Facebook Applications
Building a Facebook application (app) is a great way to gain exposure to one of the largest social networkingcommunities on the Internet. At minimum an app should have the following essential functions:1.A compelling reason for users to use/visit the app’s canvas page2.A compelling reason for users to add the app to their Facebook profile3.An easy way for a user to share the app with their friends4.An easy way for a user to “take” the app from their friends
1. A compelling reason for users to use/visit the app’s canvas page
A Facebook App has to provide users with “something to do.” It has to be interesting enough for users toreturn to the app over and over again. Note that Facebook provides a customizable URL for your app andthat your app runs within the framework of the Facebook site (see example, below).Good examples are the
Dancing Zeev
Compare Friends
Dancing Zeev:
The “Dancing Zeev” app is an app that allows the user to create a dance for an animated character and addthis character to their profile page. Above is the app’s canvas page shown as it is seen in the Facebook website. The area highlighted in red is the app’s area and the rest is the Facebook site surrounding it. The areain red is being hosted on the app creator’s web site and shown imbedded in the Facebook web site. Asstated above, Facebook provides a custom URL for the app. For example, this app’s custom URL is:
Notice that an app can be as simple or complex as you would like to make it. The Dancing Zeev app allowsyou to create a dance that is rendered with the animated character as a flash application on the left. Alsonotice the call to action near the top: “Put a dancing Zeev in your Profile.” This call to action is very importantas is the only way that users will be able to add your app to their profile page.

Compare People:
Compare People allows a user to compare their friends by a set of criteria and see the results at the end. What keeps people coming back is that the more friends they compare, the more friends can compare themand they can then see the results. This app is more complex than the Dancing Zev app in that it uses Facebook’s FBML (Facebook MarkupLanguage) to imbed friends’ names and pictures into the app itself. Both apps provide entertainment and a compelling reason to return to the application.
