1946youngDavidjoinedhisfamily'sbankingbusiness

ChaseNational
Bank
asanassistant

gerinitsforeign
department
.Hismother'sbrotherwaschairman

Chasewhenhewenttoworkthere.NaturallyDavidRockefellerroserapidly,
and
in1969hewas
named
chair
manand
chiefexecutiveofChase
Manhattan
(Chase
andthe
smaller
Manhattan
Bank
had
mergedin1955).
The
Chasebankhasbeenacornerstoneof
the
Rockefellerempiresince
at
least1930whentheoldChaseNational
Bank
wasmergedwith
the
Equitable
Trust
Company
.
With
listedassetsofmore
than
$68billion,Chase
Manhattan
isthethird-largest
bank
in
the
world(behindCiticorp
andBank
ofAmerica).Inaddition,itcontrolslargeblocksofstockina
