BALL-ANDSOCKET JOINT
HINGE JOINT
2 - MUSCLES AND SINEWS They are the presupposition for the active motion of the knee. The muscles end in sinews and -via them -are connected with the bones . Under tension the muscles contract, the bones are moved in the direction of the tension. At the same time the traction of the muscel keeps the joint in its position.
3 - KNEECAP Is the bony component of the patellar tendon which connects the fermoral muscel (quadrizeps) with the shin.
5 - CARTILAGE The cartilage is a thin layer of 3 - 5 millimetrewhich covers thje ends of the thigh and the shank bone. Together with the joint fluid it permits frictionless movements.
1a/1b - LIGAMENTS The collateral ligaments (inner and outer ligaments, 1a) assure the contact of the joint areas (of the thigh and the shank)
4 - MENISCUS Thigh bone and shank bone contact each other in few points. The two bicorn buffer made of chondral netting, the inner and outer meniscus, balance the pressure and distribute it on a larger area.
