Between the Edendale post ofce and the terminuso the Glendale reeway, Glendale Boulevard is anunloved stretch o roadway hurried through by motoristsgenerally on their way to or rom work. Nobody pays thestreet much attention, and it shows in the dirty trashblowing on the broken sidewalks, and the vigorousweeds sprouting rom the soiled gutters.But Echo Park resident—and Glendale Boulevard jogger—Josh Post sees this grimy urban street as apotentially scrubbed clean and well-kept boulevard. So,on a bright and sunny Saturday morning, he got a headstart on making that vision come true.Tall and intense, Josh inspired dozens o residents andvolunteers to spend several morning hours flling garbage

 A community saety meeting was heldon Wednesday, October 19, 2011, atPlacencia Elementary School. Led byPatton Allianza Coalition, a communitygrass roots organization, the meetingwas held to discuss saety measures withemphasis on pedestrian saety.In the early morning hours o TuesdaySeptember 27, 2011, three students ontheir way to school were involved in anautomobile accident at the intersectiono Laveta Terrace and Temple Street.

bags with trash, sweeping sidewalks anddigging dirt out o gutters along GlendaleBoulevard, and uncomortably close tovehicles speeding past.Boys and girls rom Saint Teresa o Avila Catholic school, located just a littlearther north on Glendale Boulevard,enthusiastically raked leaves under thedirection o some o their teachers.The kids rom Central City ActionCommittee have always helped out andthis time was no exception. Some o thesidewalks they cleaned had been dirt-covered so long that no one rememberedthe existence o pavement underneath!Los Angeles Conservation Corps felded acrew as well.Residents who pitched in were joined byMitch O’Farrell and Alejandra Marroquin,deputies rom Council District 13, who setto with a will, digging their shovels into theheavy dirt obstructing the storm drains.Delilah Bakery made sure everyonegot o to a good start with a breakasto resh mufns and coee served atthe staging area o the Jack in the Boxparking lot. When the morning’s work wasover, Feeding Birds boutique rewardedvolunteers with silkscreened “I HeartEcho Park” t-shirts rom a nearby tabletopduring the event.It would be a stretch to call this part oGlendale Boulevard immaculate yet, but itdoes have a bit o a shine on it or theholidays. Take a good look the next timeyou’re over there and see what Josh Postand your neighbors have accomplished.By the way, don’t worry i you missedthis clean up—Josh has more planned.

This intersection is very dangerous as isPatton St. at Temple St, both sites need apedestrian crosswalk.The meeting had the support o Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina,City o Los Angeles Mayor AntonioVillaraigosa, LAUSD Board PresidentMónica Garciá, the Echo Park Improvement Association (EPIA), and the Echo Park Branch Library. In attendance werecommunity members like Bennett Kayser(LAUSD District 5 school board member),Elmer Roldan (Community Aairs Deputyo LAUSD Board President Monica Garica’sofce), Lourdes Ortiz o the LAUSD, CarlosTorres (Environmental Health Manage,Saety & IH), Saety Ofcer Siegert oSchool Police, LAPD, and MaryAnn Hayashio Central City Action Committee.Each spoke on what we as a communitycan do to make our community pedestriansae. We acknowledged that this communityhas a high density o pedestrian usage,and we must act now to prevent anotheraccident. We acknowledged that trafc onEdgeware Road between Temple Streetand Court must be alleviated, even valetparking was discussed.The energy in the auditorium waselectriying and I knew together we wouldmake a change. The 50 plus people in theaudience contributed by asking questionsand oering answers - as one person said,“The pedestrian is frst and oremost, andthe vehicle is second.” Another said thecity has a responsibility to pedestrians.The Patton Allianza Coalition has beenworking on getting a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection o Patton Street andTemple Street since a parent was hit ontheir way to pick up children at PlacenciaElementary School. We have been toldthat LADOT is doing a study and we hopeto learn o the results soon. The study islong overdue.With the support o the various ofces,community members, the meeting was ahuge success. Patton Allianza Coalitiionwill have a meeting soon to inorm thecommunity o the latest news on boththe intersections o Patton and TempleStreet and Laveta Terrace, which are alldangerous intersections. There is doublethe danger, there must be double thesaety. Two pedestrian crosswalks doessound nice!
