The Future Workspace
Perspectives on Mobile and Collaborative Working
Editors: Hans Schaffers, Torsten Brodt, Marc Pallot, Wolfgang Prinz
The MOSAIC Consortium
Our working environment is in a process of transition. Due to theforces of globalisation and competition, location has diminished inimportance. Mobility adds a new quality to the flexibility of knowledgeworkers, but could be constrained in the future due to concerns aboutsustainable development. New forms of collaboration are emerging, such as the community of professionals. Collaboration acrossorganisational boundaries has become important, if not an imperative, and is enabled by user-friendly information and communication technologies and new ways of working. The word “place” embodiesnew meanings. Collaborative shared workspaces are increasinglycomplementing the physical workplaces we are used to.This book presents key results of the MOSAIC project (FP6-2003-IST-2,March 2004 - October 2005). In addressing the future workspace andnew ways of working, it investigates the current practice, futurescenarios and challenges for research and innovation, resulting in aresearch agenda for the future. The agenda is based on an analysis of technological, organisational and social developments, as well as oncase studies in three thematic domains: engineering, rural andregional working, and health and wellbeing.Besides, the bookaddresses the emerging societal challenges related to new andinnovative ways of mobile working. The book concludes withrecommendations for an innovative and socially sustainableworkspace design of the future.ISBN-10: 90-75176-00-7ISBN-13: 978-90-75176-00-1
