Greetings
The 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main marks a half century of success in and for the city of Frankfurt, and I extend both my personal best wishes and my heartfelt congratulations as mayor of the city. The evolution of the SINN company from a start-up to a global success story exhibits many parallels to the development of the city of Frankfurt am Main, while other aspects are quite different which in itself is evidence that the company and Frankfurt are a perfect match. Fifty years ago Frankfurt am Main was only beginning its rise to becoming Germany's economic and financial centre. At the time no one knew it would grow into a leader on the European stage. Fifty years ago no one suspected Frankfurt would one day be a global centre for information technology and telecommunication. No one dared to dream that the city's opera house and museums would be among the world's best within just a few decades. After all, the Alte Oper today a symbol of Frankfurt's cultural ascendancy was still in ruins. The thought that creating and marketing (computer) games would one day be a major contributor to the city's image and wealth would have been considered absurd. And the first customers to buy watches from Sinn Spezialuhren would never have thought that the company at the time an insider tip for divers and pilots would one day carry the name of Frankfurt all the way to Japan and Australia. In contrast to the city of Frankfurt, whose success has been largely dependent upon the development and innovative use of new technologies, Sinn Spezialuhren has remained true to traditional, mechanical watches. But like its home city, Sinn Spezialuhren has eschewed expensive marketing measures and glamour, preferring to rely consistently on good quality, innovative ideas and outstanding design. Particularly under the leadership of the company's new owner, Lothar Schmidt, the company has never ceased expanding its range of products. Lothar Schmidt recognized that wearing a mechanical wristwatch remains a symbol of individuality and an expression of personality for successful businessmen. Sinn Spezialuhren began taking on trainees, thereby helping to ensure that the art of watchmaking could survive in the digital age. Sinn Spezialuhren remained loyal to the city of Frankfurt. The company demonstrated its commitment to Frankfurt by introducing the Frankfurt Financial District Watch and once again with a special model honouring the Eintracht Frankfurt football club. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main as it commemorates its 50th anniversary, and wish the company every success in the future. Petra Roth Oberbrgermeisterin (Lord Mayor) of the city of Frankfurt am Main

The human dimension in the digital age

In a modern process called "algo trading," the world's leading stock markets use sophisticated algorithms to determine within a fraction of a second which stocks and derivatives to buy or sell. Financial deals, computer games and developments in the automotive sector are taking place around the clock, all over the world. In the digital age, many business processes have transcended the human dimension. With the introduction of its Frankfurt Financial District Watch, Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main have, as it were, put the human touch back on the wrists of the banking community. Thus it is no surprise that the former chairman of the board of the German Stock Exchange Deutsche Brse AG personally presided over the introduction of this watch to the general public. The 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main marks a half century of developing watches that fulfil people's specific requirements. Traditional, high-quality mechanical timepieces that combine technical innovation with modern design are, and always have been, the company's guarantee for success, particularly under the leadership of the firm's current owner Lothar Schmidt. All of this makes Sinn Spezialuhren a characteristic Frankfurt company. The strength of the financial industry, the automotive sector, IT and telecommunication and even the computer games segment has always been optimal technical quality and reliability combined with the kind of innovation that sets new global standards. These are the trademarks of the Frankfurt/Rhine/Main metropolitan region. And like the aforementioned business sectors and indeed the city itself Sinn Spezialuhren eschews flashy marketing campaigns and ostentatious appearances. By creating new jobs and trainee positions, and by resisting the temptation to move away from Frankfurt am Main, Sinn Spezialuhren has established itself as an important, integral and distinctive member of the city's business community. And for this, the former municipal director of economic development is grateful. Under the leadership of Mr. Schmidt, the name Frankfurt found its way into the display cases of jewellery shops in places like Tokyo and Melbourne earning thanks and special recognition from the region's international marketing manager. Congratulations and best wishes for success in the next 50 years! Dr. Hartmut Schwesinger Managing Director FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region

50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main 19612011

A former World War II pilot and flight trainer, Helmut Sinn founded the company "Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren" in Frankfurt am Main in 1961. The company in keeping with its founder's biography originally focused on the production of navigational clocks and pilot chronographs that were manufactured in Switzerland but sold under the SINN label. The company's philosophy was shaped by three basic principles: The goal was to make the best possible watches at the lowest possible price. The watches themselves should combine optimal functionality and readability with high quality. And third, to ensure the best value for the money, Sinn Spezialuhren would rely exclusively on direct marketing and forgo extensive advertising campaigns. In the following decades the company earned a reputation as an insider's tip thanks in part to excellent reports in the trade press (for example in the year 1990) and word-of-mouth publicity. Over the years Sinn Spezialuhren produced a series of classic pilot's watches. Some of these watches are still in the company's catalogue to this day and enjoy an outstanding reputation among connoisseurs of watches. This is because the subsequent owner of the company, the engineer Lothar Schmidt, has continually enhanced the technological aspects of these watches, for example the 103. When Lothar Schmidt acquired Helmut Sinn GmbH on 1 September 1994, the company employed three watchmakers. The acquisition amounted to the founding of a new company a fact that was demonstrated in the name change to "Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH". The company's founder: Helmut Sinn The company's founder was born in 1916 in the city of Metz in the Alsace-Lorraine region, and grew up in the Palatinate region of Germany. As a young man he became interested in aeroplanes and took flying lessons. He earned his pilot's license around the time that the Second World War began. In the following years he became a flight instructor for blind flight and aerobatics, and gained an appreciation of precise, reliable aeronautic instruments. After the end of the war Helmut Sinn founded a wholesale watch company before dedicating his efforts to establishing the SINN brand.

1961

A classic model from the company's early days. The 103 was one of the first pilot's watches marketed by SINN.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren

For many years, advertisements for Sinn Spezialuhren were "made by hand". For example, this ad from the 1908s for the ULBU 200/3 RZ, an "electronically powered laboratory clock for displaying, monitoring and measuring time." The mock-ups were taped together on a sheet of paper, then photocopied one thousand times, as indicated by a hand-written note on the top edge of the first page.

One of the company's first advertisements appeared in "auto mobil sport", a magazine published specially for "sporty drivers". Helmut Sinn personally announced that he "provides all kinds of specialist watches for automobile racing" and promised they "may be paid for in installments".

1963

The address of the company headquarters according to the advertisement: Rdelheimer Parkweg.

Concise and easy to read at a glance this is one of the company's first price lists. Offerings included "industrial timers and stopwatches".

The workshop at Rdelheimer Parkweg 6. Although they seem archaic now, the cuckoo clock and the steering wheel with a watch in its centre were both on sale at the time. The items shown here are scheduled for repairs.

The company headquarters were located at Rdelheimer Parkweg 6 before moving to the current premises on "Im Fldchen" street. The big outdoor clock features the SINN logo.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren

The fully automatic quartz calendar clock on the wall of the workshop was also featured on a two-page brochure.

The cover of this four-page mini-catalogue illustrates what has always been the core competence of Sinn Spezialuhren: Pilot's watches and navigation cockpit clocks. The inside pages of the brochure, published in the 1980s, feature "classic" models from the early days of the company: the 103 A, 142 BS, 144, the cockpit stopwatches IFR/60 and IFR/12, as well as the 157, an original German armed forces chronograph and the 903 navigation chronograph. There is also a "compass clock", the 170 A. On the back cover the company positions itself as "Specialists in Swiss Chronographs".

At this point in time the company was producing navigation cockpit clocks and wristwatches in a ratio of 4:1. But in early 1980 it was having difficulty fulfiling orders. The mechanical movements for navigation cockpit clocks were no longer available. Since the company needed a replacement for this important product, it invested in the development of a cockpit clock with a quartz movement unfortunately, without success: The prototypes failed to pass tests conducted by the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement in Greding because they were unable to withstand shocks between +60 C and 35 C. Problems were also reported with regard to dust and salt spray. Sinn Spezialuhren accelerated its efforts in the area of sales and service of wristwatches.

1980

Navigation cockpit clocks sold by Sinn Spezialuhren have a wide range of applications. For example, they are used (from left) in civil aviation (Boeing 727) as well as military planes (Tornado fighter jet). They are also found in the cockpits of light aircraft like the Condor highperformance sailplane.

Sinn Spezialuhren moved its headquarters from Rdelheimer Parkweg 6 to new premises just a few steps away. The new address is Im Fldchen 5 7.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren The 140 S and142 S in outer space Another event took place that quite literally brought Sinn Spezialuhren into a whole new sphere: A SINN timepiece went into outer space. During the D-1 Spacelab mission, the German physicist and astronaut Dr. Reinhard Furrer wore a 140 S model wristwatch with a Lemania 5100 movement indeed a world premiere. It was the first time a chronograph with an automatic movement was tested under zero-gravity conditions. This was so extraordinary because up until then experts had assumed automatic wristwatches would not function properly in the absence of gravity, and that only hand-wound watches would function properly in orbit. It was believed the rotor would be unable to power the timepiece under weightless conditions. With his SINN 140 S, Reinhard Furrer proved this theory wrong and demonstrated that the arm's movements are sufficient to power the watch, and that the Earth's gravity is more a hindrance than a help.

Astronauts Reinhold Ewald and Klaus-Dietrich Flade also relied on SINN watches during the 1992 MIR mission. Klaus-Dietrich Flade sent a thank-you note and called the 142 S he wore "a reliable companion".

Of course, the space flight of the 140 S was a tremendous success for Sinn Spezialuhren. And of course the "specialist for timepieces on land, water and in the air" used this watch and the logo of the D-1 mission in its advertising. This advert supplement features the 142, the 103 B, the 156 and the 157 M.

11

A distance of 4.6 million kilometres It was Reinhard Furrer's first space flight; he served as the ship's payload specialist. The ship lifted off from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at 17:00:00 UTC on 30 October 1985 and landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California at 17:44:51 UTC on 6 November 1985. The watch travelled a distance of 4.6 million kilometres, orbiting the earth at an altitude of 383 kilometres. This story has another interesting detail: While other companies give away their watches to astronauts, Reinhard Furrer bought his own 140 S. Sinn Spezialuhren had no idea where the watch would end up. After returning to earth, Furrer contacted the company to report what he had learned.

A classic will always be a classic. The 142 the Furrer watch is still on offer today, but the new space chronograph has been improved upon. Shown here is the 142 St II with a cowhide strap integrated in the case. Originally there were two models of this watch (140 and 142) with identical cases but different finishes and various display and movement variants. Later the two model series would be consolidated under the series number 142.

Practical proof of functionality: Automatic watches work well even in zero-gravity conditions. The arm's movements are sufficient to keep the automatic watch wound, as Reinhard Furrer proved during the D-1 Spacelab mission in 1985. The 140 S can be seen on his wrist.

An astronaut and his equipment. Overalls, ball-point pen and the140 S, a pilot's chronograph with an automatic Lemania 5100 movement, an interior rotating bezel that can be adjusted externally, a central minute hand, central sweep second hand, small second hand (stoppable) and 12-hour chrono-counter. The case is matte black and electroplated.

