CATCHER IN THE RYE

Chapter 1 1) Holden is a sixteen year-old boy but acts like hes older. He is the main character in the novel. He doesnt like much things or persons; he can also be very irritating. He goes to private high school- Pencey Prep and his parents are quite wealthy. 2) D.B. is Holdens elder brother who is a writer. He moved to Hollywood to write for the film industry, which Holden feels is a waste of talent and so he is contemptuous of D.B. 3) Pencey Prep is full of phony boys, who mostly come from very wealthy families. This boarding school has its own rules and values, which are written nowhere. In the advertisements its represented as very good and educational school, but in reality is just as good as any other school. 4) Because the fencing team is mad at him, because he left foils in the subway; or maybe because he had been expelled. 5) She was a daughter of Pencey Preps headmaster and Holden liked her because she didnt give then a lot of horse manure about what a great guy her father was. 6) Hes Holdens History teacher at Pencey Prep and Holdens going to visit him because he wants to say goodbye to Mr. Spencer. 7) Because he wanted to feel sorry or sad for being expelled from Penecy Prep. 8) He wants to find out if hes going to miss them. 9) Very. 10) Because he cant take responsibility for his actions.

Chapter 2:

1) An old blanket. 2) That life is a game and you should play it according to the rules. 3) No, he thinks that life is a very unfair game and its good only if youre on the side where all the hot-shots are. 4) Yes, it really was the fourth school he attended. 5) He thought that grand is a really phony word. 6) So Mr. Spancer would feel bad about flunking him.

7) He was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park. 8) Because Elkton Hills School was full of phonies. 9) Holden said he has to go to the gym. 10) He said he is just going through a phase.

Chapter 3:

1) Ossenburger is a man who donated a lot of money to the Pencey Prep. 2) The substance of Ossenburgers speech was religious. 3) His brother D.B. and Ring Lardner. 4) The book is outstanding to Holden if, when hes done reading, he wants that the author would be his terrific friend. 5) Ackley was picking up personal stuff and talking about unimportant stuff. 6) Holden finds annoying that Ackley never put the tings back to where they were before. 7) Ackley considered it funny when tennis racket fell on Holdens head from the closet. 8) Because Stradlater has superior attitude all the time. 9) Holden said to Ackley that he just doesnt know Stradlater well enough. 10) Hounds-tooth jacket.

Chapter 4:

1) Stradlater was a secret slob, he always looked good but he had some nasty habits. 2) To write him a composition for English. 3) To stick commas in the right place. 4) That H. Coyle had a perfect build for basketball. 5) That Stradlaters sense of humor isnt bad. 6) Jane wouldnt move any of her kings; she would leave it in the back row. 7) That Janes mothers boyfriend ran around the house naked. 8) Because guys like Stradlater never give your regards to people. 9) He orders Holden not to knock himself out, he must be only descriptive.

Chapter 5:

1) Because when parents would ask their children what did they had for dinner last night and would answer steak in would seem very fancy. 2) He always had to know who else is going. 3) Because they had all already seen the picture that was playing. 4) They both laugh like hyenas at stuff that wasnt even funny. 5) Bridge. 6) He described his brothers baseball mitt. 7) So that he would have something to read when he was out in the field. 8) He had leukemia. 9) He broke all the windows in the garage. 10) Dislike.

Chapter 6:

1) Because he liked Jane and he knew what kind of guy Stradlater was. 2) Stradlater told Holden to make a descriptive about a room or a house, but Holden wrote about a baseball glove. 3) Nowhere, they just sat in the car. 4) Holden didnt like athletes; his attitude towards them was a bit hateful. 5) Because Stradlater wouldnt tell him what he and Jane did in the car. 6) Morons hate when you call them a moron. 7) He was afraid he fractured Holdens skull. 8) He put on his hunting hat. 9) He thought it made him look tough. Chapter 7:

1) Because its very late. 2) Ackley wasnt too keen about Holden sleeping in his roommates bed. 3) Holden told Ackley it was about him. 4) About Jane.

5) Stradlater liked to have sex when he was on a date. 6) Stradlater didnt even care to look around where Holden was. 7) When Holden start to talk about religions. 8) He decided to leave Pencey Prep. 9) Because mother bought him those ice-skates and he yet didnt told her that he flunk. 10) He is sad and wants to cry.

Chapter 8:

1) It was too late at night to call up a cab. 2) Its not too bad .Its not paradise or anything, but its as good as most schools. 3) Mrs. Morrow thinks Ernest is such a sensitive boy and not a terribly good mixer. 4) He told her Ernest is a strange guy and it takes time to get to know him. 5) Because Ernest wouldnt let his class to nominate him. 6) She thought Holden was ill. 7) He laid he had a surgery. 8) Because he told her that was his real name. 9) At Gloucester. Chapter 9:

1) He went into phone booth. 2) He discussed where the ducks in the Central park go when the lagoon freezes over. 3) He thought that the hotel was full of perverts and morons. 4) He was this very old guy around sixty-five. He was even more depressing then the room was. He was one of those bald guys that comb all their hair over from the side to cover up the baldness. 5) He thought it was bad but did it anyway. 6) The sex rules. 7) He would tell that her uncle just died in an accident. 8) He wasnt in the mood.

9) From Eddie Birdsell. Chapter 10:

1) It was too late in the night. 2) Holden thought that Phoebe was the smartest in the prettiest kid we have ever seen, you can tall he really loved her. 3) A buck. 4) The girls were wearing hats. 5) They started giggling. 6) She told Holden that earlier in the evening they saw a celebrity. 7) No. 8) He gave Bernice a kiss on the top of her hair. 9) No. 10) old Marty was like dragging the Statue of Liberty around the floor.

