Ababywithinamother'swombgrowsnotonlyinbodyandmindbutalsothereisfurtherdevelopmentofhissoul.ForthisreasontheancientHishisofIndiahaveadoptedspiritualizingmeasuresevenforbabieswhoareintheirembryonicstages.InSanskrit,theword
Sanskara
means"tocreateim-pressionsonthemind".Throughthesesacraments,fromtheverybeginning,goodimpressionscanbeimparted onthegrowinganddelicateminds.Fromaverysmallagechildrenarebroughtupinaproperreligiousenviron-ment.ThesecondmeaningofSanskaraistopurifyandenculture.Justasmuchasthereisalwaysaneedtokeepthebodycleanbybathing,thereisalsoalwaystheveryrealneedtokeepcleanbothmindandheart.Thereistheconstantnecessitytogetridofevilthoughtsevenas theyariseinthemind.Thesesacramentsareperpetualremindersthatweshouldprotectourselvesfromthesixenemiesthatlurkwithinus:lust,anger,greed,pride,attachment,and
ieolousy,
TherearediHerentceremon-ials,asprescribedbytheHindureligion,whichcorres-pondtodiHerentstagesofgrowthinthelifeofachild.Theseare:
Naamkaran
(namingceremony),
Annaprasan
(feedingritual),
Mundan
(head-shaving),
Upnayana
(Sac-redThread),
Vedarambha
(scripturaleducation),and others.Thesearesiqnpostsontheroadoflife.Byreadingthemanindividualcangettoknowinwhichdirectionheshouldnextproceed.Theypreventhimfromtakingthewrongroad.Inthisway,theseritualsserveasreminderstoaperson,inthevariousstagesofhislife,wherehemusttravel.andwhathisgoalis.Or,justastherearestepsleadingtoahighplace,thesesacraments comeastheydo,oneafteranother,actingasstepslead-ingtothehighplaceofspiritualfreedom(mokshc).Thusthesesixteensacramentsservetocheckevilten-dencieswhileatthesametimetheyencouragetheexpressionofthe
divine
elementwithintheindividualself.Theyteachapersonthetruelifeofspirit.
THEIDEALOFMARRIAGE
(a)Ufe'sFultilment
Amonstthesixteensacramentsthatofthemarriageisthemostimportantasitbringsaboutafar-reachingchangeinaperson'slife.Sinceapersonlivesasingle lifepriortomcrriooe.heorsheisconcernedonlywith individualdevelopment.Butwithmarriageperformedtransformationtakesplace.Apartnershipinlifeisunder-takenandtheunionofthecouple'sspiritsisachieved.Awoman'soraman'slifeissolitarybyitself.Atthe timeofsexualmaturitytheyrealisethevacuumthatisintheirunfulfilledseporctslives.Inbothofthemspecial qualiitieswhichbelongtotheirseparatenaturesbeginto showthemselves.Thatiswhytheaveragemanor womanisunabletoatlainfulfilmentbyhimselforher- self;butonlythroughmarriagecantheyachieveit.Inthiswaythequalitiestowhichawomanisheir,likelove,kindness,tenderness,aHectionandtolerancearebene-ficialtothehusbandwhilethewifeinturnreceivesthebenefitsofthequalitiesgenerallyfoundinmen.Thesearevelour,manliness,thespiritofadventure,foresighted- ness,andself-reliance.Thismutualunionofmanandwifegivessecuritytotheirchildrenandhelpstomakethefamilystable.ThatiswhytheHinduscriptureshavedesignatedwomanasthebetterhalfofman.Theygivementalaidtoachievererfectioninlife.Theyco-operotewitheachothertohelpremovecertaindefectsintheirnatures.Thisistheidealofmarriageandfulfilmentoflife.
(b)DesireforProcreation
Thesecondaiminmarriageistoseekthecontinuityofthefamilylineage.Godhasimplantedthedesireforself-propagationinalllivingthingsintheuniverse.ForthisreasontheVedas,whicharethesacredscripturesofHindusandwhicharethestandardforspiritualauthorityhaveincludedthedebttoparentswiththetwodebts-debttoGodanddebttoRishi.Manbecomesfreeofthisdebttoparentsbyprocreatinghimself.Humanbeingsnurtureanaturaldesiretohavechildrenintheirownlikeness,eitherinappearanceormentalendowment.Theaimofmarriageisthereforetosatisfythisdesireforprogeny.Whatmanhasinhimselfhewishestogivetosocietythroughhischildren.Inlikemannerhewishestofulfil throughthemthosethingshecouldnotachieveinhisownlifeforhimself.Thereforemarriagecanbeconsider-