12

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren After the successful completion of the D-1 mission, the astronaut and the company remained in contact, as evidenced by the correspondence between Reinhard Furrer and Helmut Sinn. The subject of the letter on the left is some slides Reinhard Furrer made available for advertising purposes. In the letter on the right, he expresses his gratitude for some watch maintenance and confirms once again that the 140 S actually flew to outer space.

1987

Sinn Spezialuhren has a sense of humour. The postmark on this letter dated 2 January 1989 features a cartoon on the subject of "pilot's watches".

1989

The September/October edition of "Uhren Magazin" raised public awareness of the company. The cover featured a SINN watch. The headline promised to reveal "why SINN watches are so exclusive". On its inside pages the magazine printed a 15-page article about the company and its watches. For Sinn Spezialuhren, the publication of this article was seen as confirmation that the company had done a good job over the past 30 years and of course it did wonders for the company's reputation.

1990

On the cover: The 140 watch.

13

In 1993 the groundwork was laid for a cooperative effort between Bruno Belamich, who would later become the top designer for Bell & Ross, and Sinn Spezialuhren; the cooperation came to fruition in 1994 , when SINN watches selected by Bruno Belamich were marketed in France, the USA and other countries as "Bell & Ross by SINN". It was a lucrative deal for both parties: The coveted watches helped Bruno Belamich establish himself as an independent designer, and Sinn Spezialuhren increased its profile on foreign markets. The cooperation continued until the end of 2001.

1993

"Bell & Ross by SINN" appeared on the face of the watches. The former cooperation between the two companies explains why watches with these words still command high prices at collectors' markets.

On board the Columbia Once again, the 142 model played a role in a space mission. On the second German Spacelab mission, the D-2, the space chronograph accompanied the crew during their 10 days in space. The watch flew 6.7 million kilometres and orbited the earth 160 times on board the American space shuttle Columbia. Meanwhile the range of Sinn Spezialuhren watches continued to grow. The company's core business shifted to mechanical chronographs; the quartz chronograph 180 was an exception to this rule.

Confirmation in writing: This certificate confirms that the "SINN Space Watch" was on board the Columbia from 26 April to 6 May 1993.

At the age of 78, Helmut Sinn went into retirement and sold the company to Lothar Schmidt. In terms of technology and innovation, a new era began for Sinn Spezialuhren. An engineer by training, Schmidt had a reputation in the watch industry as an experienced and creative connoisseur of chronographs.

1994

The current owner: Lothar Schmidt, Dipl.-Ing. (equiv. MSc) A native of Neunkirchen in the German state of Saarland, Lothar Schmidt trained as an instrument mechanic before earning a degree in mechanical engineering. He subsequently completed a second course of study as a time and motion engineer. After serving two years in the military, he began his career as a construction engineer with a Swiss engineering company before switching to the watch industry. In February 1981 Lothar Schmidt was employed by IWC in Schaffhausen, Switzerland first as a free-lancer and later as authorized signatory where he was responsible for the establishment and operation of case and bracelet/strap production including design and development. Later he was also responsible for the establishment and operation of the parts production facility. From 1990 until he left IWC in 1993 he was also in charge of setting up the production and logistics operations of the re-organized A. Lange und Shne GmbH, at the time a subsidiary of IWC. In preparation for taking over the leadership of Sinn Spezialuhren, Schmidt was employed by Helmut Sinn GmbH from September 1993 to August 1994. After assuming leadership on 1 September 1994, Lothar Schmidt completely reorganized the company to prepare it for a successful future.

An order placed with the ETY Company in 1994. Helmut Sinn and Lothar Schmidt ordered by handwritten fax 210 "Masse Oscillante for the 7750 movement".

16

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren A new era begins The decision to take over Sinn Spezialuhren was carefully considered. The company was technology-oriented and offered the potential to realize original ideas, but it was at a crossroads in its development. In 1994 the company was much smaller than it is today and so were its premises. It occupied just one and a half stories of the building on "Im Fldchen" street, employed no more than three watchmakers in the service department, and was still buying its timepieces from external manufacturers. The measures Lothar Schmidt initiated to lay the groundwork for the company's successful future amounted to the establishment of a whole new company. He expanded the range of offerings and set new impulses by introducing patented technologies to enhance the robustness of the timepieces and make them more suitable for everyday use considerable quality improvements. The very first Sinn Spezialuhren in-house watches featured a technological innovation that remains one of the company's highest priorities to this day: Magnetic Field Protection. For this reason, one of the first watches produced entirely by SINN was the 244, made of titanium with Magnetic Field Protection and a freely osciallating suspended movement. With a diameter of just 34 millimetres, this model was the first SINN watch developed in-house.

The 244 was the first watch developed by Lothar Schmidt at Sinn Spezialuhren and featured Magnetic Field Protection.

Products must speak for themselves In-house development became the company's new standard. Lothar Schmidt was not content to market a brand of watches produced elsewhere. He wanted to realize his own ideas. The new models in the 103 series retained the familiar design but employed a number of technological innovations. Lothar Schmidt also expanded the in-house engraving department, moving it to larger premises and hiring additional employees. And there were changes to the sales structure as well: In addition to direct sales, Lothar Schmidt began establishing a dense network of "depots", selected watchmaking shops that offered models from the SINN collection. Thanks to the new technologies and innovations introduced by Lothar Schmidt, the general public gradually began to perceive SINN as a "technology brand" not least because the face the brand presented to the world was shaped by the technology-oriented, businesslike, discreet personality of the company's owner. The style of the new catalogues became characteristic of Sinn Spezialuhren. They reflected the philosophy of the company's owner: "Products must speak for themselves."

Hand-crafted to the utmost perfection an engraved pocket watch with a venerable Laco precision movement.

17

Sinn Spezialuhren took another important step in the area of in-house development in the year 1995, when the company offered its first gold watch. The case was extraordinary in that in spite of a high proportion of 22 carat gold (917/1000) it had the same hardness as stainless steel (220HV).

1995

The opening of the first depot In the area of sales, Lothar Schmidt's plan to establish "depots" took concrete form. This distribution channel premiered in the city of Mnster, where the OedingErdel jewellery shop opened the first official SINN depot. Watches were sold to customers at direct-sale prices. The distribution watch proved a success, and today there are some 75 selected depots in Germany, enabling watch aficionados to purchase their SINN watches conveniently from local shops.
The 2200 gold chronograph, as shown in the 1995 catalogue.

Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and special oil Lothar Schmidt continued to strengthen his company's technological competence. Ar-Dehumidifying Technology was introduced for the first time in the diving chronograph 203 Ti Ar. The new technology ensured enhanced freedom from fogging and slowed down the aging process of the lubricant inside the watch, thereby extending the functional life of the movement. The guarantee for these watches was extended to three years. Another technology introduced at the same time also enhanced the robustness and suitability for everyday use of all new SINN watches: the SINN special oil known as 66-228, which provides effective, long-lasting lubrication.

18

1996

Absolute freedom from fogging, pressure resistance at every accessible diving depth and 100% readability under water at any angle these are the unbeatable benefits ensured by the new HYDRO Technology and volume-compensating back. The first model equipped with this technology was the 403 HYDRO, which served as the basis for the subsequent official service watch of the German GSG 9 (Grenzschutzgruppe) Maritime Unit .

One of the first diving watches to employ HYDRO Technology was the 403 HYDRO. This timepiece was developed in collaboration with the maritime units of the GSG 9 and served as the basis for the UX GSG 9. The airborne unit of the GSG 9, on the other hand, has always relied on the "outer space" chronograph, the 142 Ti.

SINN and the "Watch of the Year" poll A total of 5,644 votes were cast in the poll for the "Watch of the Year" carried out by the trade publication "Armbanduhren". Readers were asked to choose from 271 nominated watches. Sinn Spezialuhren took fourth place with the 203 Ti Ar. The watch industry was replete with praise for the "high-tech showpiece" about which "hardly anything had been written" in the trade press. The 244 model took seventh place in the poll. SINN thus achieved two positive rankings an outstanding accomplishment given the fact that the company was still an "insider's tip" and had invested relatively little money in advertising. Founding of S & S Uhrenmanufaktur watch manufacturing The watchmaking factory S & S Uhrenmaufactur was founded in 1996 in Schweina, Thuringia. Led by managing director Claus Schmit, the company assembles and adjusts SINN watches exclusively.

Fourth place for the SINN chronograph 203 Ti Ar in the polling for "Watch of the Year". It came in just 24 points behind the thirdplace winner.

19

Known as a maker of special timepieces, SINN once again proved its competence with the development of two extraordinary mission timers known as the EZM 1 and EZM 2. These timepieces were designed for use in missions by special police forces and

1997

the GSG 9, where precise timing can mean the difference between life and death. The mission timers focus on the absolute essentials: optimal readability and perfect measurement of time. In the following years, additional mission timers were developed for special, professional user profiles.

The EZM 1, developed for a special police force, and the EZM 2, in use by the maritime unit of the GSG 9, showing the characteristic placement of the controls on the left-hand side.

Lothar Schmidt perfected the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology in combination with SINN special oil. The result is a lubrication and tolerance zone technology that ensures the functionality of mechanical watches at temperatures ranging from 45C up to +80C. This technology passed the fire test or more accurately, the "ice test" under extreme conditions. The 303 KRISTALL chronograph was used in the world's most demanding dogsled race, the Yukon Quest, in arctic Canada and Alaska, where temperatures of 40C are nothing unusual. Five dogsled mushers wore the watches outside of their protective clothing and none reported problems.

1998

And they're off in the most demanding dogsled race in the world. The 1600-kilometer-long Yukon Quest is a unique international race from Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada) to Fairbanks, Alaska (USA).

"Goldene Unruh" award for the 103 Ti Ar When you make outstanding watches, you win awards. In the year 1998 Sinn Spezialuhren received a highly coveted prize. The 103 Ti Ar pilot's chronograph was awarded the "Goldene Unruh"

for the first time. The trade publication "Uhren Magazin" carries out this readers' poll to determine "the best watches in the world". In the following years "Focus Online" and "Focus" were added as cooperative partners in the polling.

A true classic among the Sinn Spezialuhren watches. In 1998 the 103 Ti Ar pilot's chronograph received the "Goldene Unruh" award.

21

What the 303 KRISTALL can do, the 203 ARKTIS can do too: The diving watch passed with flying colours an endurance test under extreme conditions when diver Mario M. Weidner wore it while diving in the Arctic Ocean.

1999

SUG founded in Glashtte A number of other 1999 events were favourable for the company. Of special strategic importance was the founding of SUG (Schsische Uhrentechnologie Glashtte, GmbH). The company produces technologically sophisticated watchcases for Sinn Spezialuhren. For Lothar Schmidt, the founding of SUG was a matter close to his heart in two respects. It gave him an opportunity to play an active role in the economic development of former East Germany, and enabled him to remain true to his philosophy of manufacturing high-quality components for his timepieces in Germany wherever possible.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren Presentation of the Frankfurt Financial District Watch The introduction of the Frankfurt Financial District Watch represented a true milestone in the company's history. This watch was the first in an entire series of models that would be developed in the following years, and that now includes eight different timepieces. Thanks to the successful combination of sophisticated design and suitability for everyday use, it has become the favourite watch of many SINN owners even far beyond the Frankfurt city limits. For the first time, the words "Frankfurt am Main" appeared on the face of a SINN watch. It was also the first SINN watch to display three time zones. The engraving of the characteristic silhouette of the skyline of Germany's leading banking centre that appears on the rotor enhances the chronograph's value. The Frankfurt Financial District Watch was also a milestone for the company's product line. With this timepiece, Lothar Schmidt expanded the company's product range to include a "luxury segment" watch as opposed to a specialized chronograph for use by pilots and divers although it too is uncompromising in terms of robustness. Strategically, this was the right thing to do, as it opened up a whole new market of potential buyers for SINN watches. Of course, a special event was held to introduce the watch to the general public. The Frankfurt Financial District Watch was the first SINN timepiece to be presented at a public ceremony. The event was held at the Archaeological Museum in Frankfurt am Main and was attended by many prominent members of Frankfurt's banking and stock market community.

