This research paper investigates power control algorithms for femtocells that can beperformed locally with minimal network intervention. In the Calibration Techniques, the transmitted power in the femtocell is adjusted so they donot change their transmitting power frequently. In Adaptive Power Control Scheme, thetransmitted power of the femtocells is adjusted as to achieve the minimal target data rates.
Operators, due to decreasing number of Average Revenue per User (ARPU), are nowintroducing more bundled home services such as voice, data and television as triple play andmobile access which adds another dimension to this scenario. But since the spectrum isscarce, the technologies of 3G and above have to operate at 2 GHz and higher, which causesspotty mobile coverage indoors because of the phenomenon of increased signal deterioration /degradation at higher frequencies. One of the solutions to this problem is using Femtocells. In combination with a macrocellnetwork, femtocells can significantly reduce the network costs.
Figure 1: Femtocell Deployment
Femtocells are low-power wireless access points that operate in licensed spectrum to connect
standard mobile devices to a mobile operator’s network using residential DSL or cable
broadband connections.Femtocells deliver significantly improved coverage inside homes, small and large offices, and outdoor public spaces (metro hotspots and rural). This means a stronger signal and bettervoice quality, plus improved data download and upload speeds. Femtocells also facilitate a
new breed of mobile service that exploits the technology’s ability to detect presence, and
connect and interact with home networks.
