CHEMICAL HANDLING

A.

When a substance is received, information on proper handling, storage, and disposal should be known to employees who will be handling it. This information must be displayed on a label on the container. Also, a MSDS, Material Safety Data Sheet must accompany the chemical. No container will be accepted without a manufacturer label. The label should state the product name and associated hazards. Toxic substances need to be segregated in a well identified area with local exhaust ventilation. When storing chemicals, avoid direct sunlight and heat. Eye wash stations and safety showers must be inspected regularly to ensure that they are still operational. When chemicals are decanted into smaller containers, the smaller containers must be marked and stored in the same manner as the original container. All necessary PPE must be worn when working with chemicals. Should an incident occur where a chemical is spilt onto an employee, the employee should see the sister immediately to ensure that there is no chemical damage and a Incident form to be completed. It is important that all the relevant information of the chemical is given to the sister to ensure the correct treatment of the incident. This information must also be added to the incident form to ensure that the same incident is not repeated in future. Should a chemical spill occur, this must be reported to the Manager in your area as well as the SHE and Security Manager to ensure that the clean-up operation is effective and carried out in the correct manner. This will also assist with the disposal method of the chemicals. If a chemical ignites, it is very important to know what correct fire extinguisher to use, therefore a trained Fire Fighter should be called if possible to put the fire out. If the fire gets out of control, follow the Emergency Procedure which all employees should be familiar with. This procedure should be posted in the Notice boards in or around your area. Make sure you familliarise yourself with it.