2 September 1999 at the Archaeological Museum in Frankfurt am Main: Sinn Spezialuhren introduces the Frankfurt Financial District Watch. Among those attending the ceremony (l to r): Dipl.-Ing. Lothar Schmidt (managing director of Sinn Spezialuhren), Dr. Hartmut Schwesinger (then managing director of Frankfurt Business Development GmbH), Ernst Welteke (then president of the German Central Bank) with his son and Dr. Werner G. Seifert (front row, then chairman of the board of the German Stock Exchange Deutsche Brse AG). In 2001 the watch placed second in polling for the "Goldene Unruh" award.

A cause for celebration: Sinn Spezialuhren celebrates its 40th anniversary. A special catalogue was created to commemorate the occasion. With this publication, a significant advertising medium for Sinn Spezialuhren, Lothar Schmidt once again chose an unconventional path. For the first time, the catalogue was published in the form that has since become familiar to SINN

customers: a high-quality, hardcover book with sewn binding and a bookmark. The idea was that a catalogue of this quality would most likely find an esteemed place on readers' shelves, since it would thrill the hearts of aficionados of fine timepieces. The 1000-piece limited edition of the watch created to commemorate the company's 40th anniversary, the 356 Jubilee model, sold out within just a few months.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren Development of DIAPAL Technology In 2001 Lothar Schmidt succeeded in developing a pioneering new technology known as DIAPAL Technology. It involved replacing ruby paletts with diamond pallets, hence the name DIAPAL. The procedure features a special combination of materials that requires nearly no lubrication (!) because it creates virtually no friction, thereby ensuring long-term precision of the movement,

particularly of the Swiss lever escapement. The 6000 Jubilee model of the Frankfurt Financial District Watch, an 18-carat, white gold watch made of a palladium alloy produced in a 40-timepiece limited edition, was the first serial-production watch to employ the new technology. Customers honoured the company's performance by awarding this watch the "Goldene Unruh" award for the third time in a row.

The Magnetic Field Protection developed in 1994 was further optimized. At the same time, TEGIMENT Technology was introduced for the first time in the 756 Duochronograph. The stainless steel case hardened using this new procedure provides highly effective protection against scratching. And it does so without a special coating the surface of the stainless steel itself is hardened using a special method. With a Vickers hardness of more than 1200, the surface is at least as hard as zirconium dioxide ceramics. Because Sinn Spezialuhren designs its watches for actual use under extreme conditions, this technology is an extremely practical innovation.
The 756 Duochronograph is the first watch equipped with TEGIMENT Technology.

For the "most demanding adventure in the world", the "Fulda Challenge", Sinn Spezialuhren developed the 958 model, a limited-edition chronograph with a stay-set indicator. The Fulda Challenge, sponsored by the tyre manufacturer Fulda, has been held in the icy regions of Northern Canada since 2001. The Yukon Territory serves as the backdrop for an extreme-sports contest under the harshest climatic conditions. At arctic

temperatures, several teams compete in what has been called a "polar decathlon". Over their protective clothing the participants in the 2004 edition of the event wore the 958 wristwatch, specially developed to withstand the extreme conditions and equipped with a number of useful functions. Over a total distance of 2500 kilometres, the contestants battled the bitter cold of Northern Canada and Alaska enduring extreme snow and temperatures well below zero.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren The SINN 958 at the 24-hour race at the Nrburgring's "Green Hell" It is 4 p.m. on June 12. A 24-hour race begins in the Eifel region of Germany on the Nrburgring racetrack known as the "Green Hell". Hans-Joachim "Strietzel" Stuck, piloting a BMW M3 GTR, wears a 958 model wristwatch with the serial number 2 throughout the race. It is his own 958! Strietzel Stuck, legendary Formula One pilot and long-distance driver (his titles include Sports Car World Champion, and winner of the Le Mans race) shares the cockpit with Jrg and Dirk Mller. Flashback: Lothar Schmidt and Mr. Stuck had met for the first time at the "Fulda Challenge", where Mr. Stuck also first met our former chief of operations and company secretary Arno Gabel. While chatting with one another at the press conference held to introduce the Fulda Challenge chronograph, Strietzel Stuck and Arno Gabel made a deal that would prove to be momentous: If Stuck were to win the 24-hour race in

2004, he would give his 958, Number 2, back to SINN! No sooner said than done. Strietzel Stuck, always one of the most popular drivers on the "Nordschleife" of the Nrburgring, drove to victory in his usual way, with confidence and poise. And he didn't forget the promise he had made. In November 2004 he returned his watch. We have been taking good care of this very special 958 ever since. But that's not the end of the story: SINN insisted on making him a new 958, serial number 42, in return. And why the number 42, you might ask? That was Stuck's starting number in the race. Thus the story comes full circle. Since then Strietzel Stuck and Arno Gabel remained in contact, and are friends to this day. Hans-Joachim Stuck still wears his watch and not only when racing (he now drives an Audi R8 LMS on the race track). From time to time he pays a visit to SINN's headquarters in Frankfurt. Oh, and one other thing: The next generation of the racing dynasty also wears SINN watches preferably the 956.

This year saw the creation of the first watches made of submarine steel. With this innovation SINN was able to make diving watches that are even better suited to meet the needs of divers. Lothar Schmidt did it by making the cases of the U1, U2 and UX models from genuine submarine steel. This is the same seawater resistant and anti-magnetic steel used to make the outer

2005

hull of German submarines series 212. And Lothar Schmidt even went a step further. He commissioned the Germanischer Lloyd (the safety standards authority for shipping) in Hamburg to certify the pressure resistance of his diving watches. That way users can be sure that the claims made by Sinn Spezialuhren are actually true, and not just a clever sales pitch.

Certification from Germanischer Lloyd confirming that the U1, the diving watch made of submarine steel, has been tested and proven capable of withstanding pressure up to 100 bar.

The first "Timepiece Ball" (Uhrengala) was held for all SINN employees and the owners of SINN depots. The festive gala was held to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the company's founding. And there was more cause for celebration: In polling for the "Goldene Unruh" award, readers elevated the white-gold Frankfurt Financial District Watch to first place in the category for watches up to 10,000 euros. The 956 Classic watch took second place for the second year in a row.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren SINN watches withstand crash test The 756 and 900 models were put to a particularly demanding test of their robustness at the DEKRA Technology Center at the Lausitz Eurospeedway in Klettwitz, Germany. Normally the centre performs rigorous materials tests for the international automotive industry. This time, a 756 Duochronograph and a 900 Multifunctional Chronograph were strapped to the arm of a crash test dummy and put to the high-impact test. Both watches survived the ordeal undamaged. Certification of compliance with European diving equipment standards When it comes to the unassailable documentation of the performance quality of SINN diving watches, Sinn Spezialuhren achieved something no other company in the watch industry had ever achieved. It subjected its diving watches to the same testing procedures performed on diving equipment. Germanischer Lloyd Hamburg officially certified the watches' compliance with the European Diving Equipment Standards EN250 and EN14143. In the meantime, this proof of quality has been obtained for the U1, U2, UX, U200, U1000 and EZM 3 models as well. Development of the SZ04 Another in-house development attracted wide attention: The SZ04 movement, a redesign of the ETA 6498 pocket watch calibre into a movement with regulateur display. The reconstruction was part of the 6100 REGULATEUR model series. The limited-edition 6100 Jubilee watch made of rose gold sold out in just five days.

The 6100 REGULATEUR model in rose gold won the "Goldene Unruh" award 2008 and 2010.

For the tenth time, the trade publication "Uhren-Magazin" and "Focus Online" present the "Goldene Unruh" awards. Sinn Spezialuhren took home three awards: Third place in the category for watches up to 5000 euros for the 757 UTC Duochronograph, first place in the category for watches up to 10,000 euros for the REGULATEUR 6100 in rose gold, and third place in the category for watches up to 15,000 euros for the 2300 skeletonized gold chronograph model.

19612011: 50th anniversary of Sinn Spezialuhren The U2 in the icy wilderness One famous German adventurer, polar explorer and journalist never goes out in the cold without his SINN watch. Arved Fuchs always takes along his U2 diving watch on his expeditions in ice and snow. He prepares his trips carefully, and that goes for each piece of equipment he carries with him. Arved Fuchs says of his SINN mission timer, "On my expeditions I can't be preoccupied with my watch. I don't need a piece of jewellery, I need a useful piece of equipment. A watch that works above water and under water and in icy conditions, that I can rely on one hundred percent." SINN watches underwent testing on a simulated rough road track. Strapped to the steering wheel of a test chassis at Fraunhofer LBF (research institute) new full vehicle test rig in Darmstadt, the models 757 DIAPAL, 900 PILOT, U1000, Frankfurt Financial District Watch 6000 and 917 were subjected to extreme shocks and vibration. The findings after two hard-core test runs, one lasting 30 minutes and one 13 hours: No irregularities in the performance of the movement, all systems go!

2010

Most successful brand in polling for the "Goldene Unruh" One of the watches tested, the 900 PILOT, also took top honours in a renowned poll. It won first place in the "Goldene Unruh" award for watches costing up to 2500 euros. SINN watches were honoured in two other categories, with the REGULATEUR 6100 in rose gold also winning first place in the category for watches up to 10,000 euros. A special version of the Frankfurt Financial District Watch in platinum a special edition limited to 10 timepieces finished a close second in the category for watches up to 25,000 euros. Just five votes separated it from the first-place winner. Thanks to these outstanding results, Sinn Spezialuhren was by far the most successful brand in the 2010 polling.

The REGULATEUR 6100 in rose gold also won a "Goldene Unruh" award in the category for watches up to 10,000 euros. This was the second time (after 2008) this watch won the coveted title.

The 900 PILOT won the 2010 "Goldene Unruh" in the category for watches up to 2500 euros.

A Jubilee model took second place in the category for watches up to 25,000 euros: The 6000 Platinum, produced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Frankfurt Financial District Watches.

Robust and suitable for everyday use SINN Technologies Overview

Throughout our company's history, but especially since Lothar Schmidt restructured Sinn Spezialuhren back in 1994, we have developed a wide range of technical innovations. These have been based above all on the demands placed on our watches by our customers as they go about their daily lives. Despite being so different in nature, all of these developments have the same goal that of helping to make our watches even more robust and reliable, even more hardwearing in daily use. On the following pages you will find further information on our technologies and on Schsische Uhrentechnologie Glashtte (SUG) which manufactures our technologically superior cases.

