EE 21 Solution to Quiz #3 2SAY11-12 1. Given: Zener diode circuit: VL = 20 V, RL = 1k, Vi varies from 30 to 50 Vdc. Required: Rs = ? Izmax = ?

Solution: IL is fixed @ VL/RL = 20 V / 1k = 20mA Rs can be determined by VDR, using the minimum value of Vi (NOT the maximum!)

20 30

1k ; Rs = 500 ohms 1k Rs

Finally, use these two equations: o IRsmax = Izmax + IL o Vimax = (Rs)(IRsmax )+ Vz o Vz = 20 Volts (zener voltage = load voltage) IL = 20 mA and Vimax = 50 V Youre going to come up with Izmax = 40mA.

2. This is a clamper circuit that raises the axis of the output voltage waveform. Remember that we had an example in graphing a clamper circuit that starts its forward bias on the NEGATIVE cycle. The output hence must be drawn as a square wave with a negative peak of -5 Volts and positive peak of 20 Volts. However! The drawing, when matched with the input (many of you didnt, but thats okay for this quiz), must start on the first forward bias! That is, either you must leave the first half (corresponding to the positive cycle) blank, or at 10V, because clamping doesnt start yet. 3. This is a modified rectifier circuit. Very similar to our example, the only difference being the location of the diodes. On the positive cycle, lower diode is FB, upper diode RB. The diodes switch states during negative cycle. The equivalent circuit for both is one of the resistors in series with two parallel resistors, one of which is the load resistance. The following calculations follow (for both cycles) Vo = Vi(1.1k/3.3k) = Vi/3.

Thus, the graph of the output is a pulsating sine wave with peak value of 5 volts. This is a full-wave rectifier (based on the OUTPUT, not on the number of diodes), thus Vdc = 0.636(5) = 3.18 Volts, since it is a sine wave input.
