Class Materials
It is also mandatory that you purchase: 1. Portable external hard drive. Buy it within two weeks. It needs to be a FireWire 800, not USB or FireWire 400, and the size of the drive should be at least 100 GB and must be Mac or Mac/PC compatible. Do not save material until drive has been formatted. Try Frys Electronics or online (B&H Photo Video, TigerDirect, Apple store, Newegg or Amazon). It is recommended to buy a G-Force (Technology) or Maxtor external hard drive. Do not leave cord connected when storing device. Avoid Western Digital. There also have been connection/reliability issues with LaCie and reliability issues with Iomega. 2. Headphones. Any standard headphone will work for this class. 3. Three-ring binder. There are numerous handouts provided for this class because no text is required. You are expected to troubleshoot problems on your own. I put many of the handouts on my Teaching webpage. Course Goals

Course Changes

Class assignments and lectures reflect the changing nature of online communication. The professor may make changes in the course schedule as the semester progresses, and thus students used to structure may experience discomfort in this class. Students will be able to check out equipment, including digital cameras, audio recorders, video cameras and tripods.

Equipment

Equipment can be checked out for a maximum of 24-36 hours from Room 608. Equipment for the weekend can be checked out if s/he picks up the camera after 3 p.m. on Friday and returns it by 10 a.m. the following Monday. If you are one minute late, your check out privileges will be revoked. Students are strongly encouraged to reserve equipment well in advanced. Equipment can be reserved by stopping in Room 608 or by calling 602.496.5253. Hours are Mon.-Thur. 8 am -10 pm, Fri. 8 am - 7 pm, and Sat. 10 am - 5 pm. It is the students responsibility to ensure that s/he has all of the necessary equipment, NOT the lab employee. All equipment, and all content captured by the equipment, is the sole property of Arizona State University and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The content captured is intended for the sole purpose of meeting the goals and objectives of this course, and may not be used, distributed or sold for any other purpose without the express consent of the instructor or authorized administrator. Any violation of the video usage guidelines or the Cronkite School Equipment Checkout Agreement is subject to referral to the Standards Committee for possible disciplinary action.

Adobe Creative Suite 5 (CS5) (Photoshop, Dreamweaver), Fetch FTP, and Apple Final Cut Pro. Dreamweaver and Photoshop on the video editing bay computers are older versions than the rest of the building. Students must NOT work on Adobe projects in the editing bays or projects WILL BECOME CORRUPTED.

Skills

Class Lab Hours Mon. Thurs. 7am 10pm, Fri. 7am 7pm, Sat. 12pm 9pm, Sun. 11am 8pm Please check the sheet outside the door during the weekdays to see when labs are open. There are also video edit bays on the 6th floor for your use. Software specialist Nic Lindh will be on hand to help students in room 352 Tues/Thurs 2-4pm.

Please do not disrupt the class time with ringing cell phones, text messages, private conversations, etc. During class time, you will be allowed to use a personal laptop only to take notes. You are prohibited to use the laptop during class time for personal reasons, such as email, web browsing, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Such activities are a severe distraction for not only the professor, but also your peers. Engaging in personal activities online will result in by asked to leave class by the professor, possible grade deduction, or discontinued use of the laptop. Drink and food are not allowed in the classroom. Please arrive to class on time and listen respectfully while the instructor, guest lecturer or other students are speaking. This also includes not checking email or social networking sites. Tardiness and use of these devices/internet during lectures will affect your final grade and you may be asked to leave the classroom. If you finish your assignment early, you can go online, however, if you are doing this during class, you will be docked points each time. If you do not actively participate in class discussions, you will also be docked.

Etiquette

Attendance

There are no excused absences. However, you can miss two classes, and any absences beyond two classes will result in a minimum of a full-grade penalty on your semester grade for each missed class. Tardiness is considered the same as an absence, and will affect your final grade. It is advised not to miss class because each class reflects a unique knowledge area. Homework is due at the beginning of each class without exception. Assignments handed in one day, one hour or one minute late will receive the minimum of two full grade deductions. This is a class where you learn a new application almost every week. Thus, if you plan to do your assignment at the last minute and you are unfamiliar with the technology, there is a good chance you will be late. You should save yourself enough time to be able to ask the professor a question if a problem should occur, or save yourself enough time to research how to troubleshoot the problem.