Details of selected SINN technologies

HYDRO

Absolutely free from fogging, pressure-resistant at any accessible diving depth and perfect readability from any angle under water these are the unbeatable advantages of our diving watches equipped with HYDRO Technology. How does it work? The movement, dial and hands are immersed directly in a crystal-clear bath of oil. The watch is thus free from fogging, as there is no air inside the case. The principle behind this technology is simple, but its implementation requires some complex steps with meticulous attention to detail. A HYDRO watch is filled completely with a special oil, i.e. the movement, dial and hands are immersed directly in a crystal-clear bath of oil. That's why every HYDRO watch must also be a quartz watch. The oscillation of the balance in a mechanical watch cannot overcome the friction of a liquid medium. There are convincing advantages to this type of construction: the watch is absolutely free of fogging, because there is no air inside the case. Oil is non-compressible, so the internal pressure of the watch constantly adjusts to the external pressure by means of tiny movements of the membrane back. Thus the HYDRO watch is pressure-resistant at any accessible diving depth. The crystal and back are not exposed to any compressive stress even at the greatest depths.

The UX diving watch under water: with oil filling on the left and without it on the right (for comparative demonstration purposes).

A further advantage is that the refractive index of our HYDRO oil matches that of sapphire crystal glass, so no light is refracted at the interface between the oil and the sapphire crystal. As a result, a HYDRO watch can be read at any angle under water. For the UX, SINN selected a chronometer quartz movement with thermal compensation made by the Swiss manufacturer ETA. This movement is accurate to within 0.05 seconds per day, so the watch will run at most 20 seconds slow or fast over the course of a year.

Temperaturresistenztechnologie
Temperature Resistance Technology

The long-term accuracy of a watch movement crucially depends on the lubrication of its moving parts this is particularly true at extreme temperatures. We use the special oil developed by SINN to ensure reliable function under even the most extreme conditions. With its outstanding properties, it provides lubrication that is highly resistant to aging at temperatures between 45 C and +80 C. The higher the temperature, the lower the viscosity of the lubricating oil film. At low temperatures, the oil becomes more viscous, leading to increased friction throughout the movement; more energy is lost in the train wheel, the escapement and the complete balance. Consequently, the amplitude of the oscillation decreases and the watch becomes increasingly inaccurate. In conjunction with the aging of the oil, which likewise increases the viscosity of the oil, conventional watch oils can thicken enough that the watch stops at temperatures just below the freezing point. Such watches no longer function reliably when used at lower temperatures! Only the special oil with substantially lower viscosity developed by SINN for use in extreme temperatures provides reliable long-term lubrication at very low temperatures. The composition of the oil ensures that it is still sufficiently fluid at temperatures of 45 C and below to maintain the movement's proper mechanical function. Moreover, the viscosity of the oil at +80 C does not change enough to cause the oil to run off the ruby pallets of the escapement. Our SINN special oil is highly resistant to aging, and provides lubrication for use under extreme conditions.

Ar u -Trockenhaltetechnik
Ar u -Dehumidifying Technology
Ar-Dehumidifying Technology solves a basic problem of mechanical watches: the aging of oils due to moisture in the air contained inside, or diffusing into, the watch. The movement is mounted in a nearly anhydrous atmosphere thanks to the three Ar-Dehumidifying Technology elements of drying capsule, EDR seals and protective gas filling. Aging processes and fogging of the crystal from sudden cold are prevented, and reliable functioning and accuracy are ensured. Why does a water-resistant watch need dehumidifying technology anyway? The beauty and fascination of owning a SINN watch are enhanced by the knowledge of the fine mechanical precision of this object of daily use. Nonetheless, no matter how accurately the individual components are made, friction and wear must be minimized so that they function durably. Thus high-quality synthetic oils are used to ensure optimal lubrication of the movement bearings. This remains an unavoidable process in all mechanical watches. Humidity, however, accelerates the aging of the oils. How does moisture get into the watch? Water is always present in the atmosphere in gaseous form, which is why it can penetrate the seal systems of a watch case. Temperature changes then cause microcondensation, permitting water to collect in liquid form on exposed parts of the movement. The consequences: The efficiency of the lubrication deteriorates. Electrochemical corrosion, wear and friction increase, reducing the amplitude of the balance. The watch runs with decreasing accuracy and must finally be reconditioned. Our engineers looked for solutions to this problem and found them in the form of Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. Three technical elements The Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is based on three technical elements: a drying capsule, EDR seals and a protective gas filling. The primary element: the drying capsule The drying capsule is the most important part of the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.

The Ar-symbol on the dial indicates models with Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.

The colour scale for the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology: the capsule continues to absorb moisture until the darkest colouration is reached.

36

The capsule is filled with copper sulfate; this absorbs moisture from the air inside the case and binds it permanently. Copper sulfate turns increasingly blue as its water content rises; the shade serves as an indicator of the drying capsule's level of saturation (see diagram). The capsule features a small viewing window of sapphire crystal glass for this purpose. EDR seals To minimize the exchange of gas between atmospheric air and that inside the case, and thus the penetration of atmospheric moisture, we only use Extreme Diffusion-Reducing (EDR) seals in watches featuring Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. These seals reduce the infiltration of moisture in the case to as little as 25% of the value permitted by conventional case seals made of nitrile rubber (NBR). Superior protective gas filling The Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is completed by a superior protective gas filling. This creates an ideal climate for the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology

to function in. Only moisture diffusing from the air now has to be bound in the drying capsule. This avoids the humidity which is otherwise locked in during conventional assembly. Mounted in a nearly anhydrous environment These painstaking and technically elaborate measures are intended to keep the movement in a protective environment which is almost completely dry (anhydrous). A positive consequence of this is that it slows the aging process of the oil, thereby extending the functional life of the movement. Also, fogging of the crystal due to sudden temperature shocks (such as immersion in cold water) can be prevented, ensuring that the watch remains clearly legible at all times. Three-year warranty Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is a truly pioneering achievement for mechanical wristwatches by our engineers and a decisive advancement for all aficionados of mechanical watches. A three-year warranty is offered on all watches featuring Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.

Unobtrusively integrated in the case: the colouration of the drying capsule with its inspection glass indicates the amount of moisture absorbed. The movement remains dry.

The drying capsule, like the push-piece and crown, is securely sealed with EDR seals. On the right: copper sulfate (CuSO4) binds moisture and changes colour from white to blue.

DIAPAL
The objective of the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is to prevent the oil from aging. The idea behind the DIAPAL Technology goes one step further. In this case we select special pairs of materials that work together without lubrication (!) and without causing friction, ensuring long-term accuracy of the movement and particularly of the Swiss lever escapement.

To counteract the aging processes of the oil in the watch, the movement is maintained in a dry environment filled with protective gas using our Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. The technicians, engineers and physicists at SINN are currently focusing on an even more efficient solution to this problem. Their idea: if oil isn't used, there won't be any difficulties with aging oil. The approach based on this idea focuses on the Swiss lever escapement. The reason for this is the special role this part of the movement plays with regard to the aging of the oil. Empirically, the lever escapement is the most sensitive component of the movement with regard to accuracy, i.e. the quality of the lubrication at this point has the largest impact on the accuracy of the entire movement.

757 DIAPAL with nanotechnology.

In the beginning was the diamond: today we celebrate the triumphs of nanotechnology SINN began its research on the DIAPAL Technology in 1995 with the idea of using diamond pallets to replace ruby ones. For conventional escapements, oil is required only to reduce friction between the ruby (pallet stone) and the steel (escape wheel). In the Swiss lever escapement, a polished diamond surface proved to be a better friction partner than the ruby traditionally used for this purpose. Lubrication is no longer required for lasting accuracy and function. However, this combination still failed to produce acceptable oscillation amplitudes without lubrication. Thus, in 1995 SINN began testing numerous other material combinations for use in watch technology, and applied for the first patents in 2000.

TEGIMENT
TEGIMENT

und die schwarze Hartstoffbeschichtung and the Black Hard Coating

The stainless steel case hardened using TEGIMENT Technology provides extremely effective protection from scratches on the case surface. To achieve this, we do not apply any coatings of foreign materials; rather, the surface of the stainless steel itself is hardened in a special process. In turn, the Black Hard Coating is applied to the U1000 S model, for example, by physical vapor deposition (PVD). This high-quality, Black Hard Coating is achieved only in combination with TEGIMENT Technology.

Scratch-resistant like the TEGIMENT layer: the Black Hard Coating on the U1000 S (EZM 6).

TEGIMENT Technology To keep the cases of our watches in the best possible condition when they are worn, SINN uses the TEGIMENT Technology for several models. A TEGIMENT case has a surface hardness of approximately 1200 Vickers. This value corresponds roughly to the hardness of commonly used zirconium oxide ceramics. By comparison, an unhardened stainless steel case has a hardness of approximately 220 Vickers. To understand the durability of this technology properly, you must know that a TEGIMENT layer is not a coating of foreign material. Rather, the surface of the stainless steel itself is hardened using a special process. With this technology, SINN effectively protects the surface of the watch case from scratches.

Black Hard Coating TEGIMENT cases have a special feature which immediately gave the SINN engineers a new idea. The hardness profile of the TEGIMENT layer is continuous, i.e. the high hardness of 1200 Vickers transitions very gradually to the basic hardness of the stainless steel. This makes it possible to apply a PVD-coloured coating on a hardened case without having to fear the familiar peeling of the coloured coat from the body of the case. The TEGIMENT, on the other hand, has a hardness comparable to that of the PVD coating and merges continuously with the basic hardness of the case. This prevents the "eggshell" effect and dramatically reduces wear. For this reason, SINN uses PVD coatings only on TEGIMENT cases. This combination is the only way to achieve highquality colouring of a steel case by PVD.

Magnetfeldschutz
Magnetic Field Protection
Magnetic fields such as those of electric motors, loudspeakers or door closers cause the Nivarox balance spring to become magnetized and adversely affect the accuracy of the watch. We solve this problem by using a protective sheath consisting of a closed, magnetically soft inner case that includes the dial, the movement holding ring and the case back. This Magnetic Field Protection far exceeds the DIN specification for anti-magnetic watches and minimizes magnetic interference. Interference of the accuracy of the watch due to magnetic fields As early as the 1930s, watches used for special purposes were protected against magnetic fields. Later, Magnetic Field Protection was integrated in pilots' watches due to the magnetic deflectors used in the radar screens found in airplane cockpits and ground stations. However, the restriction of Magnetic Field Protection to professionally used chronometers is proving absolute in today's world. While the earth's magnetic field is far too weak to pose any risk, magnetic fields from electric motors, loudspeakers, door closers or other such sources can cause lasting interference with the function of a mechanical watch. SINN-study about magnetized watches In a study of 1000 watches by SINN's customer service department, nearly 60% of the watches received were magnetized, and half of these (30%) had severe defects caused by magnetic fields. During this study, the speed of the movement before and after demagnetization was documented. If the speed deviation before demagnetization was greater than 5% of the speed after demagnetization, a defect due to magnetic fields was assumed. Magnetic field influences were also found even when the wearers weren't aware of any contact with sources of magnetic fields. As a consequence, all watches received by our customer service workshop are first demagnetized using an electromagnet.

