On December 15, 2011 President Obamanominated Sharon Block and Richard Griffin tobe members of the National Labor RelationsBoard (NLRB).Sharon Block workedas a senior staffer for Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) on the SenateHealth, Education,Labor, and PensionsCommittee. During her time on the committee,Democrats spent muchof their timeunsuccessfully trying topass card-checklegislation.During her previous tenure at the NLRB, shedefended the board’s decision to awardbackpay to an illegal immigrant. The SupremeCourt reversed the board’s decision. Fn.1.In another case, she sought to force a trashcollection company to recognize a union after an election marred by the NLRB’s negligenceand union misconduct. A federal appeals courtrejected the NLRB’s petition for enforcement.An NLRB official had overslept and failed tooversee the planned unionization election. Theboard then arbitrarilyrescheduled the electionwithout consultinganyone. The companyalleged that someemployees switched their votes because theythought that managementhad caused the delay.Furthermore, it wasalleged that a unionorganizer had promisedthat those who voted for the union would have their $300 union initiationfees waived.