Chapter 11:

1) Yes. 2) Tennis and golf. 3) Dog of Janes used to come over at Holdens house and relieve himself on their lawn, so Holdens mother got really irritated about it. 4) Poetry. 5) Not really. 6) Something that had to do with Janes mothers boyfriend, but even Holden never found what it was. 7) Very. 8) Holdens brother used to go there. 9) Ernie was a big fat colored guy that played the piano. 10) He thought of himself as a big-shot.

Chapter 12:

1) Saturday night in NY. 2) He was good, but a bit touchy guy.

3) About the ducks. 4) There were mostly prep schools jerks and collage jerks. 5) The whole crowd wanted to see face of Ernies although he wasnt any good. 6) Ernie supposedly didnt know whatever he was playing right or not. 7) The guy was telling a girl about some pro football game and he was really boring so the girl wasnt interested but she had to listen to him because she was ugly. 8) Ex-girlfriend of Holdens brother D.B. 9) That D.B. was in Hollywood. 10) He thought its stupid to say things like that to someone you are even happy to meet. Chapter 13:

1) Because he felt like walking. 2) About thieves at Pencey Prep. 3) A good drinker. 4) Depressed. 5) He felt really depressed. 6) He thinks its stupid. 7) No. 8) He felt even more depressed. 9) When he thought how no one knew Sunny was a prostitute. 10) He said he had a rough night.

Chapter 14:

1) About Allie. 2) They were all right after Jesus was dead, but while he was alive, they were about as much use to him as a hole in the head. 3) Holden thought that Jesus never sent Judas to hell. 4) Jesus chose his disciples so people liked them, at random. 5) He was psychic.

Chapter 15:

1) When he went to movies with Ackley. 2) Jane. 3) Under the clock at the Biltmore. 4) His mother was very nervous. 5) Because they were expensive. 6) Bourgeois. 7) Slagle had a good sense of humor. 8) English, History and American government. 9) Catholics are always trying to find out if youre a catholic too. 10) He was smoking a cigarette and by mistake blew some smoke in nuns faces. Chapter 16:

1) He thought about hard times they must have collecting money. 2) Kid was in his own world, singing and not watching where he was going. 3) She liked shows that were supposed to be very sophisticated and dry, with Lunts in. 4) He wanted to get off Broadway as soon as possible. 5) Holden liked to skate in the exact same place as Phoebe did. 6) She didnt have any gloves on so her hands were all red and cold. 7) Happy. 8) She always wanted to hold hand and they were always sticky and sweaty. 9) Everything always stayed right where it was. 10) No.

Chapter 17:

1) He was looking at girl and wondering what will happen to them. 2) He was intelligent and he could whistle extremely well. 3) They could all be intelligent or good whistlers. 4) Sally wanted that Holden grows his hair. 5) Lunts acted like they knew they were celebrities. 6) Sally was too busy rubbering and being charming because they were standing next to a celebrity. 7) Flannel suits and checkered vests. 8) Sally wanted to see herself in one of those little skirts that just come down over their butt. 9) They were the worst. Chapter 18:

1) He went to a drugstore. 2) They tell other that this boy has an inferiority complex. 3) Because his parents were poor. 4) He had some time to kill. 5) Jesus would have liked that guy that played the kettle drums in orchestra. 6) Alec got smacked in the head with a cricket ball. 7) She was crying during the movie. 8) D.B. drove some cowboy general around. 9) D.B. hated the army but in the same time he liked this character which was a Lieutenant. Chapter 19:

1) These French babes were singing next to a piano every night. 2) Phonies. 3) Because the bartender was a snob. 4) Luce was supposed to be Holdens Student Adviser. 5) Certainly.

6) Around her late thirties. 7) Eastern philosophy is more satisfactory than Western. 8) Luce always made Holden to describe the most personal stuff. 9) To go see a psychoanalyst. 10) Luce had the largest vocabulary.

Chapter 20:

1) He asked him to send his message to Valencia. 2) He was pretending to be shot and with his hand on the stomach he kept the blood from dripping all over the place. 3) He pictured that Sally just got home from a date. 4) Holden suggested to piano player that he ought to go on a radio. 5) She told Holden she was old enough to be his mother. 6) He would have jumped a mile if he saw someone. 7) He wanted his body to thrown in the river. 8) He was in a hospital. Chapter 21:

Chapter 22:

1) Phoebe was like fencing team at Pencey.

Chapter 23:

1) Mr. Antolini was very nice. 2) Holden. 3) He was out of his breath. 4) The maid breathed on Phoebe whenever she put something down. 5) In the bathroom. 6) Because he had his bags at the station. 7) Because if he did he wouldnt saw Phoebe in a play. 8) At Mr. Antolinis. 9) She put an arm around his neck. 10) He gave it to Phoebe.

Chapter 24:

1) He didnt like the idea of it. 2) Because Mrs. Antolini had just arose from the sack. 3) You had to know how to stick to the point all the time. 4) Because Richard didnt always stuck to the point. 5) He started to miss them if he didnt saw them for a while. 6) The point of the quote was how to live your life. 7) Holden will have to apply to school.

8) Only educated and scholarly men are able to contribute something to the world. 9) The money isnt Holdens its mothers. Chapter 25, Chapter 26:

1) He slept in the waiting room at the station. 2) What Mr. Antolini will tell to Mrs. Antolini. 3) He wanted to call Jane. 4) They could only ask him to come back if someone was really sick. 5) She was wearing a red hunting hat. 6) Phoebe wanted to go away with Holden. 7) Saying that he would go away. 8) Holden was afraid that Phoebe would fell off. 9) We dont know. 10) About his life.