Deadlines

Academic Integrity Adhering to a high ethical standard is of special importance in the world of journalism, where reliability and credibility are the cornerstones of the field. Therefore, the Cronkite School has adopted a zero tolerance policy on academic dishonesty. If any student is found to have engaged in academic dishonesty in any form - including but not limited to cheating, plagiarizing and fabricating - that student will receive a grade of XE for the class and will be dismissed from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Reinstatement will not be considered. There will be no exceptions. At the beginning of every Cronkite class, each student will be given a copy of the full academic integrity policy, along with accompanying information on plagiarism. Students must sign a pledge that indicates they have read and understood the material and agree to abide by the policy. Assignments

You will be given in-class assignments and exercises, as well as outside of class assignments. You will have to complete some of the work on your personal computer or in a computer lab. Unless specified in the syllabus, all work must be printed and turned in at the beginning of class. All papers must be typed. Save all of your homework on your external drive and a personal computer. At least once a year, a students computer crashes and s/he loses her/his work. In the online world, it is imperative to back up your work. You also will work on a final project that will pull together the skills you will learn in this class. The instructor will divide the class into teams. Each person is required to pull her/his own weight. If one member does not pull their weight, their grade will be adversely affected.

Readings

Readings are listed on the day that they are due. It is your responsibility to look ahead to the next class period to determine what should be read for that days class. Grading of assignments, exercises and the final project will be based on your ideas, work ethic, meeting deadlines, quality of writing, grammar and spelling as well as your understanding of the web fundamentals. No C- or D+ grades can be given. And it takes a lot of hard work on every assignment to get an A. Individual assignments and the final grade will be graded as follows: 97-100% = A+ 94-96% = A 90-93% = A87-89% = B+ 84-86% = B 80-83% = B77-79% = C+ 74-76% = C 60-69% = D 59% and below

Blog and Comments Assignment: 75 points


Blog On the homepage, you should have these items by the first assignment due date: Text box-provide your full name including a few sentences related to the site purpose; Search engine box; Blogroll include at least three current blogs that you perceive as credible related to your blog topic. Current means that they should have

produced at least one post in the past three months; and On the About/Contact page, you must have these items: Picture, Email address, and At least one paragraph focused on your background and one related to the purpose of the site. Posts (20 points each post) = 60 points Students must complete three blog entries. The posts are due by the beginning of class on each due date. Late posts will not be accepted. You are encouraged to read each others blogs. I will post your classmates URLs on my website (http://www.serenacarpenter.com). Please email me your URL on the first day that the assignment is due. Blog entries should demonstrate that you are an expert or that you care about a particular topic. Your blog posts should reflect what you have learned in class. The posts should reflect research. Please see the grading rubric for required blogging elements. Remember to: Keep your blog posts short. Add detail via hyperlinks. Do not hesitate to talk about someone elses blog including linking to it. Write an informational headline. You should also show a good command of Standard English and have some flair and originality. This should be a reflection of you and your passion, not another persons words. Remember the world of blogging is about sharing useful, insightful and educational information. The blog must be educational, entertaining and show that your understand topic. You cannot use copyrighted material. You can only link to content. You cannot use copyrighted material. Use your own material or creative commons content. Please see the Teaching page on places to obtain free multimedia and how to properly attribute. Two Comments (5 points each week) = 15 points You are also required to post one comment per week totaling four comments. The comment is due on the same day of your blog post. You must comment on two separate blogs related to your blog topic each week. Comments must add informational value to the bloggers post. You want to engage in dialogue with the blogger. Do not write comments such as good job or nice post. These types of comments will receive a zero grade. On the due date of when each blog post is due, you must email me at Serena.Carpenter@asu.edu: 1) the URL of the blog post featuring your comment, not the URL of the blog and 2) your actual comment in the email. You must comment on at least five different blogs throughout the semester. Looking forward to reading your blogs! This is an important step in understanding how craft content for online users. Remember comments are often indexed by Google.

Twitter assignment: 15 points


1. Basics Fill out your bio, add a photo, and share your URL. Set up Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, or Seesmic 2. Write down your Twitter goal(s) in summary paper. Examples include: Get more social media mentions of your blog or site Find sources Increase readership Build reputation in a niche area Build relationships with clients Find new story angles 3. Identify and follow 25 people (excluding friends) that will help you attain your goal. 4. Tweet Posts 20 posts for a one week period Tweet ten original informative tweets related to your goal. Do not tweet disconnected information to the public. Retweet or @reply someone five times. Use a meaningful #hashtag in three separate posts. Most tweets should contain links. 5. Use URL shortener Sign up for bit.ly or another URL shortener service. YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR AN ACCOUNT BEFORE TWEETING. You must share only shortened URLs. Connect your Tweetdeck to your bit.ly account in settings > services

6. Reflection Summary Share with me what you learned and your thoughts about Twitter in meeting your goals. If you have used Twitter for some time, please share with me some innovative approaches related to your use of Twitter. I would love to learn from you.

