What I like: What I dont like: Books When other children cry... I Puzzles get upset too. Painting Very loud noises like the lawn Musical toys mower Bubbles people that i do not know Playing Chasey Games Sometimes, I can get upset if I The Wiggles am told no to something. Dora the Explorer Sesame Street Mickey mouse/Goofy/Donald Duck etc Toy Story Hide and seek (Sally has a low proprioceptive input and needs a firm touch to feel contact. This is why she will push people or squeeze people .... She is unable to feel a gentle touch at times) I have some sensory issues: I can sometimes get upset if things become too loud or if the lights are too bright. I can sometimes get upset if things are not in the right place or if things are out of order. When I get upset: I may wave my hand and say No. I may put my head in my hands and sulk. I may burst in to tears and tell you that I am sad. I feel the need to squeeze things.. This can also lead me to pinch people or hug them VERY hard I may pretend that my hands are talking to me and I talk back to them and tell them why i am upset. (you just need to listen really hard to what Sally is saying at this point and it can really help to understand the problem) Strategies for sensory overload: Please stick to 2 word sentences at times like these. i.e Stop Sally, or Calm Down Sometimes a strong hug can help as Sally likes the pressure (this doesnt always work though!) Guide Sally to the chill out area and give her a book to read or some dolls to play with. Do not make eye contact Do not speak to her until she has calmed down If it is ok with the you, please allow her as much time as she needs to calm down.. She will struggle to participate in activities if she is in sensory overload. NB: if Sally has a Stare Bear look about her, she is in sensory overload and trying to selfcalm.. Please allow her time to de-stress before you call on her.. 12
