One Sunday morning, at about eleven
SCENE
:
In the living room. Simply furnished. A window at the right. At the rear, a corridor. A door onthe left. Sofa, chairs, etc. at the discretion of the director.
INTRO:
DON FRANCISCO, about sixty, is sitting on the sofa, smoking a cigar. He wears anice-looking lounging robe. Presently, ROBERTING, his twenty-year old son, good-looking,well dressed, enters. He wants to ask something from his father, but before he gathersenough courage, he maneuevers about the sala and clears his throat several times beforehe finally approachs him.
ROBERTING:
(Clearing his throat.) Ehem – ehem-- ehem!
FRANCISCO:
(Looking up briefly.) Ehem.
ROBERTING:
Dad.
FRANCISCO:
(Without looking at him.) Ano ‘yun?
ROBERTING:
Dad.
FRANCISCO:
Ano?
ROBERTING:
Da --
FRANCSICO:
Ano nga ‘yun?
ROBERTING:
Well, kasi ganito ‘yun. Ahm ahm --
FRANCISCO:
Anong ‘yun?
ROBERTING:
Pa’no ba kasi ‘to. Ang hirap i-explain, Daddy.
FRANCISCO:
Kung wala ka namang sasabihin, saka mo na ako kausapin kapag tapos na ako ditosa mga papeles ko.
ROBERTING:
 
Sige, sige. Ngayon na lang, Dad. Tungkol kasi sa pera.
FRANCISCO:
Pera! Anong pera?
ROBERTING:
Kasi ganito yun --
FRANCISCO:
 
(Imitating his tone.) Kasi ganito – Nakikita mong busy ako, ‘di ba?
ROBERTING:
 
Ah, kelangan ko kasi ng pera, Dad.
 
FRANCISCO:
 
(Dropping the paper.) Kelangan mo ng pera? ‘Di ba nagtatrabaho ka na ngayon?
ROBERTING:
Oo nga po, kaso -- kulang pa sweldo ko.
FRANCISCO:
Magkano ba kinikita mo ngayon?
ROBERTING:
Otyenta, Dad.
FRANCISCO:
Eighty pesos? Aba! Halos kinikita mo na rin ang katulad ng sa akin.
ROBERTING:
You don’t understand, Dad.
FRANCISCO:
Hmmp! I really don’t understand.
ROBERTING:
Don’t misunderstand me, Dad.
FRANCISCO:
Aba! Kakasabe mo lang na na hindi mo ako maintindihan -- that means na I’m notcapable of understanding. Tapos sasabihin mo ngayong not to misunderstand you --meaning na I’m capable of understanding pala. Ano ba sa dalawa, ha?
ROBERTING:
Hindi kasi, ganito ‘yun, Dad. Ang point ko is --
FRANCISCO:
Sige. Go on.
ROBERTING:
I want-- pa’no ba -- I want my old allowance.
FRANCISCO:
(Jumping.) Gago! Gusto mo ibalik ko ang dating allowance mo? Nagtatrabaho ka atsumusweldo ng otyenta pesos and ni singkong duling, wala kang maibigay samin sa pagtiramo dito sa aking bahay. Tapos ngayon, hihingi ka pa ng allowance?
ROBERTING:
Dad, kasi ganito. Marami akong gastusin kasi --
FRANCISCO:
Magkano na ba naiipon mo sa bangko?
ROBERTING:
How can I save anything?
FRANCISCO:
Wala ka palang iniipon! Anu bang regalo binibigay mo dyan sa girlfriend mo? Kotse?House and lot?
ROBERTING:
(Embarrassed.) I -- er -- I--
FRANCISCO:
Flowers? (ROBERTING nods.) Sais siete pesos para dyan sabulaklak?(ROBERTING nods again.) Tarantado! Nung magnobyo pa lang kami ng nanaymo, mani o balut lang binibigay ko dyan.(DOÑA PETRA, about fifthy-five enters and catches his last words.)
PETRA:
Oo, natatandaan ko yun, Daddy. Kung alam mo lang kung ano sinasabe ni Nay kapagnagbibigay ka ng mga ganun.
“Ka kuripot naman!” 
FRANCISCO:
Pero, Petra, ‘yang magaling mong anak ay kumikita na ng otyenta pesos. Ni hindinga s’ya nagbabayad ni sentimo para sa gastusin natin dito sa bahay, and on the top of that,hinihingi pa n’ya ang old allowance n’ya. Where in the world have you seen such a thing?
PETRA:
Aba, may alam akong lugar ako na ang mga anak ay nagtatrabaho, tapos hindi silamagbibigay ng sweldo sa mga magulang nila. And still, they ask for allowance.
FRANCISCO:
Saan?
PETRA:
Sa Pilipinas.
FRANCISCO:
Aba! Pinapakita mo ngayon ang pagiging illustrada mo, Petra.
PETRA:
(To ROBERTING.) Nak, You’re not going to get any centavo from us.
 
