The federal Conservative government has served notice to thousands of same-sex couples that have flocked to Canada from abroad since 2004 to get married are not legally married. But Canadian divorce law hasn’t exactly changed. In Canada, whether a marriage is considered legally valid depends on the law where the couple lives, not where they got married. To get a divorce, the couple must reside in Canada for one year.
