Introduction
Nail art can begin with just painting a colour onto either natural or articial nails.As a nail technician, you will need to master and develop this skill. Nail art hasbecome a very popular extension to a regular nail service such as a manicure orpedicure treatment. It takes a lot of practice, and you will need a very good eyefor detail and a lot of patience. Remember that not all clients will be devoteesof nail art – some may only indulge in nail art for a special occasion and requireonly a basic design, while others may want the most elaborate and extravagantdesign to t their nail enhancements. It takes careful discussion and a detailedclient consultation to determine which method of nail art to carry out and it isa good idea to make a display of your own designs to give the client an idea ofwhat is available.There are many dierent nail art techniques. This unit will look at the dierenttypes and eects to be achieved. All you need to achieve these designs is a littleimagination and the correct equipment.
Prepare for nail art service
Preparation is vital to ensure you are ready to perform any type of nail art designthat a client might ask you to create. It also demonstrates a professional attitudeand promotes good time management. A nail technician also needs to be awareof the importance of sterilisation and sanitisation of all tools, the working areaand themselves, as this is part of the preparation process.
Salon requirements for preparing yourself, theclient and the work area
Before a client arrives at the salon to have a nail art treatment, the working areaand technician must be prepared fully, to ensure the treatment runs smoothly.As a nail technician, you have aprofessional image to maintainwhich is vital to your success andthat of the business. When you aretraining to become a technician,you are assessed on your personalpresentation and hygiene. Thestandards for these assessmentsare set by the awarding bodies thatyour assessors must follow whenyou are being assessed. Throughoutyour career you will be expected byemployers, clients and colleaguesto continue the high standards thatyou had to maintain throughout yourstudies. Use a training hand with nail tips topractise new designs, as this can bea good way to help clients choosetheir own designs and can be usedas a visual aid, especially for clientswho are hearing impaired.

Environmental conditions suitable for nail artservices
It is important to have and maintain the correct environmental conditions toensure a safe, healthy and eective treatment is performed. Good environmentalconditions include adequate lighting, ventilation, temperature and comfort, whichenable the technician to perform the treatment correctly and ensure the safety,health and comfort of the client and yourself. Consultation techniques used to identifyservice objectives
To identify the service objectives required to create an individual treatment plan,good communication skills, such as what we say or our body language, arevital. Consultation techniques include being an active listener, demonstratinggood questioning techniques, ensuring understanding between the technician andthe client, the location of the consultation, demonstrating good body languageand having legible written communication. The importance of carrying out a nail and skinanalysis
As a nail technician, you must understand the importance of carrying out a nailand skin analysis during the consultation. There are many contra-indications thatcan prevent a treatment from happening – the client might suer from a nailor skin condition that could be contagious, it could be painful to work on or thetreatment may make the condition worse. If none of these possibilities applies,then the treatment could be performed with restrictions or
adaptations

Use all types of communication to perform an effective consultation

Ensure the salon has appropriatemusic playing in the backgroundat the correct volume to create apleasant environment. Becausethere will be strong-smelling odoursfrom the types of treatments beingperformed, think about the aromaof the salon. Essential oils on potpourri or in oil burners will helpcreate a soothing environment.
