2. What is the difference between an open and closed question? a. Open An open question is a question that has an unlimited amount of answers and is your opinion. For example, asking the question, Do you think we should help out Greece in their financial situation? You can say anything you want as its your opinion and the answers are limitless. b. Closed A closed question is a question that only has a limited amount of answers. It could be your opinion or factual information. For example, asking someone, What is your gender? is a question that only has two answers (limited amount of answers, two).

Asking a question that is factual or opinionated can dictate the question to closed answers, whereas asking someone for their opinion (by beginning your question by why do you think or in your opinion etc.). Doing this can lead into follow-up questions which you think of off the top of your head because of the answer given.

A likert scale is a 1-5 scale (from strongly disagree, disagree, not sure, agree, to strongly agree) that can use open and closed questions. The advantages are that it is easier to get prcised information than from yes or no questions.
