Innovative conceptualization of ecosystem’s biomachinery (a new scientific
term that was proposed by the author; it means ecological mechanisms thatinclude biological communities and biodiversity) which improves waterquality. The innovative experimental data analysis, concepts, andgeneralizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the newqualitative theory of biocontrol of water quality in a systematized form. Thetheory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine ecosystems.
The theory is supported by the results of the author’s experimental studies
of the effects exerted by some chemical pollutants including syntheticsurfactants, detergents, and other xenobiotics on aquatic organisms. The

A new conceptualization which is based on his suggestion toidentify a new type of matter in the biosphere. The authorcalled it «ex-living matter» (ELM). The author discusses hisexperiments (together with his co-authors) which provide thefactual foundation to this conceptualization;

A saga of international odyssey of the author in discoveringthe hidden but gigantic biospheric role of underwaterorganisms that filter water. A
review of the author’s
quest tofind the true role of aquatic organisms, mainly marine andfreshwater invertebrates that are filter-feeders - biologicalfilters - as a vital part of the biosphere and hydrosphere. Thestudies were conducted in the best laboratories of fourcountries of both hemispheres.

This paper presents a new conceptualization of how almost allaquatic organisms (biological species, biodiversity, biota,biological community) function together toward up-gradingwater quality. A new theory of water self-purification byaquatic (freshwater, marine) ecosystems was presented in thispaper. Among the issues that were covered:(1)The biotic community as a mechanism of water self-purification processes.(2)Water pollution with sublethal concentrations of syntheticsurfactants of various classes can inhibit biofiltration inecosystems, thereby giving rise to additional aspects of ecological hazards.(3) New experimental evidence of the vulnerability of theactivity of filter-feeders to somechemicals/xenobiotics/pollutants.(4) Innovative analysis of the filtration of water by filter-feeders, which has a serious conditioning effect on aquaticecosystems.Ostroumov S.A.
