W
elcome to St Ives Parish Church!
The recitation of morning and evening prayer is part of the
backbone of our community: both in the morning and in the
evening we listen to Gods Word and offer intercessions
using the order found in Common Worship: Daily Prayer; whilst the
present order is taken from Book of Common Prayer (1662).

In this booklet you will find the essential parts of the service, but you
will have to refer to the Book of Common Prayer and to the New English
Hymnal in order to join in with the psalms and the hymns appointed for
today. However, if you feel at any time that you would prefer not to sing
aloud, please do feel free to join in with our praise and petition in the
silence of your heart.

On certain days Evensong is immediately followed by Benediction of the
Most Blessed Sacrament. This is a simple service of praise and adoration
during which the Eucharistic Christ is exposed on the Altar for a period
of time and then lifted up in blessing of the people. We do believe that
Christ is both present and present to bless (Ken Leech 1980).
If you are not familiar with this liturgy, consider it as an extension of the
elevation of the Host during the celebration of the Eucharist. In adoring
this Sacrament we are caught up in Jesus own self-giving adoration of
the Father.

Finally, a collection will be taken during the final hymn. If you would
like to make a donation to the church and you are a UK tax-payer, you
are kindly asked to put your donation in a Gift-Aid envelope. By filling in
your details, you will allow St Ias to claim 25p for every Pound you
donate at no extra cost for you. Thank you!

Evensong and Benediction

Please stand as the choir and the Altar party enter the church.

After an introduction to the service from the Officiant, we remain standing for the
First Hymn.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
The Officiant addresses the congregation with the Sentences and the Invitation
to Confession.

Dearly beloved, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and
confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble
nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but
confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end
that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and
mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins
before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet
together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his
hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to
ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the
soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to
accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the
heavenly grace, saying after me;

We all kneel for the Confession bringing to mind those times in which we have
separated ourselves from God and from the Church.

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred, and
strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too
much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have
offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those
things which we ought to have done; And we have done
those things which we ought not to have done; And there is
no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess
their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According
to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our
Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That
we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To
the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

St Ives Parish Church

We remain kneeling for the Absolution and the Lords Prayer.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the
death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and
live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare
and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission
of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and
unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant
us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him,
which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be
pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE PRECES
We remain kneeling as the Officiant and the choir sing the Preces.

O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

All stand for the doxology,

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.
The Lords Name be praised.

Evensong and Benediction

PSALMODY
All sit for the Psalms appointed for the day.

At the end of each Psalm we stand for the doxology.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost :
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING AND MAGNIFICAT

All sit for the Old Testament Reading appointed for the day.

After this, all stand for the Office Hymn.

Remain standing for the Magnificat (or the Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Luke
1:46-55).
We make the sign of the Cross as this Gospel Canticle begins.

M
y soul doth magnify the Lord :
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded :
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth :
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me :
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him :
throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm :
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat :
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things :
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel :
as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Glory be to the Father, &c.
As it was in the beginning, &c.

NEW TESTAMENT READING AND NUNC DIMITTIS
All sit for the New Testament Reading.

After this, all stand for the Nunc Dimittis (or the Song of Simeon - Luke 2:29-32)

L
ord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace :
according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen :
thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared :
before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles :
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, &c.
As it was in the beginning, &c.

APOSTLES CREED
We remain standing and turn towards the High Altar for the Apostles Creed.

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth :
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost:
The holy Catholick Church;
The Communion of Saints:
The Forgiveness of sins:
The Resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.

Evensong and Benediction

RESPONSES AND COLLECTS
All kneel for the Responses and the Lords Prayer and the Collects.

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.

And grant us thy sal-va-tion.

O Lord, save the Queen.

And mercifully hear us when we call up-on thee.

Endue thy ministers with righteousness.

And make thy chosen people joy-ful.

O Lord, save thy people.

And bless thine in-he-ri-tance.
8
St Ives Parish Church
Give peace in our time, O Lord.

Because there is none other that fighteth for us *

but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us.

And take not thy holy Spirit from us.

We remain kneeling for the Collects. The Collect for the day is followed by the
Collect for Peace and the Collect for Aid against all Perils,

O God, from whom all holy desires,
all good counsels and all just works do proceed;
give unto thy servants that peace
which the world cannot give;
that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments,
and also that by thee
we being defended from the fear of our enemies
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy,
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

After this we sit as the choir sings an Anthem. On certain occasions the Anthem
is substituted by a Hymn, in which case we are invited to stand.

INTERCESSIONS
All kneel as Intercessions are offered for the needs of the whole Church and the
world.
The intercessions may end with an invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which
we say together.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
9
Evensong and Benediction

SERMON AND FINAL HYMN
All sit for the Sermon, which is preached on most occasions.

After this, or if a Sermon is not preached, we stand for the Final Hymn.
During the hymn a collection will be taken.

BLESSING
Remain standing for a Blessing, alternatively we say together the Grace.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.
Amen.

On certain days the Final Hymn is immediately followed by Benediction of the
Most Blessed Sacrament. In this case, whilst the hymn is being sung, the
servers prepare the Altar for the next part of the service.

BENEDICTION OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT

All kneel as the bell rings and the Blessed Sacrament is enthroned on the altar.
After this, we sing,

During the O Salutaris the Blessed Sacrament is incensed. A period of silence
and a short devotion follow.

After this, this response is used,

Blessed, praised, hallowed, and adored
be our Lord Jesus Christ on his throne of glory
and in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
O saving Victim, opening wide
the gate of heaven to man below;
our foes press on from every side;
thine aid supply; thy strength bestow.

All praise and thanks to thee ascend
for evermore, blest One in Three;
O grant us life that shall not end
in our true native land with thee. Amen.
O salutaris Hostia,
quae caeli pandis ostium:
bella premunt hostilia,
da robur, fer auxilium.

Uni trinoque Domino
sit sempiterna gloria,
qui vitam sine termino
nobis donet in patria.
Amen.

We remain kneeling for the Tantum Ergo and Benediction.

Thou gavest them bread from heaven [alleluia]

Containing in itself all sweet-ness. [allelu-ia]

Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ,
you gave us the Eucharist
as the memorial of your suffering and death.
May our worship of this Sacrament of your Body and Blood
help us to experience the salvation you won for us
and the peace of the Kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

We remain kneeling. As Benediction is given the Eucharistic Christ is incensed
and a bell is rung.

After this, we recite the Divine Praises, repeating each petition after the
Officiant.

Blessed be God.
Blessed be His Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
Therefore we, before him bending,
this great Sacrament revere;
types and shadows have their ending,
for the newer rite is here;
faith, our outward sense befriending,
makes the inward vision clear.

Glory let us give, and blessing
to the Father and the Son,
honour, might and praise addressing,
while eternal ages run;
ever too his love confessing,
who from both with both is one. Amen.
Tantum ergo sacramentum
veneremur cernui:
et antiquum documentum
novo cedat ritui:
praestet fides supplementum
sensuum defectui.

Genitori, genitoque
laus et jubilatio,
salus, honor, virtus quoque
sit et benedictio:
procedenti ab utroque
compar sit laudatio. Amen.
