PROLOGUE
Mack Smithson returned home withthe corpse of his Daughter, Meana, andburied her within the mountain cave. Hisrocky relationship with Shentaila was nobetter, and yet surprisingly no worse for theloss. They spent the next few years trying tokeep out of the building of the new kingdomand its affairs. They continued to miss theirdragon friends as Smithy was no longer ableto create any dragon steel. They would hearreports of Munsigor or Norkannon attackingtowns along the continent's coast, but noneon the island. This puzzled them greatly, asthey were torching the island's enemies.King Rettep had banned slavery ofany form in England, and was only waiting todo so to the colonies. These were unpopularactions against the families of wealth. Heknew he needed to win over those on theisland before taking on the others. Heneeded to show it work successfully herefirst.The knights that fled from the finalbattle with Prince John joined armies of theisland's enemies. Leafill had found Kranarwith at least a dozen arrow shafts in him anda dozen of the fleeing knights lying about. Hebrought Kranar back to the castle for aproper hero's burial.

For his own heroism, the Kingagreed to reduce the debts Leafill's familyowed. Leafill was glad, but he needed morethan that. He would end up cutting a dealwith the knights turned outlaws, which hediscovered in Sherwood forest. When he waswith them he would be called Robin of theHood, when he was gone he would beaddressed as Sir Leafill. He even becameappointed the lead knight responsible for theapprehension of these renegades. For hisservices, he received a one-third cut fromeverything stolen by Robin Hood's merrymen.More of the various magical speciesseemed to die out over this quiet period. Infact, they were accepting the Gargoyle Godand Goddess' offer of safe refuge from theworld. Shillseen's children fared well in thetemporary isolation, though she was notdoing as well. She constantly watched overher son and husband's actions, wishing shecould stop them. She prayed daily that Godwould intercede and save them.Finally, on a spring morning Smithyand Shentaila's family received a visitor. Aflash of bright light was to catch theirattention as they fed the animals. Gabrielstood just inside the cave entrance, he wasgarbed in armor as if going to battle. "Pleaseexcuse the interruption, but the time ofdarkness draws near. Soulreaper's attacksalong the continent have angered thesenation's rulers. They have bonded together tolay siege upon England.
