Job Classification: Vocational Literacy Instructor - Teacher IV Summary: This position provides instruction within the guidelines established by the Organization and specific departments within this group. Instruction may take place in a classroom or simulated workplace setting and may be provided to a class, a small group, or an individual. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Training/Facilitation: Ensures curricula is designed to effectively address various participant learning styles. Utilizes various modes of instruction to maintain active participation by program participants. Establishes and maintains a learning environment conducive to adult learning, creatively working within site limitations. Distributes and clearly communicates training schedules to relevant parties. Assists in recruiting participants with program staff and other collaborators. Actively maintains knowledge of trends, developments and strategies in adult education. Provides instruction, assesses curriculum and develops new curriculum, incorporating EFF standards into all curricula, to meet participant needs and program objectives. Develops assessment and intake procedures, and provides assessment and intake services to program participants; maintains relationships with other service providers. Assists in the recruitment of volunteer tutors for individualized education literacy enhancement. Assesses participant needs for referral to additional service providers and makes appropriate referrals. Records individual and group progress as dictated by contract compliance and professional standards and reports, as necessary, to funding entities. Compiles and analyzes statistics and prepares drafts for statistical/programmatic reports for supervisor as requested. May order and maintain inventory of instructional materials; develops resources to support program objectives. Provides supportive service assistance such as transportation, to program participants under program guidelines. Participates extensively in staff meetings, in-service trainings, and organization activities as well as additional trainings as assigned. May lead staff meetings as requested in absence of supervisor. Completes the volume of work required by department standards and those of the individual program and of the organization. Reacts positively to change Analyzes participant needs and provides effective solutions. Other duties may be assigned. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Bachelors degree in education or related field and four years experience in service provision, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Experience teaching adults with low literacy levels is preferred. Previous experience administering TABE test preferred Other: A valid drivers license is required. Language Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Internet search engines, Outlook/Exchange, and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using while numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk. The employee is regularly required to use hands to key, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, climb and/or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work sites may be scattered throughout the Chicago-land area and would require personal transportation between sites in addition to the transportation of participants. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be required to visit participants in their homes and/or institutional settings. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
