I became a nurse in the year 2002 as a graduate from an associate’s degree program at a community college. At that time paper documentation was standard andtechnology had just begun to infiltrate the healthcare field. Throughout the eight years I practiced as a care giver, I was involved in the implementation of the electronic medicalrecord (EMR) on the medical-surgical floor and in the emergency department.I have always been comfortable with and fascinated by technology. For threeyears in high school I worked as a student aide for the technology director. Thisexperience allowed me to feel comfortable when changes began to occur in my professional setting years later. With the implementation of the EMR on my floor I became a super-user and the local “go-to-girl” for any computer related issues my co-workers had on my shift. I would trouble-shoot computer glitches, frozen programs, lostdocumentation, and provide tips and tricks to the nurses I worked with who were lesscomputer-savvy.During my under-graduate studies at Ferris State University the discussion of technology in healthcare remained a hot topic. I had the opportunity to discuss the use of technology to educate patients on disease processes and signs and symptoms to worryabout. I also wrote a paper on the use of technology to promote health using computers programs to encourage healthy diet plans and exercise routines. My fascination with technology in healthcare has grown exponentially sinceFebruary of 2010, when I accepted a position as a Quality Assurance Coordinator at adifferent hospital. In this position, I review patient charts to ensure the practice of evidence based guidelines set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services aswell as the Joint Commission. The projects I work on in this position are closely related