Group members will each write an article under the theme decided by their group. Please keep in constant communication with your group throughout the semester to ensure that you are not including the same elements as other members of your group in your article. Remember that your idea for this article

must have many visual tentacles for sidebars. A common mistake I see is that reporters cite a few sources and write their content around those sources. This article is an in-depth piece. Your goal should be to inform and educate news users on this topic. I must learn something from your piece, which requires primary research. Primary research requires citing original material, not sources cited by someone else. I should be able to verify the authenticity of your information. You must verify the information presented to you by your sources. Do not wait until the last minute. I will be critical when grading your assignment. The article must include: Research o Examples are linking to primary sources used, including data, doing shoe-leather reporting (you could count how many restaurants are located within two blocks of the school in the Phoenix area that offer sub sandwiches), and speaking with experts. o Articles should not contain a large amount of opinionated information from sources. o Never assume. Read each sentence and determine whether that information is an assumption. Diversity of sources o Citing only the opinion of people with no direct experience with the issue will result in a low grade. Think about each source and what value they add to understanding the issue. You are not allowed to cite your classmates. Educational information o Provide specifics and details. An example is Arizona has one of the worst K-12 educational systems. I would like statistics and comparative data to back up your claims, rather than assumptions and generalizations. The article must include elements: Headline Remember to include keywords. Summary deck This is one to two sentences summarizing the article. Your name By Serena Carpenter Location PHOENIX Article begins Subheads (if necessary) Break up lengthy articles. Be literal. Meaningful links in bold At the end of the article, provide: Engagement story You are required to create a story reflecting your efforts to engage offline or online community members. Engagement elements What elements will you add to your article to encourage engagement with you or the content? A pull quote with attribution A quote from your article that pulls the reader into the article. Info box idea(s) history, stats, background, map, timeline, etc. Video sidebar idea - It must be related to the text story, but cannot have the same focus. For example, if you write a text story on state laws related to street performing; the video sidebar could be on the life of a street performer. Bold the words you plan to treat as links. In the order of the links within your

article, place corresponding URLS at the end of your article. Remember to verify the credibility of these sources. Lightrail Survey Research Project: 30 points


In 2009, developers of the CityCircles for Phoenix METRO light rail project won a $95,0000 Knight News Challenge grant. The mobile app recently launched in July of 2011. The hyperlocal app features train schedules, business listings, and an event calendar for all 28 light rail station stops. In 2010, the METRO light rail served 12.6 million riders, resulting in an average weekday ridership of 39,335 according to Valley Metro. The target audiences for CityCircles app developers are light rail passengers and small businesses around the Phoenix metropolitan area station stops, according to grant winner Adam Klowann. Key members of this passenger group include college students (approximately 40% of passengers) using the light rail to ride from campus to campus for classes. This intention of the student collaborative project is to create a hyperlocal model that will support the future sustainability of the CityCircles mobile app. Arizona State University students have often expressed to educators that they must find a job along the light rail due to transportation constraints. Phoenix is geographically spread out, which creates challenges for people dependent upon public transportation. Thus, an app that focuses on job classifieds along the light rail will serve as information service and a potential future revenue stream for CityCircles. Surveys will be employed to collect information on employment needs, walking distance constraints, and app job feature preferences of light rail passengers. The undergraduate student group will initially focus their efforts on major light rail stops in Tempe and Phoenix, and if time permits, venture to the other community stops. Based on passenger survey and CityCircles traffic data, focus areas will include stops from Camelback Avenue to Jefferson Street and from Mill Avenue to McClintock Avenue. Once questionnaire information is collected, a selected Cronkite School student will enter the information into a SPSS statistical program. The undergraduate student team will present and make recommendations to the Phase 2 business team and app developers based on their survey findings. The first phase of this project will be to collect and make recommendations to CityCircles on job needs in the Phoenix valley. Required elements: 1. Each student is required to have 20 people respond to the survey 2. Participant diversity is expected. All surveys should not be from the student population.

3. Write up summary of the data and recommendations to app developers.


Also, provide the location of stop. 4. Make sure that participants have not filled out a previous version of the survey.

Multimedia Promotion: 50 points


You are encouraged to experiment and create a multimedia promotional piece about the project. Creativity is key in this exercise. It can be a campaign, music video (no copyrighted music), sketch, etc. The key is to create something that people will share.

Personal Hero multimedia stories: 45 points


This piece is an essay summarizing the effect your personal hero had on you. Required elements: 1. Interview of your personal hero and interview of yourself talking about your hero 2. Visual component select the component(s) most appropriate for your sidebar. Examples include b-roll, photos, graphics, text, etc. The visual component should add value to the piece. 3. Post video on Tumblr blog. Encourage the person to post about the video to the Tumblr blog.