The chart shows the shielding influence of the magnetically soft sheath. Without Magnetic Field Protection, nothing prevents the magnetic field from affecting the movement of the watch. The SINN Magnetic Field Protection reduces the strength of the magnetic field in the interior of the case to a fraction of the external value (red curve).

40

The main source of deffect The primary source of error for magnetic interference with the rate of the movement is a magnetized Nivarox balance spring, i.e. the timing component of the watch. The Nivarox balance spring is made of a magnetizable material for the purpose of thermal compensation. When it comes to magnetic field sensitivity, the modern balance spring is far superior to the older steel springs with regard to sensitivity to magnetic fields, because Nivarox springs are non-magnetic as required by DIN 8309. However, in the case of a relatively low magnetic field exposure of 4,800 A/m or 6 mT roughly one quarter of the pole strength of a common house-hold magnet this permits an accuracy error of 30 seconds per day. Compliance with chronometer standards is thus impossible. If the spring is exposed to stronger magnetic fields, the oscillation of the balance will change permanently.

Protection from magnetic fields Magnetic fields can be diverted using magnetizable materials. If you place a hollow body made of iron in a magnetic field, you will see that a large part of the magnetic flux lines are bundled in the wall of the hollow body. The interior space is thus shielded from magnetic forces to a large extent. SINN engineers use this principle to their advantage. It is important that after exposure to a magnetic field the protective sheath does not remain magnetized, as it would become a source of interference. Materials that can be easily magnetized but have only low remanence (residual magnetization after exposure to a magnetic field) are referred to as "magnetically soft". Pure iron is a good example of this. With the help of magnetically soft materials, the watches bearing our Magnetic Field Protection symbol are protected from magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m and 100 mT. At SINN we use a closed, magnetically soft case interior consisting of the dial, the movement holding ring and the case back to achieve this protection. This type of shielding far exceeds the DIN specification for anti-magnetic watches. The DIN specification for anti-magnetic watches requires protection only up to 4,800 A/m.

Unverlierbarer Sicherheitsdrehring
Captive Safety Bezel
According to the DIN specification, the bezel of a diving watch may only be turned counter-clockwise and should ratchet in increments of one minute. The construction of the rotating bezel is an extremely sensitive safety topic. To preclude risks to the life and health of the diver, our U1000 series employs a safety solution based on two elements. One is the secure attachment of the rotating bezel, which differs greatly from the conventional snap-in mechanism: thanks to our design, the bezel remains in place, even upon impact. And a mechanism in the U1000 series provides additional protection against accidental misadjustment. Thanks to this comprehensive safety system, divers can be confident they are in fact safe and protected. In addition, the precise ratcheting with its unmistakable clicks in increments of one minute is an audible expression of quality.

Diver's bezel The rotating diver's bezel is firmly attached to the toothed ring with four screws and thus cannot be lost. Toothed ring The toothed ring has upper and lower toothing and is seated in the case band. The upper rectangular toothing prevents the diver's bezel from shifting inadvertently. The lower saw toothing together with the spring ring ensures that the bezel can be turned in only one direction. Spring ring The lower saw toothing of the toothed ring slips over the springs of the spring ring when turned counter-clockwise. Clockwise rotation is blocked by these springs. Toothing of the center section of the case The toothed ring is secured by the interlocking of the upper toothing and the cogs on the case band.

42

Secure attachment of the rotating Bezel The rotating bezel of the U1000 series cannot be lost. That means that it does not become detached when something hits it or it gets stuck somewhere. To achieve this secure attachment, the diver's safety bezel is screwed to the underlying toothed ring using four screws. In addition, the case band is surrounded by toothing which interlocks with the toothed ring and thus secures the attachment to the case. All of our rotating bezels are secured against loss; in other diving and pilots' watches a similar technical principle is used.

Unintentional misadjustment impossible In addition to preventing loss of the ring, this secure attachment mechanism protects against misadjustment in both directions, e.g. when the watch bumps into other objects. In order to turn the bezel of the U1000, you must press it down gently with your fingers. Under this pressure, the upper cogs on the toothed ring disengage from the case band, and the bezel can be rotated. The lower saw toothing of the ring produces the characteristic full clicking sound of the ratcheting mechanism. Inadvertent misadjustment of the rotating bezel by contact with a finger or impact is impossible. The rotating movement is made possible by the saw toothing on the underside of the toothed ring gliding over the springs of the spring ring. This design permits only counter-clockwise movement of the bezel. When you let go, the spring ring generates the required upward pressure to secure the bezel in the toothing of the case and to protect it against accidental misadjustment.

"An ongoing creative challenge"

SUG manufactures technologically sophisticated cases for pilot's and diving watches
Toward the end of the tour of the German Horological Museum in Glashtte, visitors find themselves in a brightly lit room containing a handful of glass cases in which the local clock and watchmakers display their wares. Descriptions point out the special features of each artefact in the exhibit. While perusing the items on display, visitors sometimes do a doubletake one of the companies being showcased doesn't produce elegant, finished watches, but technologically sophisticated cases instead. That company is Saxon Watch Technology (Schsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH, SUG) in Glashtte, a company that has earned its place among the historical manufacturers presented at the museum. Exemplary cooperation between East and West What factors led to the founding of SUG? Having worked for other clockmakers in Glashtte (see the story in the sidebar), Ronald Boldt was also familiar with the suppliers of watch cases. He observed two things: The market was relatively small and manageable, and there was room for improvement in terms of production quality. Why not do it himself, he thought. He set up the company with two partners, one of whom was Lothar Schmidt. And as is so often the case in life, there was a confluence of two fortunate circumstances: Ronald Boldt was looking for business partners to help establish a new company, and Lothar Schmidt was looking for a new supplier of high-quality watch cases for SINN, the company he had acquired in 1994. The two men had met before in the tight-knit horological community of Glashtte, so it didn't take long before they started discussing their plans. Thus the cornerstone was laid. When a disastrous flood destroyed the company's premises in 2002, Lothar Schmidt acquired the shares of the third partner, which further intensified the cooperative relationship between Ronald Boldt and Lothar Schmidt. Today, after more than ten years, Ronald Boldt calls the business connection "an ideal example of East-West cooperation" and praises the alliance as one that was and remains a "labour of love" close to the hearts of the two men. After all, they are both engineers, and speak the same language. They get along well, both professionally and personally.

Nothing escapes his critical gaze: Dr.-Ing. Ronald Boldt checking a case. The 3D shop drawing, specially designed for use by the production department, can be seen in the background. This drawing constitutes the first step in the process of producing a SINN watch case.

44

Flexible, start-to-finish manufacturing on a small scale So it's no wonder that since the founding of SUG, the company has supplied SINN with watch cases. The little company in Saxony has grown to become a leading manufacturer. In terms of finding and implementing the best solutions, SUG's quality and production processes are on a technological par with those of the best manufacturers in the business anywhere in Europe! This is evidenced by the list of renowned watchmakers that entrust their production secrets to SUG and commission the company to manufacture watch cases for them. SUG's success is a monument to the outstanding expertise the company has accrued over the years, and to its proven ability to come up with unique solutions, again and again. Another advantage of the company is its ability to provide extremely flexible, start-to-finish manufacturing of small production runs in premium quality, including design, CNC machining, finishing and assembly. The result is a finished watch case assembled completely to the desired specifications. Being able to perform tasks other manufacturers would balk at requires not A job for goldsmiths and toolmakers In other words, there's nothing his employees can't make. And SINN cases are known for a number of typical characteristics. They comprise individual components such as push-pieces, crowns, bezels, seals, backs, screws and springs, and are threedimensional objects made of stainless steel, titanium, gold or in the case of SINN diver's watches submarine steel. That requires uniquely developed tools and technologies, not only for the manufacturing process. Watch cases are characterized by the need to meet both aesthetic and technological demands. Ronald Boldt describes it aptly: "Making a watch case requires you to be both a goldsmith and a toolmaker." The first step of this symbiosis of artisans involves creating a production-ready, photorealistic design in three dimensions on the basis of the specifications. After fine-tuning and approving the design, Ronald Boldt prepares the set of drawings for the individual components and the tools that will be used to complete the second step in the production

only experience, but also creativity and passion all of which are in ample supply at SUG. The company has succeeded in optimizing production processes for even the most demanding watch case constructions. "That's hard for other companies to top," says Ronald Boldt with pride.

Machining a watch case using a state-of-the-art CNC machine.

process. Ronald Boldt puts it like this: "This is valuecreation in the truest sense of the word. You take a workpiece a rod, disk or circular blank and lathe and mill it to create the finished components." The subsequent third step involves what he calls "artistic handiwork" the finishing process, i.e. grinding and polishing the surface of the case. "The results must be outstanding, because if they are not outstanding, they are rejected," he says in reference to the extremely high standards of quality that leave no room for compromise. Finally, the individual components are assembled to create the final product. Subsequently the completed cases are tested for pressure and water resistance and sent to SINN. The next step toward creating a high-quality special watch is carried out in Frankfurt am Main. It involves not only assembling and installing the movement, dial, hands and strap/bracelet, but above all integrating the SINN technologies.

45

SINN cases as a creative challenge Because each SINN case is given an individual number for reasons of quality assurance, it can be considered a unique specimen that ultimately must be water resistant and must protect the sensitive interior workings against dust and impact. But there is an additional element involved, according to Ronald Boldt, that "consistently presents a creative challenge." The reason behind this is the fact that SUG manufactures the cases for the pilot's and diver's watches SINN has developed for use by professionals. They feature such technologies as HYDRO, special oil, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, DIAPAL, TEGIMENT and Magnetic Field Protection as well as extras like captive bezels and high-pressure resistance. And all of these technical features that are so characteristic

of SINN watches place enormous requirements on the construction and manufacturing of the cases. There are no standard solutions to these difficult tasks. That means the SUG staff must constantly be on the lookout for new ways of doing things. "This is an area where SINN Spezialuhren lives up to its name these are truly 'special watches,'" says Ronald Boldt. For example, the U2 diving watch: What other manufacturer is called upon to make a watch case out of submarine steel, a material that is scarcely ever used for watches? And the case must be capable of integrating Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and special oil, and it must fulfil the stringent testing requirements of Germanischer Lloyd in terms of pressure resistance, temperature resistance and functionality.

What makes a watch a "special watch" With SINN watches it's particularly important for the case to fulfil these technical demands. In addition to housing and protecting the movement, the case also has to ensure the smooth operation of the watch's various technological features. And yet another factor comes into play: The implementation of the ideas behind the technologies takes place in two important steps, namely the engineering design at the drafting table and the actual production on the CNC machine. In other words, it's the cases made by SUG, in collaboration with the SINN development engineers, that make SINN watches "special watches." As Ronald Boldt explains, "Many of the technologies in SINN watches are made possible by the special construction of the watch case." Magnetic Field Protection, for example, requires the use of special materials developed to ensure the special characteristics required by the case. Of course, he's not revealing what those traits are.

Maximum precision is called for when press-fitting the sapphire crystal glass.

