Curriculum Links: I. Interchange fractions, percentages and decimals II. Use the mathematical vocabulary of fractions: improper, mixed numbers
Learning Objectives: a. be able to estimate fraction amounts b. be able to interconvert fractions to percentages and decimals
Teaching Sequence
Review/Hook - setup containers/vessels (everyday item at each of the groups - ll the container/vessels up to a given level; provide a sample that is a baseline for 1 - students to use their senses to estimate the fraction, percentage and decimal value of the vessels/containers with less than 1 - estimates to be recorded in notebooks; may work with partners Main 1. Tell students that there will be an exit ticket at the end of the lesson 2. State the learning objectives 3. Ask students if they can change: use graphic organizer - fractions to decimals - fractions to percentages - decimals to fractions - decimals to percentages - percentages to fractions - percentages to decimals 4. Go through the ratio, percent and probability.ipchart, while students take notes; answer questions 5. Go through the percent triangle 23.ipchart (guided conversions between fractions, decimals, and percentages) - students to participate at their groups and at the whiteboard 6. Practice - #1-16 from ipchart; done in notebooks Plenary - give the triangle for students to use - A jar is holding 28 toy airplanes. It is only 75% full. How many toy airplanes can it hold in total
Blooms Tax Questions Engagement Strategies What is a percentage? What fraction of the container is full? How are percentages and decimals similar? Describe how decimals and fractions are different. Think pair share Wait time Exit ticket