Engagement/Crowdsourcing piece: 80 points


You are expected to use this project as an experiment to engage users on different social media platforms or encourage engagement offline. Those platforms include Facebook, YouTube, Digg, Reddit, Twitter, Quora, online communities, etc. This exercise to encourage you to think about public better, encouraging loyalty to your site, and learning how to engage in communities to create content. Required elements: 1. Use interactive or social media to produce a piece that engages people beyond the page. These elements can including creating an item that encourages public contributions, volunteer efforts or conversations with the creators of this site or other people interested in this topic. Some of these engagement efforts should be present in the final project. I expect to see stories reflecting your work on the final project site. 2. Storify, Google maps, Twitter hashtagged feeds, stories inspired from and reflecting public contribution. Remember information must be verified and vetted by you. 3. Use metrics to share measure of traffic and record participation over the semester. Consistent participation on the class blog and your assigned social media channel is expected. 4. Participation on your assigned social media channel weekly. It can include a post about an article related to the project, related photo and caption, useful links, reflection pieces, etc. 5. Write a reflection paper on your efforts and what you learned about

engaging the public. You must also share tables and data reflecting your social media efforts.

Banner Assignment: 15 points


A banner is the first object people see when visiting your site. It gives them an impression of your Web site. It is usually the most creative element of the Web site, and thus requires more time to create than any other element. It will be featured on every single page of your site.

Grading Criteria
10 points -- typography, color, layout, graphics 5 points -- "Wow!" factor: Will a potential employer be impressed? Is it original? Does it look professional? Do the images reflect you in the best manner? Does it do a good job of reflecting what you what potential employers to see? Does it look credible? Can you design your entire site around this banner?

The Hero Project: 150 points


This assignment requires SOLID REPORTING. This means research, aggregating data, making phone calls, etc. The journalistic, educational and storytelling aspects are more important to me than the technical requirements, thus, I will apply more weight to those aspects when grading. This assignment revolves around one topic. The group will write several different pieces focused on the group topic. Members will be docked for a lack of contribution. Do not take elements from the web. If your work is of high quality and has informational value, it will be published in the CronkiteZine online magazine. If it is of superb quality, it will be submitted to journalism competitions. I expect you to revise your work to make your package even better for publication. You will receive a handout on the grading criteria related to this assignment. 1. Brainstorming I would like you to dissect the construct of hero at an intellectual, scientific and emotional level (e.g., superhero, personal hero, terrorist, greek hero, anti-hero, animals, etc.).What does it mean to be a hero? What is the history of the construct? How do myths differ among countries? Cultures? What traits reflect a hero? History? International perspectives? Research? Human connection to heroes? Is it human nature for people to behave as heroes? What about the average person (e.g., free hugs campaign)? We will have conversations in the classroom about the construct. Those thoughts

and conversations will be posted to a Tumblr blog. The hope is that these conversations will stimulate feedback from the public on the definition and suggestions for topics and sources. Students will promote the microblog in hopes of engaging international and national communities in the conversation. So we want to be both transparent and welcome contributions from the community on the project. 2. Research and reporting Based on the conversations, students will report and research on a specific areas. They will also produce text, visual and public engagement stories based on feedback from the public (e.g., Storify). Consider a conversation sidebars or pages dedicated to engaging the page and the site. 3. Website development You will create a site that houses all of the content. You will also critically think about how to encourage stickiness to the site and encourage conversations based on their content. On the bio page, you will create and post a video story dedicated to your personal hero. You are encouraged to experiment with visual storytelling. The key is to capitalize of the visual aspect. Avoid wallpaper video. For example, a piece on education should only include shots that help understand education, rather than random shots of students working at a desk or walking on campus. Think about how to best communicate the story or information. It is encouraged to go beyond just an interview and a few b-roll shots, especially for those individuals with a broadcast background. You will receive a grading sheet, which will reflect how you will be graded. This final project must include multimedia in-depth stories related to the subject matter of the final project. These stories cannot be the same angles as the text stories. 4. Reflection Throughout the process, you will capture video and textual reflections about the project and your article.

This is a portfolio that demonstrates the breadth of your professional work. Be creative! If you use a template for either the portfolio or final project, you will receive a grade of 0.

Continue writing your blog. Or begin another one. Each post must have at least one meaningful link. You are required to write at least 12 posts including the three you have already written. This should not be done at the very end of the semester. Each post should be well thought out and edited. The extra credit is due on the last day of class.