46

From an idea to serial-production readiness The development of the D3 system is a good example of the process that leads from the initial concept by SINN engineers to final mass production of the case by SUG. The name D3 comes from "Direkt Doppel Dichtend", the German words for "direct double sealing." This horological innovation creates a seamless seal by inserting the push-piece pins and crown shafts directly in a specially finished drill hole in the case. This ensures reliable protection against lateral impact and prevents dust or moisture from entering the case. "The D3 system is a simple and effective sealing method that is both reliable and easy to assemble and repair. It provides a better seal because it has fewer transition points between the interior and the exterior. But actually realizing and implementing this solution was a real challenge in terms of design and production," Boldt explained. SINN watches display the distinctive wordmark He knows that although SUG makes first-class products, the company's name is unfamiliar to many watch lovers and connoisseurs. That may be because they aren't interested in knowing who manufactured their watch case. It may because the case doesn't bear the distinctive three-letter wordmark. But SINN watches do feature the three letters SUG a symbol of high-quality between the case lugs. Does he regret that the SUG brand often takes a back seat to that of the watch itself? No problem, says Ronald Boldt. "In my opinion the most important thing is that industry experts know who we are. The experts are familiar with our work, they trust us and respect us, and know we can handle virtually any task involved in manufacturing top-rate watch cases." So it's only fitting that SUG is featured in a display case at the German Horological Museum in Glashtte, where visitors learn what the company stands for technologically sophisticated watch cases and first-class precision engineering from one of Germany's most famous and respected watchmaking regions.

The individual parts are put together to form a complete case during final assembly; shown here is the EZM 7 Mission Timer for the fire brigade.

Dr.-Ing. Ronald Bodt, born in 1947, completed vocational training in mechanical engineering in Leipzig before earning a degree (Dipl-Ing.) in precision engineering at the Technical University in Dresden. From 1977 to 1989 he worked as a design engineer for special machinery at VEB Glashtter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). Beginning in 1990 he served as the company's head design engineer and authorized signatory for the technology division, and was also responsible for technology and quality assurance. Under his leadership the East German company made the transition from large-scale production to flexible manufacturing of small parts. He was also heavily involved in developing the first high-quality mechanical caliber (automatic movement 1-10-30) produced by the company after a long hiatus. He co-founded SUG in December of 1999 together with Lothar Schmidt, Dipl-Ing. (equiv. MSc), the owner of Sinn Spezialuhren. His title as of 1 April 1999 is co-owner and managing director. Under his leadership the company has grown from a three-man operation to one of Europe's most renowned manufacturers of watch cases with a staff of currently 32 employees.

Set of dashboard clocks

When Sinn Spezialuhren was founded in 1961, cockpit instruments and the precision they must maintain even under extreme conditions played a special role. They inspired Helmut Sinn, the company's founder and a pilot himself, to create his first aviation chronographs. But these on-board instruments are indispensable not only on airplanes and yachts. Fans of classic car rallies also rely on precision timepieces that are just as stylish as they are functional. These events require adherence to specified times in addition to excellent orientation and the perfect control of the vehicle. Now you and your team can select a combination of navigation instruments for the next rally or tour. For example, the dashboard clock, precise to the second, with a removable bezel. And up to two chronographs, with such features as a tachymeter scale, ascending or descending numerals, and flyback function. Perfect for setting target times and completing time trials successfully. These instruments can be securely fastened to the dashboard with the help of mounting plates made of satin-finished titanium. They can be removed easily by pressing on the bayonet joint (no chance for thieves!) and replaced as needed. And during the off-season, when there are no rallies to be run, the set of dashboard clocks looks good on your desk, for example. The elegant wooden display block pictured on the cover is available separately. Case and baseplate made of titanium Secure fastening with bayonet joint Sapphire crystal glass Flyback function on chronograph Water-resistant and pressure resistant to 10 bar Ar-Dehumidyfing Technology enhances functional reliability and freedom from fogging Low pressure resistant (for use in airplanes) Functionally reliable at temperatures from 20 C up to +60 C Rotating bezel with exchangeable inserts Enhanced resistance to shock and vibration

Individually configurable

Fully functional even under extreme conditions These clocks and chronographs are water-resistant. But even with water-resistant instruments, the air enclosed in the case contains water in a gaseous state. And air can also penetrate the seals. When the water vapor in the case condenses into liquid, the instruments are impossible to read. To prevent this from happening, SINN has developed Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. The combination of a special drying capsule, EDR seals (extreme diffusion reduction) and a filling of protective gas guarantee that these instruments remain free from fogging, even in difficult weather conditions. Another benefit: With its outstanding qualities, SINN special oil ensures the functional reliability of these instruments at temperatures ranging from 20C up to +60C.
The unused drying capsule it turns blue upon absorbing water.

Three exchangeable bezel inserts are available These dashboard instruments can be equipped with a count-up or count-down bezel as desired. The tachymeter bezel for the chronograph makes it possible to measure average speeds. You can select the bezel you want for your dashboard clock and order additional ones as needed. They can be exchanged easily.

Thanks to the flyback function you are perfectly equipped to drive a defined route within a specified time a challenge for both the driver and navigator. The dashboard chronograph with flyback function allows the chronograph to be tripped while in use. With the exchangeable bezel it is possible to set precise targets and read them off at a glance.

Bayonet joint protects against theft Simply press and turn the clock to remove it from the baseplate and store it in the leather pouch provided. The clock can be reattached just as easily and is once again ready for use, thanks to the convenient bayonet joint.

Diving Watches and Mission Timers.

SINN was the first company to manufacture diving watches that complied with European diving equipment standards, and the first to test and certify them for pressure resistance, water-resistance and enhanced freedom from fogging. The technical development of diving watches is one of the greatest challenges for engineers and watchmakers, because these timepieces must be absolutely waterresistant, perfectly readable in all lighting and water conditions and extremely durable. Our watches are the ideal mission timers.

Series 203 Diving Chronograph with Temperature Resistance Technology.

The 203 ARKTIS chronograph is our first diving watch to feature antifreeze technology. This means that it is guaranteed to run and function reliably even at exceptionally low temperatures. This watch passed its Arctic endurance test on the wrist of extreme diver Mario M. Weidner with flying colours! The 203 ARKTIS survived not only all the dives in the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, but also sessions in the sauna on-board the research vessel. However, the true test of the watch's quality lay in coping with the extreme temperature fluctuations between those found in the water (freezing point) and those on land (up to 25 C) which represents a real challenge for a watch worn outside a thermal diving suit. Perfect coordination is called for the moment an emergency call is received by the fire brigade control centre. Regardless of whether a residential building is on fire, dangerous chemicals have escaped or there has been an accident involving a hazardous goods transporter the fire brigade and rescue service teams are on the scene immediately. All the rescue coordinators now need a clear overview of where they are in the rescue schedule. SINN Spezialuhren provides a mission timer with bezel to time all the key operation times at the turn of a ring: the EZM 7 (Einsatzzeitmesser = Mission Timer).

A fire-fighter weighed down with heavy equipment and breathing apparatus, feeling his way through an unfamiliar building while confronted with smoke and flammable gases, needs to concentrate 100% on the task at hand: getting people out of harm's way, extinguishing the fire and preventing the spread of dangerous substances. Fire-fighters are very often tested to their physical limits. Which makes it all the more important for the rescue coordinators to know exactly how long the individual teams have been in the building and which The Mission Timer 7 developed for the fire brigade. Every single action counts during a fire

brigade call-out. When compressed air breathing apparatus is used, operations need to be carefully timed by the operation chiefs to ensure their teams' safety. times should not be exceeded. There are strict breathing protection monitoring regulations. Each additional minute in the rescue zone can put lives at risk. Because the teams are at their physical limits when they pull back out.

With the professional support of Chief Fire Inspector Toms Stanke we have developed a mission timer designed to make reading all the main operation times stipulated in the German fire service manuals (Feuerwehr-Dienstvorschrift) FwDV 7 and FwDV 500 as simple as possible. Featuring a clear set of safety symbols and the precision for which our specialist watches have long been renowned. From the maker of genuine pilot's watches and certified diving watches made from top quality German submarine steel: in situations where your own safety can depend on the reliability of your mechanical watch, the EZM 7 passes the acid test every time. Featuring innovative technologies which help ensure impressive levels of accuracy and reliability Every single action counts during a fire brigade call-out. even under the most severe When compressed air breathing apparatus is used, operations need to be carefully timed conditions. by the operation chiefs to ensure their teams' safety.

102

The key operation times at-a-glance.

The increasing risks faced by fire brigades in recent years have given rise to enhanced technologies and resulted in stricter regulations. Physiological limits and the times stipulated in Service Manual FwDV 7 and FwDV 500 issued by the German fire service are used as the basis for the following maximum operation times: Using CSA (protective suit): Using PA (compressed air): Using LPA (closed circuit): 20 min. 30 min. 60 min.

The schematic representation of the main time phases for breathing protection and NBC rescue operations permits times to be read off at a glance.

Checks should be made at 1/3 and 2/3 of the maximum operation time. The thirds are marked by points at 10, 20 and 40 on the bezel. FwDV 500 states that the following times should not be exceeded for NBC operations: Standard decontamination (Decon level II) must be available for use after 15 minutes.

Green for Dekon II Green/yellow for CSA

Yellow for PA Red for LPA

Black circles marking the first and second thirds of the maximum PA/LPA operation time.

The colour-coded bezel of the EZM 7 corresponds to the pictogram on the dial, allowing the wearer to set and read off the key operation times in no time.

Colour-coded bezel for breathing protection and NBC rescue operations We enlisted the services of Chief Fire Inspector Toms Stanke to help us design the colour-coded bezel and the pictogram on the dial. The scales are based on the traffic light colours green, yellow and red and help to provide a clear overview of the total durations in the first hour of the rescue, the so-called "chaos phase". They also show colour-coded rescue times for operations involving protection suits, CSA, PA, Dekon II and LPA. The zero point of the bezel is set to the minute hand (zero position) at the start of the rescue time to be measured. It can now immediately apparent when a team needs to be relieved, e.g. after 20 minutes in a protective suit CSA (green/yellow), after 30 minutes using PA (yellow) and after max. 60 minutes using LPA (red). Clear overview: the control points at 10, 20 and 40 minutes for the thirds checks for PA and LPA operations. In NBC rescue operations, the time when Dekon II is operational can be also be read off the green scale.

Germanischer Lloyd Certifies SINN Diving Watches

So what does Germanischer Lloyd have to do with a watch manufacturer from Frankfurt am Main? The renowned company tests and certifies our diving watches according to a variety of criteria: One test focuses on water-resistance and pressure resistance, while a second test procedure covers something never done before in the watchmaking industry: certification in accordance with the European standards for diving equipment!

The background: time plays a crucial role in survival on every dive. Diving watches must therefore be water-resistant, reliable and durable, and guarantee perfect readability in all lighting and water conditions. The information we provide about our diving watches is thus not merely captured in words, but proven in practice as well. Testing for water-resistance and pressure resistance Since 2005 Germanischer Lloyd has been testing our diving watches for water-resistance and pressure resistance.

