Background

Initially this project was funded by CALTRANS to conduct a field investigation of representative General Aviation asphalt runway pavements. This was to be follow by alaboratory investigation and the results were to be reported from that study. The projectname of that study (CALTRANS research task #0564, contract 65A0173) was
CGAR Durability of Asphalt Pavement in General Aviation Airports in California under  Different Weather and Traffic Conditions.
As the project progressed both theCALTRANS managers and researchers realized that the needs of CALTRANS could bebetter met by modifying the scope. The revised study better meets CALTRANS needs and was agreed upon by those whoreviewed and were responsible for recommending funding. This project beganapproximately a year after the initial funding. The new work was conducted under theinitial funding contract with a no-cost time extension.
