X is the beginning point of the research N is the end point
The equation was originally 0 1: I’ve always thought that research was a process of getting to know and understand a subject, going through differentstages, from unknown to known. Reflecting on all the projects I’ve been done thissemester, I got this new equation. There are two major questions I’m facing:Should research start with completely unknown (0)?And should research have a goal (1)?

Rethinking Lanarca:Have no idea about Cyprus, andnever heard about Lanarca before but I haveworked with businessmen, and have some ideas about businessmenthrough my network (parents, friends);myself go to gym regularly
I found that on one side I was almost new to all the topics/subjects I wasworking on(marked red), but on the other side, there were parts I wasclearly aware of, or known about(marked orange)and is more about myknowledge and experience.
I took a look at the beginning stage of these projects: Narrative and Identity:First time metmy project pair Leslieshe seems quite special, anda little difficult to approachStoryshapes/East London Line:I just arrived in London for about a month, haven’t taken ELL at all but I dotake tube everyday and always like to observing people on the Tube, imagining their storiesThe Campus of the Future:The future is unknownBeing a student, I think I have an understanding of campus and education; I’vestudied the technology trends
Should research start with completely unknown?

How do these red and orange parts work in the research process? I then layout thefirst research step for each project: Narrative and IdentityStart with talking to Leslie for 2hours in the Central ClubStoryshapes/East London LineStart with taking ELL and walking around the stations/areas along ELL with thewhole group
(Site Research)
The Campus of the FutureStart with using STEEP(Social, Technology, Economics, Ecology and Politics) toimagine the future world
(Desk Research)
Rethinking LanarcaStart with looking up basic information about Lanarca

Should research start with completely unknown?
It was interesting to see that almost for all the projects, we first approached theunknown part (marked red) and started with the subject itself. The methodologieswe used were mainly Desk Research and Site Research. Start with gatheringinformation on the unknown parts helps us with the fear of “white paper”, gettingsomething to start up with; it also make sure that we have a overview of thesubject and are objective enough; everyone we work within the group are on thesame page.Does the orange part influence the research process then? What is X?
X =
Assumptions NotionStereotypePersonal experience/interests
X is lenses or filter we add to the research process. It could be the motivator for the research, for example the in the Campus of Future project, my interests intechnology and forecasting driven me in the research process; Take a risk - itcould help us find interesting ways to conduct the research, for example, thisresearch we did in East London Line project:We integrated questionnaire into a game, and played it with the passenger. Itmade the research process more engaging.
