To protect the body from harmful organisms, the immunesystem identifies foreign molecules as ´nonselfµ and destroysthose cells.
Molecules recognized by the immune system are calledantigens. Antigens are usually protein fragments or carbohydrates.
Immune response to one·s own body is calledautoimmunity.
