 Relatively few mobile application developers focus on the potentialthat smartphone apps have to help people with disabilities play amore active and independent role in society. Yet, over one billionpeople live with some form of disability. Hence, Vodafone partneredwith AGE Platform Europe and the European Disability Forum(EDF) to develop the Smart Accessibility awards. The winners of theinaugural awards have just been announced. The winningsmartphone apps whose developers will s
hare the €200,000 prize
fund are:
 – 
BIG launcher; Help Talk; Wheelmap; and Zoom Plus Magnifier. Theyare all Android apps and three of them are in the Android Market but

CEO, said, “Vodafone is committed to doing all we can to empower consumers of 
all ages and abilities: we want to extend the smartphone revolution to as many
communities as possible.”

 Help Talk from 1000 Empresas ( which won the award in the wellbeing category)is designed for people who are unable to communicate by speech, whetherpermanently or temporarily, such as those recovering from strokes.The application presents a set of commands represented by icons which whentapped
„speak‟ the basic need or desire – 
 
such as „I‟m thirsty‟ or „I feel pain‟ – 
andgoes on to allow the user to provide further detail in the same way.Even though

found out who created Help Talk (1000 Empresas)thanks to the

 here.  However, you are still going to have a lot of trouble finding it. Help, talk and speak 
are extremely common search words. There‟s
some sort of bitter irony here.
