Some fundraisers are being held for7-year old Luke, who has just been diag-nosed with cancer.There will be a steak dinner fundrais-er on Jan. 21, at the Grand Pub and Grill,5pm & 7:15pm. Provincial anthem
Anew contest — to compose ananthem for BC — is meant to broadenthe interest of young people in theprovince, as well as be a chance to win a bit of cash and some fame.Organizers are hoping to have a citi-zen of BC, and preferably a student orgroup of students, compose a provincialanthem. Once a panel of judges hasselected a winner, they’ll petition theprov’l gov’t to accept it as our officialanthem. Nicola Nordic Ski Club
Kane Valley trails
The Nicola Nordic Ski Club is thenon-profit society that cares for the KaneValley ski trails, located 20 minutes southof Merritt, off Hwy 97C, on Iron Mtn.For more than 40 years people havecross country skied in Kane Valley. Itstarted with local ski enthusiasts in the70s on some of the old logging skidtrails in the area. Since then, hundreds of volunteer hours, community involve-ment, Rotary sponsorship, support fromTolko & Min. of Forests has led to thisunique ski area. Over the years, it hasdeveloped into 50+ kms of well-mappedand well-marked wilderness trails.During the annual Chili Sundayevent, Jan. 29, 11am-2pm, NNSC mem- bers will dedicate the main shelter to thefounding members at 12noon. Everyoneis welcome, even if you don't ski. It is afree day for all, the perfect opportunityto celebrate this Nicola Valley jewel, andhonour the people who created it! And,if you're interested in learning how toski, group lessons will begin at 1pm.Round up some skis and give it a try!Bring enough chili for your groupand add it to the communal pot over thefire pit at Parking Lot 3 (approx. 4 km upthe Kane Valley Rd on the right), bringyour own dishes, and the club will sup-ply the buns, cookies and hot drinks.FMI, including updates on trail con-ditions, check www.nicolanordic.ca