In accordance with these certification standards, the U1 and the U1000 series are pressure resistant to 100 bar, while the U2 and U200 series are pressure resistant to 200 bar and the UX series is actually pressure resistant to any accessible diving depth. For this series, Germanischer Lloyd has confirmed the pressure resistance of the case to 12,000 meters and of the movement to 5,000 meters diving depth. The tests are repeated at regular intervals on all of these watches in order to document the consistency of the quality.

124

Two U1 models as well as a case are lowered into the pressure chamber.

Documentation issued by Germanischer Lloyd certifying the models U1, U2, UX and EZM 3 according to the European standards for diving devices EN 250 and EN 14143.

Premiere: certification for compliance with European diving equipment standards In a standardized test situation, will a diving watch deliver the same reliable performance as, say, a breathing apparatus? To answer this question, we were the first who have watches tested and officially certified according to the European standards for diving equipment. Also these tests are accomplished at regular intervals for all these watches. The testing and certification according to the European standards EN250 and EN14143 was completely new territory for both sides. This was the case because the standards for diving equipment cannot be applied to watches without modification. The experts at Germanischer Lloyd thus adapted the standards appropriately and defined two series of tests. In the first of the two, they put the timepieces in a test cabinet for three hours at 20 C, then for three more hours at +50 C. The timepieces were subsequently checked for accuracy and functional reliability at both temperatures. In a second test the watches had to withstand three hours at 30 C and 3 hours at +70 C with 95% humidity.

The result: Temperature resistance and perfect functioning were documented and certified for the watches in the U1, U1000 (since 2007), U2, U200 (since 2009) and EZM 3 series after both tests. The UX series watches were also certified, however these were subjected to a modified test involving temperatures between 20 C and +60 C due to their battery operation and oil filling.
The safety standards authority for shipping. Germanischer Lloyd, based in Hamburg, is responsible for the technical safety of more than 5,700 oceangoing vessels. Its guidelines constitute a safety standard accepted worldwide for maritime shipping. Founded in 1867 In the 19th century, those who entrusted their goods to a ship or sailed on board as a crew member or passenger had to play it safe. Shipping magnates and merchants didn't want to rely only on the good reputation of the shipbuilder or captain. After all, the technical quality of a ship was crucial even then. In 1867 various shipping company owners took the initiative and formed a committee to advise on issues of ship classifications. Today, Germanischer Lloyd is one of the market leaders worldwide in the area of ship classification.

SINN watches on rough-road simulation track

How do SINN watches react to jolts and vibrations? We wanted a clear answer to this question. And so we fastened them to the steering wheel of a test chassis in the new full vehicle test rig at the Fraunhofer LBF (research institute). What followed were exacting tests and positive results. Vibrations and possible consequences for mechanical watches When putting their high-speed vehicles through their paces, motor sport professionals feel naked without a watch on their wrist even though this subjects the timepiece to considerable stress. If the track is uneven and bumpy, all the jolting and shaking is transmitted automatically from the steering wheel to the watch. Severe shocks and vibrations can have serious consequences for a mechanical movement: the balance spring can become deformed. the impact resistance spring of the balance can become deformed, changing the height of the balance cock on the balance shaft. the dial feet may yield, shifting the dial off-centre and causing the hands to chafe around the centre hole. the seat of the hands can become loose; the hands would then no longer be plane-parallel and could obstruct each other. movement screws can become loose, and with them key components. The Fraunhofer-Institut fr Betriebsfestigkeit und Systemzuverlssigkeit LBF To demonstrate how our watches react to shocks, we contacted the Fraunhofer LBF in Darmstadt. They were to subject the watches to endurance tests carried out on the steering wheel of a test chassis on a simulated rough-road track. The renowned and internationally recognised institute has over 70 years of experience in conducting endurance tests. These provide the scientific basis for all safety-relevant designs such as automobile structures, aircraft wings or rolling stock. Their core competence still lies primarily in system

reliability and adaptronics. The research work of the Fraunhofer LBF feeds into the approval conditions for development work carried out by the German, European and American automotive and aircraft industries and their suppliers (visit www.lbf.fraunhofer. de for further information). For the endurance tests we deliberately chose not just rally chronographs but also classic watches such as the 6000 Frankfurt Financial District Watch. After all all SINN watches need to be robust and suitable for everyday use!

126

The new full vehicle test rig in Fraunhofer LBF in Darmstadt.

Five SINN watches on the steering wheel, padded with plastic rings. These simulated the damping action which is intuitively produced by a driver's hand. Rally chronographs and classic watches were deliberately chosen for the tests.

Tests on simulated rough-road track The planned tests on the full vehicle test rig at the Fraunhofer LBF in Darmstadt were a first: it is normally cars which are subjected to rigorous tests here under the watchful eye of Dipl.-Ing. Marc Wallmichrath. The watches 757 DIAPAL, 900 PILOT, U1000, 6000 Frankfurt Financial District Watch and the 917 GR were fastened to the steering wheel of the test chassis for the endurance tests. Drivers' hands intuitively compensate any jolts, and so the watches were mounted on plastic rings to simulate this damping action. Five watches on the test chassis steering wheel The first endurance test got under way. How well would the five SINN watches perform? They were facing an extreme endurance test, after all. The test chassis was gradually subjected to ever stronger movements, shaken by powerful jolts and vibrations as if driving along a road full of pot-holes. The steering wheel with the watches had been secured with belts beforehand, as there was no driver in the test vehicle. As a consequence of the simulated jolts, the steering wheel made small but

violent movements to the right and left, punctuated by short, relatively motionless phases. The test was designed so that any acceleration to the wrist could be measured, too. Test passed - everything in order After two rough test runs for 30 minutes and 13 hours (equivalent to 300 km) respectively all eyes turned to the unerring electronic timing machine. This indicated how well the watches had passed the unusual test by taking measurements and making comparisons. "During their 13 hours on the test rig, the watches have experienced 300 km under the most severe rough-road conditions an ordeal which no test driver could be expected to endure," said Dipl.-Ing. Marc Wallmichrath. Would the watches' accuracy be compromised, for instance? No, in both tests, the watches performed admirably test passed with flying colours. Read the report on the next page for more detailed results. Videos of the test can be viewed at www.sinn.de/en/endurance-test-watches.htm

127

The final check was carried out after the endurance test using an unerring timing machine. The SINN watches passed the extreme impact and vibration tests in the test vehicle with flying colours.

The results in detail 30 minutes into the test, none of the five watches showed any deviation from the time set using the radio-controlled clock prior to starting, or any functional disorders not even in the hand components. The electronic timing machine revealed only slight changes to the accuracy. After 13 hours on the test rig representing 300 km on a hard rough-road surface four of the five watches showed slight deviations to the original time which had been set from a radio-controlled clock. The deviations were between +1 and 3 seconds. No other effects were detected in the movement.

Summary Despite the enormous stress levels to which our watches were subjected, they all passed both tests with flying colours. This proved their robustness and suitability for everyday use even when exposed to severe vibration and jolts. As we see, SINN watches are very difficult to shock!
The test conducted by the Fraunhofer LBF (research institute) in Darmstadt demonstrates impressively just how perfectly SINN watches function even when subjected to extreme conditions. You can always rely on mechanical watches especially those protected by innovative SINN technologies. Nevertheless, all types of stress leave their mark and so your should keep it to a minimum by ensuring that you never expose your watch to unnecessary wear and tear.

Aerobatic pilot relies on SINN watches

RALF NIEBERGALL
With his aircraft, a Siai Marchetti SF-260, Ralf Niebergall arouses nostalgic memories among the spectators at air shows. But when it comes to modern time measurement on the ground and in the air, the aerobatic pilot from Neuwied relies exclusively on watches made by Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main.

Ralf Niebergall relies on his Duochronograph 757 UTC.

This is not a coincidence. After all, safety is the most important thing in aerobatics. The family has owned the plane since 1980. Built in 1967, this "Ferrari of the skies" is a true classic aeroplane, in which Ralf Niebergall completed his pilot's training. He got his pilot's license in 1987. Since then he has put 1,400 hours of flying time under his belt, over 600 of them in aerobatics. He became familiar with the SINN brand while serving in the army. A hobby has turned into nine successful years of collaboration with the company. "With regard to SINN, I'm a true believer. The company manufactures pilots' watches that withstand enormous stresses and are absolutely reliable. Which is vitally important to me as a pilot", he explains. What sounds like a platitude has a concrete background. Airplanes like the

Marchetti have the shortcoming that their fuel tank indicators do not always function accurately. In order to calculate the fuel quantity and flight time, Niebergall used to rely on the Pilot's Chronograph 103 and the Navigation Cockpit Chronograph NaBo 54. More recently, this task has been accomplished with the aid of the Duochronograph 757 UTC. "I know that these watches will never let me down. No other brand can compare to a SINN watch", says Ralf Niebergall of the indestructible functionality of the watches.

The U2 in the realm of eternal ice

ARVED FUCHS

Arved Fuchs is the most famous adventurer in Germany. At least, this is how the native of SchleswigHolstein (state of Germany) is frequently described in the media. This is all the more surprising because two elements of the statement are not quite correct. Indisputably, Arved Fuchs is well-known. However, this is an understatement to say the least, as the resident of Bad Bramstedt has a firm place in the history of the world's polar explorers. Furthermore, the professional designation he considers appropriate sounds considerably more prosaic. He sees himself as an expedition leader who gives lectures and works as a writer, journalist and film-maker. he explored Greenland by dogsled; and he rounded Cape Horn in a collapsible boat in the winter of 1984. In 1993 he sailed through the Northwest Passage within one year without an icebreaker. His boat, the "Dagmar Aaen", a shark cutter restored in 1988, was the first sailboat to circumnavigate all of North and South America without an icebreaker. In 2000 he retraced the legendary Shackleton expedition in a historically accurate replica of Arved Fuchs: Polar explorer, expedition leader, journalist and film-maker. the "James Caird" lifeboat, sailed For more than thirty years he has led expeditions to through the famous Northeast Passage on his the most remote corners of the globe frequently fourth attempt in 2002, and crossed the Northwest under extreme conditions. For example, in 1977 Passage for the second time between 2003 and there was the two-month trip up the De Pas 2004. In 2006 he traveled around Ellesmere Island, and George Rivers in the Canadian province of the tenth largest island in the world, by dogsled Quebec in traditional Indian canoes. That was and on skis. All this is impressive enough. But in followed by numerous other journeys. In 1981 1989 he made history: in temperatures as low he crossed the Atlantic in a sailboat; in 1983 as 52 C, his eight-member expedition team

struggled across 1000 kilometers in 56 days to the North Pole. In the same year he reached the South Pole with Reinhold Messner as well. He was thus the first German to reach both poles and the first person to do it on skis. Thirty years of cracking glaciers, glittering icebergs, inhuman cold. It seems that Arved Fuchs can't tear himself away from the eternal ice. Whether with sled dogs, on skis, on foot or by boat, for him it's always a "journey to the kingdom of the senses", as he explained in an interview. "In the silence there you can truly hear nature, hear the wind, your sense of

smell is intensified, you see things differently and more intensely. For me it's an incredibly beautiful landscape." At the same time these expeditions are the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Even as a small boy, he was spellbound by the fascinating stories of famous polar explorers and learned the legends of the North. "Our family read a lot, and the bookshelves were full of books and reports on Nansen, James Cook, Magellan and many others.

