Justaseveryriseandfallofourfootstepsissubjecttothe invisiblelawofgravitationandevenananimalwhohasnoideaofanylawofnaturesubmits,thoughunconsciously,tothatlaw,similarlyallpeoplesubmittophilosophicalthought,eitherconsiouslyorunconsciously.Ifwelook deepintothewaysofeasternliving,wefindthewholelife fallingvictimtothiswaveofpessimism.Theentireorientalconceptionoflifecanbeepitomizedinoneword
pessimism.
Theeasternerslookuponlifeassomethingevil,athingwhichisworthbeingrenounced.LordBuddhadescribedtheworldtransitory,fullofsorrowandsuffering,thoughheacceptedpossibilityofemancipa-tion.ThegreatShankaracharyaregardstheworldasbigillusion,a
maya.
Itiscommontocomparelifetoabubbleonthesurfaceofwaterortoadream.Theunsu-bstantialityoflifeisathemethatismorepopularwiththe

poetsandsavantsoftheEast.Therenunciationoftheworldhasalwaysbeenthechiefaimofthesages.Pessi-misticphilosophynegatestheverypurposeandmeaningoflife.Optimismisthechiefmotorofallhumaninstitutions.Allprogressdependsuponhope.Assoonasyouarecon- vincedoftheunrealityoflifeyouaredeprivedofthe generativepowerofallactivities.Iftheworldisunreal, ifwestandfacetofacewithabigillusion,anabysmal nothingness,whatisitthatweshouldworkfor?Iftheworldisnothingbutadream;thenallourtroublesand joys.allactivitiesandinactivitiesareonlyadreamandwe nomorethandreamers.Allpatrioticandphilanthropic institutions·alleffortstoalleviatethesufferingsofmenand animalsaremeaningless.Whatdodiscoveriesandinven- tionsmeantoamanwhofeelsthattheworldinwhichhe livesisanillusion?Whowillliketoimprovethelifeif, howeverimproved,itisnomorethanabubble?WhatpleasurecantheUniversevouchsafeforhimwho looksuponitasaprisonhouse?Whatbeautycanthesun, themoonthestarsandotherobjectspresenttohimwhothinksthatsheermisfortunehasbroughthimtothislife,which,thesoonercomestoanend,thebetter?Willhelike topraythatthislifeofprisonbelengthened?Willhepraythatothersintheformofsons,grandsonsandfriendsshouldalsocomeandsharewithhimthemiseriesofim-prisonment?Whoamongthemostfoolishofprisoners,is suchafoolthatwhendestinedtoimprisonmentmightrequestthejailauthoritiestodragwithhimtotheprisonhouse,hisfamilyandfriends.
