For those who passed under the ethnic of Romans were in reality Greeks, i.e.,
Greeks in language and cultureThe Byzantine empire, of course, included
numerous ethnic groups but these groups always referred to by their own ethnic
names as Armenians, Iberians, Slavs, etc., not as Romans In general, the Romans
were the Greeks. The use of the term Romans by Nicetas is not surprising. He
means, of course, Greeks. Nicetas was a Greek. He spoke Greek, he wrote in Greek,
he was educated in Greek, and he shared the sentiments of the medieval Greeks 1.
