SPRINGFIELD 1903 AND 1903-A3

During the Spanish American War, the United States came to the
realization that the 7MM, Model 93 Mauser was superior to the .30-40
Krag Jorgensen rifle the US military was using at the time. Immediately
after the war, the US began development of a new cartridge rifle. Most
of the planning was done by members of boards that were set up at
the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, which led to the
popular name of Springfield.
Several experimental rifles were tested over a period of three years
before the final version was adopted in 1903 and designated the Model
1903 Springfield, in .30-03 cal. Unfortunately, though the rifle design
was a success, the cartridge was still no ballistic match for the 7.9
(8x57MM) Mauser. In 1906 the United States adopted a new, lighter

bullet of the pointed form, designated the Caliber .30, Model of

1906, or .30-06 for short. Springfield rifles made in .30-03 cal. were
recalled and refitted with a new barrel for the new round.
There were many variations and experimental changes made to
the basic design. The most significant change was the development
of the Model 1903 A3 action, with the A designating alternate.
This was the quick manufacturing fix to the 03 design as the war
had made it necessary to turn out large quantities of rifles in a short
period of time. A tremendous number of these rifles, in their many
configurations, are still in operation today, which attest to the success
of the design.
