FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Missoula County Sheriff’s office and the police department have seen a bigupswing in vehicle break-in thefts over the past few years. We have usedseveral tactics to try and curb this problem including working with the media toencourage people to lock their vehicles and not leave valuable items in sight. We also encourage neighbors to look out for each other.During the early morning hours of November 28, 2011 watchful neighbors helpedthe Sheriff’s Office apprehend a juvenile female (age 17) who was breaking intoseveral vehicle. One neighbor in the Spurgin Road area called 911 to report thatthey saw a female standing near a neighbor’s garage and another neighbor called 911 to report that they saw a suspicious female disappear in a field near their house. When deputies responded and searched the field they found thefemale lying face down in the dirt. She told the deputies that she was “joggingand became scared when all of the sheriff’s deputies arrived in the area.” Thisseemed unreasonable to the deputies and they also noted that she was notdressed for jogging and had a black nylon case with her.The suspect quickly admitted to breaking into vehicles in the area and had takena coin purse from one of the vehicles which was later found in the black case shehad. She was arrested and charged with Trespass to Property, Trespass toVehicles, Theft, Obstructing (for lying), and possession of burglary tools (leather gloves which were used to conceal her fingerprints). The Sheriff’s Office and victims of various crimes are grateful anytime thatneighbors look out for each other and call 911 when they see somethingsuspicious. As you can see from this story, it can make a difference. We alsoappreciate those who call Crime Stoppers and provide anonymous tips. Folkscan also call us directly with case information by calling our property crimesdivision, Sgt. TJ McDermott at 258-4810.