131

I found it absolutely fascinating. I also loved outdoor sports such as hiking, riding, sailing and skiing, and foreign cultures and new situations were always exciting." He began organizing his first expeditions during his training as a seaman in the merchant marine. He abandoned his studies in marine engineering to fulfill his dream of becoming an expedition leader.

is not success at any price. He is convinced that no expedition is worth a human life. His undertakings are always precisely planned down to the tiniest detail. What's important is to achieve control of the calculable risks precisely because unforeseeable risks are always present.

The equipment is part of the meticulous preparation. When it comes to time measurement, this With regard to carrying out these expeditions, connoisseur of mechanical watches has relied on Arved Fuchs sees himself as a meticulous the U2 since June 2007. He particularly values the craftsman. He believes that expedition uncompromising durability of this diving watch. For management is a profession that can be learned. instance, despite everything his watch has been Fuchs is very team-oriented in his work, with a through, there are no scratches on the crystal strong sense of responsibility. To him, adventures or the case. In his opinion, the U2 is better than are creative moments in the mind. They give him watches made by other manufacturers with regard the freedom to think outside the box. His objective to suitability for everyday use. "On my expeditions I can't worry about handling a watch carefully. I don't need a piece of pretty jewelry. I need reliable equipment a watch that works perfectly under water, on land and in sub-zero temperatures, and that I can rely on one hundred percent, that gives me the exact time under any circumstances and all climatic conditions. And I have all that with the U2", says Arved Fuchs, impressed by the reliable Even under the toughest climatic conditions, Arved Fuchs swears by the reliability and mechanics.
suitability of the U2 for everyday use.

132

For Arved Fuchs, expeditions are "journeys in the kingdom of the senses" and the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

In addition to the durability of the watch, there are particular technologies he favors. For instance, the U2 has a second time zone, which becomes crucially important in regions where daylight lasts 24 hours. It's clear that precise time measurement is required for reliable navigation and the U2 plays a crucial role in this despite state-of-the-art satellite technology. "Other watches keep accurate time, too. But what distinguishes the U2 is the perfect combination of various special features and technologies." Naturally, as a seaman he is familiar with Germanischer Lloyd and its

high quality standards. He knows that SINN has its diving watches tested and certified there. This plays a major role in his decision of which watch to purchase. "This goes beyond run-of-the-mill marketing. With this certification, SINN has undertaken to document the high-performance functionality of its watches on a voluntary basis. To me that is a true sign of quality."

The U2 in use in harsh climatic conditions

TIM THOMPSON
The best stories are drawn from everyday life for instance, that of Canadian Tim Thompson. He lives in the northeastern part of Ontario in the Timmins region, where the climatic conditions are very harsh. The area is known for extreme temperature fluctuations: in summer the mercury rises up to 40 C, dropping down to 50 C in winter. But this story is particularly interesting because Tim Thompson has been the proud possessor of the U2 diving watch made by Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main since December 2005.

Tim Thompson proudly shows off his much-loved U2.

"Good Day Mr. Schmidt, we are a strange lot here. We are an outdoor bunch and don't usually sit inside during the winter months. Winter here can be 5 months long with snow cover sometimes exceeding that. So, we ski, snowmobile and ice-fish and once a year in Cochrane, we go polar-dipping. Except for skiing, I'm active in the above mentioned winter activities and usually like to wear my watch on the outside of my glove. The problem is that I had not encountered a watch that could operate at these temperatures and/or handle being directly exposed to these environmental conditions for extended periods. Either they would slow down, stop or fog up, or all the above. Quartz would just stop completely. The info you provided on the technical and operational aspects of your new U2 just blew me away. Could this be the watch I was looking for? I waited impatiently for a few months and then took possession of my new U2 on Dec 31, 2005. I was completely taken with the build quality and attention to detail. The whole package just screamed German engineering. I had never seen anything like it. It was so over the top, I couldn't find the words to describe

134

it. I had to make up my own word "testostoronial". It was very substantial, very foreboding, a huge chunk of metal filled with interesting innovations. Over the course of the winter, I ended up wearing it on the outside of my gloves while cleaning out the driveway in vicious storm after vicious storm. It never stopped, never fogged, never lost time. It looked like it was the real deal. I then tested it further to reassure myself that this watch would never let me down. I left it outside in 30's temps for the entire night and then brought it in and immersed it immediately in super hot water in my sink. Throughout the whole test, it never slowed, stopped or fogged. Absolutely unbelievable. It's been on my glove while ice-fishing, blowing the driveway with my snowblower and other winter activities. It's seen blizzards, rainstorms, extreme cold and summer temperatures of +38 celsius and long exposures to these temps. I have not made any arrangements to safeguard it from the dangers of daily wear. It's been everywhere I have been and seen every kind of abuse you could imagine in daily life, and my daily life is more abusive to a watch than most others. I swam with it and wore it on my wrist as I put new dock posts in, in filthy murky waters, It's seen salt from the road salt we deposit in winter to melt the ice. I have whacked it super hard when I took a serious fall on the ice. It nailed the ice, directly, at breakneck speed. I wore it while gathering maple syrup during the spring syrup season and while operating my Huskvarna chainsaw. Through all of this, there is no damage, no denting, no gouging, no scraping and no scratches,

not even scratches which could not hide from my 15X loupe. Its crystal is unblemished. The outer a/r coating is perfect. The ETA movement is still keeping to its initial +3.5 to 5 sec./day accuracy. I cannot find any imperfections with my U2 after 20 months of extreme abuse. Mr. Schmidt, I feel that you made this watch specifically for me and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your efforts and for developing the innovations which I find are not just a marketing thing but actual real and practical applications to make my watch survive what I have exposed it to. My only regret was that you did not have this available when I was mining gold underground. It would have been the only watch which could have survived 15 years in the harshest environment on earth. I would have proudly wore it to the depths if it had existed when I mined. Every scratch and scrape, a battlescar to be shown with pride."

Tim Thompson's testimonial provides impressive proof that SINN watches function perfectly even under extreme conditions. It just goes to show that mechanical watches are the most reliable especially when they enjoy the added protection provided by innovative SINN technologies. While normal signs of wear and tear are inevitable, you can keep them to a minimum by not subjecting your watch to unnecessary stress and strain. Unless of course you happen to live in Canada or another locale with a comparable climate, where exposure to extreme conditions is unavoidable.

The 757 DIAPAL proves a reliable companion in Patagonia

CHRISTIAN MOSER
"There is a place where you feel like if you were any closer to your Creator, you could shake hands." This is the poetic claim Chile uses to attract tourists to Patagonia, and it aptly describes the beauty and grandeur of the region. Patagonia is definitely off the beaten track indeed, for many it is the very epitome of remoteness and adventure. Perhaps that is why this part of the world, for which there are no fixed geographic boundaries, seems so magical and irresistible. the name "Patagonia". Because of their size, he called the native Tehuelche Indians "patagones", a reference to a giant named Patagn in a chivalrous novel popular at the time. The wild and breathtakingly beautiful region of Patagonia has become home to Christian Moser, a native of Austria who emigrated to Chile in the year 2000. Stretching 4000 kilometers along the west coast of South America, Chile has several very diverse climatic zones. Moser, who claims to have an "adventurer gene", lives in Puerto Natales. The city with 19,000 inhabitants serves as the base camp for excursions into the famous Torres del Paine National Park and for tours of Patagonia. The fact that the next closest town is 250 kilometers away gives an indication of how vast and remote this part of the world is. Moser joined the Austrian military when he was 19 and received special training as a paratrooper. One of his missions took him to Cyprus, where he served for ten months in 1990-91 as a member of the UN Rapid Reaction Force. After undergoing additional training programs including survival training, and after visiting many other countries, he came to Chile to work as a free-lance trekking and mountain guide. Of course, his passion for modern hiking and mountain climbing was instilled in his home country and honed through his military training. The decision to move to Chile was of his own volition. He had always had a fondness for South America, and the mountains, glaciers, lakes and forests of Patagonia convinced him to stay there.

Located at the southern tip of South America, Patagonia has two very different topographies. Western Patagonia, which belongs to Chile, is a mountainous area of stone and ice, with innumerable fjords and Pacific islands. The spectacular peaks of the Andes command respect as they tower in the sometimes gray, sometimes blue sky. The landscape seems surreal, bizarre, mysterious. Eastern Patagonia is larger and belongs to Argentina. "You will find nothing there. There is nothing in Patagonia.", the Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges wrote of this tranquil, largely deserted place. What Borges meant with "nothing" is the sheer vastness, the seemingly endless space, the unceasing wind. The explorer Ferdinand Magellan went ashore in Santa Cruz, as the east coast is called, in 1520, and it was he who gave the region

Patagonia A beautiful landscape where Mother Nature shows her wild side.

For nearly ten years now, Moser has been organizing and leading trekking and mountain-climbing tours for adventurous Europeans. The tours are very challenging, both physically and mentally, for their participants. Not only do they have to deal with boulders and heaps of rubble, they sometimes also have to get up in the middle of the night to go mountain climbing. There are also extreme temperature fluctuations, particularly in northern Chile, along with steady winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, paired with high-altitude sandstorms in the mountains. At elevations of more than 5500 meters, the air is thin: venturesome mountaineers have only 50 percent as much oxygen as they are normally accustomed to. "For our mountain expeditions, optimal acclimatization and the use of state-of-the-art equipment are a matter of course," Moser says on his website, www.moseractive.cl. And of course, that state-of-the-art equipment also includes his watch. His constant companion since September 2009 is the 757 DIAPAL model. Because he wears it over his sleeve, it is exposed to extreme weather conditions. A long-time fan of mechanical watches, Moser has been interested in robust timepieces he can rely on 100 percent since his days as a paratrooper. And he knows he can count on his 757 DIAPAL. His tours last several days and are organized with military precision. A reliable watch is indispensable for adhering to the strict schedule. "Because we often

have to climb mountains in the middle of the night, it's essential for me to have a watch I can read easily in the dark. So the large luminous triangle on the bezel of the 757 is very helpful to me," Moser says. And the TEGIMENT and DIAPAL Technologies have also proven themselves under the extremely difficult day-to-day conditions in Patagonia. "I'm extremely satisfied with my watch. It is perfect for tours in the wilderness, because in spite of the cold, the rocky boulders and the sand, it shows hardly any signs of wear and tear, and still runs perfectly. It's resistant to abrasions, and it's designed to be extremely functional, with no superfluous frills. And although it may look a little clunky, it feels good on my arm." Moser offers an extreme example to demonstrate that the 757 DIAPAL leaves absolutely nothing to be desired in terms of precision, functionality and freedom from fogging: "Once I left the watch out in the cold overnight. It was 25 degrees below zero, at an altitude of 4300 meters. Early the next morning I lowered on a rope into a geyser that was about 50 degrees hot. Even after this extreme temperature difference, the watch still worked. And thanks to its dehumidifying technology, it didn't even fog up." No wonder Christian Moser considers the 757 DIAPAL the best there is, thanks to its technological superiority and "quality based on years of experience."
