SAP’s intention is to combine the features GL, PC accounting,Reconciliation Ledger, Business Area & Cost of salesaccounting.
-
New GL provides several new features such as;1)Segment Reporting : you can generate financialstatements below the co.code level in accordance withinternational accounting standards.2)Cost of Sales accounting based on Functional Areadimension defined in new GL.3)Management reporting by integrating profit centers withGL.4)Parallel accounting with the concept of parallel ledgers.
5)
Balanced books: The new GL automatically adjusts posteddocuments to keep the books for all dimentions balancedat all times.6)Fast closer: Several earlier closing procedures have beenmade redundant.
7)
Extensibility: Enhancements can be made to the new GL bydefining customer specific dimensions to the GL. Customerfields cannot be posted to from SD, MM etc., other than FI.

Conventional GL has multiple application components like GLfor legal reporting, PC accounting for segmental reporting & spl. Purpose ledger for customer defined dimentions to meetfin. Reporting needs which make data reconciliation acrosscomponents hectic. New GL provides a unified structure.

Data Structure of New GL:1)BKPF/BSEG remains as in classic GL.2)Documents that are relevant for leading ledger are updatedin tables BKPF/BSEG.3)BSEG_ADD is only updated if additional ledgers are in usefor parallel reporting.4)Documents without valuation differences are posted to allledgers.5)Documents that are posted only in one or more additionalledgers are only updated in BSEG_ADD.BKPF - Document HeaderBSEEG - Document line item(no split info.)BSEG_ADD - Doc. Line item only for additional ledger(nosplit info.)FAGLFLEXA - Ledger specific line items in split formFAGLFLEXT – Split totals(Replaces totals table GLT0 of classic GL).

Activate new GL: FAGL_ACTIVATION – New GL tables areactivated, Financial Accounting New menu. Tables of classicGL (GLT0) continue to be updated by default. Allowes forreconciliation between two sets of tables duringimplementation to ensure that the new GL is workingproperly. Once validated the classic GL can be deactivated.

Ledger group appears in various transactions.

Run the programme RFAGL_SWAP_IMG_OLD_PATH to hidethe old financial accounting path.

Leading Ledger:1)Leading ledger is the principal ledger in new GL.2)Leading ledger gets many of its control parameters fromthe co.code.3)It uses Fiscal Year variant and posting period variant thatare assigned to the co.code.4)It manages the local currencies that are assigned to theco.code.

Only values from the leading ledger are posted tocontrolling in std.system.

Scenario Definition:1)A scenario defines which fields are updated in the generalledger during postings from other applications.2)SAP delivers several pre-defined scenarios. You cannotdefine your own scenario.3)Multiple scenarios can be assigned to the leading ledgersimultaneously.

When new GL is active, a accounting document always hastwo views – Entry view & General ledger view.

Entry view displays the info., as contained in sub-ledgers suchas AR,AP,AA & Taxes.

GL view displays the info., which is available in GL only.

How the profit center is mapped with in the new GL:1)Define the update of the characteristics “profit center” and “partner profit center” in the ledger by selecting thescenario “profit center update” FIN_PCA.2)Define the field “profit center” as a splitting characteristicin the document splitting.3)To create balance sheet on the profit center, set the “ZEROBALANCE” indicator.
 
4)Activate the required entry field to ensure that the profitcenter is set in all postings.

Segmental Reporting Aims:1)To give detailed insight into different business activities of a diversified company.2)IAS distinguishes between business and geographicsegments;a)A business segment represents a partial activity of the company that delivers a product or service withrisks and revenues that differs from those of otherbusiness segments.b)A geographical segment informs about risks andrevenues that differs from other geographicsegments in terms of economical, political etc.,reasons.c)According to US GAAP a segment is a part of thecompany which leads to expenses and revenues andwhich underlies to its own profitability and allocationof resources.d)As per IAS & US GAAP a segment has to be reportedif external revenues achieve 10% of the totalrevenues.

Segments in New GL: 1)the segment field is a std., account assignment objectavailable in my SAP ERP.2)Segments can be defined in addition to Co.codes,Controlling Areas, Profit centers, Functional Areas,Business Areas etc.3)Technically segments are defined at the client level.Segments are not assigned to any co.area orco.code(similar to business area and functional area).4)Segment can be used for reporting analysis below theco.code level(Segment Reporting).5)ERP system enables you to assign a segment in the masterdata of the profit center.6)Segment is posted to automatically when PC is posted.7)There is no dummy segment concept like PC.DOCUMENT SPLITTING
