imagine, only 300 men with nothing but trumpets, pitchers and torches scared the living daylights out of 135,000 men, and it says that after the battle was over 120,000 had been slaughtered! A great victory was won, as great as any in Israels history.

E ser que funcionou? Bem, eles fizeram uma barulheira incrvel com todas essas trombetas tocando e os cntaros se quebrando, e quando esses midianitas, que estavam dormindo, acordaram e viram todas aquelas luzes brilhando, pensaram que o Mundo inteiro tinha atacado! Eles ficaram num tal alvoroo no meio da escurido que comearam a se atacar uns aos outros e fugiram freneticamente, abandonando o campo.

Imagine, s 300 homens, com nada a no ser trombetas, cntaros e tochas deixaram 135.000 homens mortos de medo, e diz que quando terminou a batalha, 120.000 homens tinham morrido! Foi ganha uma grande vitria, to grande quanto qualquer outra na Histria de Israel.

When Gideon finally reached the point where he just meekly believed Gods Word and quietly went about his business of obeying Him, then God honored his puny little band of 300, and the Lord blessed their humble little efforts with a mighty walloping victory over a tremendous enemy in about the most ridiculous battle ever heard of in the annals of history! Gideon went where God wanted him to go-and God went there too! And so did his little band of 300, and they did it because God did it through them. All through the Bible the Lord miraculously empowered and protected His children who were just weak humans like we are.And the same miracles that occurred back in Bible times can happen now! Quando Gideo finalmente chegou ao ponto em que acreditou mansamente na Palavra de Deus e fez calmamente o que tinha para fazer: obedecer a Deus, ento Deus honrou o seu insignificante grupinho de 300 homens, e Deus abenoou os seus humildes esforos com uma vitria retumbante sobre um inimigo tremendo na batalha praticamente mais ridcula j registrada nos anais da Histria! Gideo foi onde Deus queria que ele fosse - e Deus tambm foi! E o seu grupinho de 300 homens tambm foi, e eles venceram porque Deus venceu atravs deles. Em toda a Bblia, Deus sempre deu poder e protegeu milagrosamente os Seus filhos que no passavam de fracos seres humanos como ns. - E os mesmos milagres que ocorreram nos tempos antigos da Bblia podem acontecer agora!
