Brief presentation of the project
“Open Your Eyes” is a campaign for raising awareness regarding human trafficking through sexualexploitation initiated by the Nea Zoi organization (Athens, Greece) in partnership with the Ra
iu Centerfor Democracy (Turda, Romania), Love 146 (Bournemouth, Great Britain) and the National AgencyAgainst Human Trafficking (Romania). The campaign was launched on a European level in March 2010and it has been conducted in Romania from March – September 2011.The need to implement such a campaign for raising awareness among the general public was identified bythe campaign partners as a result of their practical experience in the field of preventing human traffickingand working with victims of such crimes. The “Open Your Eyes” campaign is mainly addressed to theRomanian young women who are exposed to the risk of sexual exploitation through human trafficking byaccepting marriage proposals and work or traveling offers abroad, in Greece and Great Britain.“Open Your Eyes” means informing activities such as: media campaigns, distributing informativematerials in the rural and urban environment and activities in public areas.The
purpose
of the “Open Your Eyes” campaign is to increase the ability of self-protection among thegeneral public in Romania, in order to decrease the risks of victimization through human trafficking.
The campaign’s objectives

decreasing the risk of victimization through human trafficking among 4000 Romanian young people,aged 14 to 20, by making available more information on this topic;-
 
increasing the level of awareness among the Romanian general public regarding the causes of humantrafficking and the scale of this phenomenon;-
 
Mobilizing the Romanian media in the prevention of human trafficking.Direct beneficiaries:

Romanian young people aged 14 to 20.Indirect beneficiaries: the families, similar groups and class mates of the 4000 young people directlyinvolved in the campaign, the whole community.

posters were printed in an A2 format (out of which 8400 were in Romanian and 600 in Hungarian)for the “Open Your Eyes” campaign.

Interested groups and volunteer centers.

Target group
: Romanian young people aged 14 to 20.
Timing
of the activities: May – September 2011.
Description of the activity
:The posters were distributed as follows:-
 
to schools in all 41 Romanian counties and in Bucharest;-
 
during training and raising awareness activities in public areas, organized during the campaign;-
 
in public spaces designated for street display (airports, train stations);-
 
in public transportation stations and vehicles.The informative materials of the “Open Your Eyes” campaign were distributed during discussion groupsorganized in schools, foster homes, school camps, rehabilitation centers, during activities organized inpublic areas (parks, job fairs, summer schools) and in public institutions. There were film screenings onthe issue of human trafficking, drawing exhibitions and theatre plays, work panels with psychologists –school counselors, police officers, law enforcement officers, professors, social workers from publicinstitutions, training sessions and street campaigns.The total number of beneficiaries of this campaign is estimated to

are young people aged 9 to 22.After the concept of the “Open Your Eyes” campaign was launched, the members of the IMPACT club inHâr
ova (the Noi Orizonturi Foundation), students aged 14 to 18, created a forum theatre play on thehuman trafficking theme, impersonating the “Loverboy” type of recruting. The initiators organized acampaign for prevention and raising awareness among the young women in their community, usingmeans of non-formal education. Ra
iu Center for Democracy and National Agency against HumanTrafficking supported this initiative with resources and expertise. This representation was continued onthe Mamaia beach, at the Romanian seaside. The forum theatre play had a great impact on the ones whoattended it in front of the Radio Vacan
a building, both because of the issue explored and because of themeans used, since it gave the audience the possibility to express their thoughts regarding the presentedscenes.
Media campaign
 For the purpose of raising the level of awareness among the general public regarding the effects of humantrafficking, two audio spots were created within the “Open Your Eyes Campaign” by the Ra
iu Center forDemocracy (Turda, Romania) and the Nea Zoi Organization (Athens, Greece).Six radio stations agreed to play the spot proposed by the “Open Your Eyes” organizers, out of which onewas local, one regional, three had national coverage and one was online, as follows: Radio Cluj, RadioTransilvania, Vocea Evangheliei, Radio France International, Enterbrussels and Radiolynx.Young activists in C
