The Combat Studies Institute was established on 18 June 1979 as a department-levelactivity within the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth,Kansas. CSI has the following missions:1. Conduct research on historical topics pertinent to doctrinal concerns of the Armyand publish the results in a variety of formats for the Active Army and Reservecomponents.2. Prepare and present instruction in military history at USACGSC and assist otherUSACGSC epartments in integrating military history into their instruction.3. Serve as the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s executive agent for thedevelopment and coordination of an integrated, progressive program of military historyinstruction in the TRADOCservice school system.CSI Research Surveys are doctrinal research manuscripts, thematic in nature, that inves-tigate the evolution of specific doctrinal areas of interest to the U.S. Army. ResearchSurveys are based on primary and secondary sources and provide the foundation forfurther study of a given subject.
