Figure ES-5 shows all o the possible LRT routes and stations identifed orstudy in the Drat EIS/EIR. The eatures and impacts o each o the buildalternatives are described in the ollowing section.
 At-Grade Emphasis LRT Alternative
The At-Grade Emphasis LRT Alternative would provide a direct connectionrom the existing underground 7
th
Street/Metro Center Station to the MetroGold Line at Temple and Alameda Streets with three new station locations. This alignment includes a combination o underground and at-gradesegments, with 46 percent o the route underground. New stations wouldserve the Civic Center, Grand Avenue, and the Financial District. 2
nd
Streetwould be converted to a pedestrian-riendly transit mall between Hill and LosAngeles Streets. To implement this alternative, the number o trafc lanes andon-street parking spaces would be reduced on 2
nd
Street. As a result, trafcis likely to divert to adjacent parallel streets such as 1
st
and 3
rd
Streets, butthe roadway capacity along these streets would remain unchanged. Roadwaycongestion would likely increase along these streets. Figure ES-6 provides anillustration o a typical at-grade alignment.

Underground Emphasis LRT Alternative
The Underground Emphasis LRT Alternative would provide a direct connectionrom 7
th
Street/Metro Center Station to the Metro Gold Line tracks at the LittleTokyo/Arts District Station with three new station locations. The alignmentwould extend underground rom the 7
th
Street/Metro Center Station underFlower Street to 2
nd
Street. The tracks would then proceed east underneaththe 2
nd
Street Tunnel and 2
nd
Street to a new portal on the parcel bounded by1
st
Street, Alameda Street, 2
nd
Street, and Central Avenue. It is anticipated thatsome o this parcel would need to be acquired to construct the portal andstage construction o the tunnels beneath 2
nd
Street. The new tracks wouldthen connect to the tracks o the Metro Gold Line at-grade. The UndergroundEmphasis LRT Alternative would be located entirely underground except or asingle at-grade crossing at the intersection o 1
st
and Alameda Streets. FigureES-7 is an illustration o a typical underground alignment.
Fully Underground LRT Alternative
As a result o a unique and intense community engagement process thatevolved rom the scoping process, the Fully Underground LRT Alternativewas developed to best address community concerns simultaneous withcost, operational, and design considerations. Based on this extensive publicoutreach eort, Metro sta recommended that the Fully Underground LRTAlternative be designated the sta-recommended LPA in the Drat EIS/EIR.This recommendation was made by Metro sta because this alternativeuniquely addresses community concerns, and the Regional Connector’stransportation purpose and need. The Fully Underground LRT Alternative in the Drat EIS/EIR is essentially thesame confguration as the Underground Emphasis LRT Alternative, except thatit provides or our new underground stations instead o three, and it traversesunder the intersection o 1
st
and Alameda Streets connecting to the MetroGold Line within 1
st
Street and north o Temple Street. The alignment would extend underground rom the 7
th
Street/Metro CenterStation under Flower Street and 2
nd
Street to Central Avenue in the samemanner as the Underground Emphasis LRT Alternative. At 2
nd
Street andCentral Avenue, the tracks would continue underground heading northeastunder 1
st
and Alameda Streets. An underground junction would be constructed beneath the intersection o 1
st
Street and Alameda Street. To the north and east o the junction, trains wouldrise to the surace through two new portals to connect to the Metro Gold Lineheading north to Montclair and east towards I-605.