ROBERTING:
Pero, Mom --
PETRA:
Kung wala kang pang-taxi, sumakay ka na lang ng jeep.
ROBERTING:
Sasakay ng jeepney para bumisita sa isang babae, ay!
PETRA:
(Imitating.) Ay ka d’yan.(ROBERTING goes out, mumbling.)
PETRA:
(Calling.) Francisco!
FRANCISCO:
Ha?
PETRA:
Engot! Yung katulong natin tinatawag ko.
FRANCISCO:
Kasi naman, sa dinami dami pang tawag sa katulong, kapangalan pa ng may-ari ngbahay.
PETRA:
Paalisin ko na yang katulong natin. Nakabasag na naman ng pinggan mo.
FRANCISCO:
Na naman? ‘Di ko alam ang dahilan kung bakit palagi na lang niya nababasag mgapinggan ko. Hindi naman niya nababasag mga plato mo, o kay Roberting, even Nena’s.Hindi. Alam ko na! Binabasag n’ya lang mga pinggan ko.(FRANCISCO, the servant, enters. He is dark, tall, thin boy. He looks foolish and is. He has hismouth open all the time.)
SERVANT:
Opo, Señora.
PETRA:
Ginawa mo na ba ‘yung sign na sinasabe ko?
SERVANT:
Ahh. ‘Yun po ba yung sinasabi n’yong gawin ko?
PETRA:
(Emphatically.) Malamang.
SERVANT:
‘Yun po ba ‘yung may nakasulat na: “Wanted a Muchaco”?
PETRA:
(Irritated.) Oo, Don Francisco!
FRANCISCO:
Ha?
PETRA:
No, kausap ko ‘tong katulong natin. So, ano? Nagawa mo na ba?
SERVANT:
Ahh. Nakalimutan ko po kasi kung pa’nu bibigkasin. Ngayon ko lang ‘din po naalala.
PETRA:
Tanga! Hala, sige. Pumunta ka sa labas at gawin mo yan. (SERVANT goes out.)
FRANCISCO:
Nasaan si Nena?
PETRA:
Hayun, natutulog pa rin.
FRANCISCO:
Sa ganitong oras? Mag aalas onse na na.
PETRA:
Bayaan mo na, Linggo naman e.
FRANCISCO:
Nakapagsimba na ba s’ya?
PETRA:
Sa tingin ko, oo. Kaning alas kwatro ng umaga.
FRANCISCO:
Kaya si Nena umuwe ng late galing party, tapos wala pang kasamang chaperon?
PETRA:
Isa beses lang namang nangyare, Dad.
FRANCISCO:
Haay. I hope nothing happened.
PETRA:
Anu naman sa tingin mo pwedeng mangyare? Akala ko ba pinag-usapan na natin ‘to?
FRANCISCO:
Oo, alam ko. Pero isipin mo. Isang dalagang Filipina pumunta sa isang party nawalang chaperon.
